Bill Maher

Bill Maher, in the monologue from the most recent episode of his HBO show "Real Time with Bill Maher," took on Bernie Madoff, calling him "the most reviled person in America except for perhaps that eTrade talking baby," and revealing what the police found in the cavity search as they took him to prison.

Maher also discussed the latest Michael Steele controversy, in which the RNC Chair called abortion an "individual choice and said that homosexuality was something one was born with. Maher says Limbaugh attacked Steele for being "dangerously sane."

I watched Real Time Overtime at HBO.com. Michael Eric Dyson,Andrew Breitbart, Sarah Silverman plus Steven Pearlstein were all on the panel and it was a six minutes like the full hour should have been.
Watch it at http://www.hbo.com/billmaher/

Actions have consequences. And maybe marijuana should be legal. But Bill Maher was very quick to write a book linking our driving big cars to the war on terror. A rightful link it was. But when it comes to drugs...Bill acts as if it's linked to nothing. How about the Taliban in Afghanistan using poppy sales to support killing our troops. And what about the blood baths so close to our border in Mexico. Terrible violence going on there. He should take a stand on drug use instead of encouraging it on his show. Even if the drug laws are outdated. That's no excuse to fund those who use this money to kill -- and very cruelly indeed.

How would legalizing pot "fund those who use this money to kill"?
The terrible violence you're talking about would be greatly reduced if it were legal.
Didn't we learn that from prohibition?

Legalizing it would pretty much put an end to the drug cartels in Mexico, and the criminal element behind it here in the US, so how does that help fund those who kill? Legalization would actually do the opposite.

Bill supports Marijuana...which has nothing to do with Mexican cartels or Taliban poppies.

He says that's not true.
But, I'm sure you'd know better than him. After all you read it somewhere, so it's probably a fact.

I love Bill. Too bad I can't afford HBO right now. I used to watch him a lot when he was on ABC. Please Bill, give up the bunnies. There is a lot more out there, ya know? Call me...

YEah, I just can't get that interested in Bill Maher. Everytime I have watched his show, I feel like I am watching a 14 year old boy. He tends to have the same obsessions with T&A that 14 year old boys have. And, he has about the same depth. Mostly, he's just not funny.

And it is time to stop talking about gays and just come out of the closet himself.

Just because rational people advocate giving homosexuals the right to marry does not make them gay, sorry to burst your bubble there.

Bill who?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:27 AM on 03/16/2009

Bill where have you gone? I used to love Bill Maher's show but lately it seems Bill has lost his way. Now his show is about attacking anyone who has believes in religion or doesnt believe in the mantra that everything PETA does is right. Hey Bill give it a rest. We get it. You dont like anyone who believes in a higher power. Thats their right to believe in whatever they choose but, quit being so sanctimonious about being an atheist. You are starting to come off petty.

I don't agree with his stance one PETA like most organizations they are on the mark about some things and way way off base on others.

With religion I think he is angry more about the stupid that goes with some religious beliefs, like creationism. They have went from having faith as something that compliments their lives to it being something that subverts their reason. Faith is one thing, but letting your religion dumb you down is something else completely, and it a HUGE problem.

I hear ya. I'm not religious but most atheists more and more sound just like fundamentalist christians. Its the whole arrogance thing of I'm right and have it all figured out.

Silverman is funny, but she was self restrained. Silverman realized that it is Maher's show. I commend her for putting herself in check. In the past, Silverman has overtaken other shows as a guest. At least she was not asked about the Kimmel fiasco. Also, with two panelists, the audience can hear/understand comments since there is less over-talking one another.

I don't think we tune in for restrained. We can get that without turning on the TV. And again, I'll put on Charlie Rose if I want to hear a serious discussion with no over-talking (mostly done by Bill really). The last two weeks have been neither funny nor insightful. I agree with the post below that calls the panelists blowhards. A comedic offset in a 3-person panel is needed. Maher commented ruefully the first week that the panel has shrunk due to budget constraints. I too miss the video interview and agree that abandoning the guest for the incoming panel is awkward. The How F$#@'d are we segment is uninspired, just dull. And he keeps repeating the unfunny and obvious picks from the previous week increasing the tedium. Gonna watch one more show and then its off my rotation.

The show's been very flat since coming back from its winter hiatus. The two-person panel doesn't work. If you have three and one panelist is "off" that night or has no chemistry, there is a still a chance for a lively dialogue with the other two. The last two pairs have been tedious and heavy. Who is booking the panelists? They aren't even paired well. The writing seems off for the monologue and other set pieces, just misses on all counts. ZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz.

I am guessing new writers or writers who maybe need replaced.

Bill should've had Sarah Silverman on the panel instead of letting the right wing and the left wing blowhards duke it out. Bringing her on by herself only made for ocasional entertaining moments. I don't think Bill needs W, he just needs to keep mixing the panel up with at least one person that's funny and/or does not have that much of an extreme viewpoint. That was the worst episode of Real Time ever. It can only get better from here. Or can it?

I agree completely ... the two of them ruined the show. I think she would be a great addition, humor first !

right wing blowhard?

Andrew Breitbart couldn't get a word in edgewise, after calling Bill out on his racist remark.

Professor Michael Eric Dyson made a fool of himself spouting angry gibberish, while the fawning audience applauded as if they understood the nonsense he was yelling in Breibart's face.

My point was about Sarah Silverman and humor, not right or left blowhards. Sorry if you didn't understand that.

This show has gotten lazy. It is hit or miss funny, and when its a miss he cops an attitude with the audience. He can't get enough of making fun of "fat" people and now he's telling senior's on social security that they must make sacrifices. Really? AIG, Citi, BoA, etc. have taken all the money and it's pensioners who have lost it who have to make sacrifices? He has no idea what it is like to live on social secuity and has forgotten that we all pay into social securiy all our working lives so we can have some security when we lose our jobs and no one will hire us because of our age. It's time for congress and social security to make some sacrifices for us. Also, his rant about the teacher's union was simply ignorant, self rightous rabblerousing. His new "How F*$&ed Are We" segment is awful and he tries, unsucessfully, to save it by pretending to stiffel his own laughter.
Seriously, Bill has made some wierd turn toward meanness and it is not funny. I'm not fat, I'm not a teacher, I'm not on social securiy and, most of all, I'm not watching him any more. He's become a waste of time.

Sadly agree on all counts. The mean spiritedness has gone beyond mere middle-age curmudgeonliness. (testosterone and zoloft cocktails, anyone?) Maher's almost a negative role model or walking argument for the religious right about bitter unhappiness being the inevitable result of a self-indulgent "Hollywood" lifestyle that dismisses anyone who can't service him (teachers, seniors, children, ordinary folk, the overweight, et al). It's embarrassing. Positive, funny, caring and contributing atheists do exist.
