BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The actor best known as "Borat" tricked the Alabama National Guard into allowing him onto a post, giving him a military uniform and briefly letting him train _ all, supposedly, for a German TV documentary.

The ruse, which included comedian Sacha Baron Cohen exposing his thong underwear while changing clothes, was going well until a young cadet recognized Cohen and notified older officers who weren't familiar with the actor.

"It's an embarrassment to the Alabama National Guard," Staff Sgt. Katrina Timmons said Monday. "Since then we have put in protocols to make sure this doesn't happen again."

A film crew pulled the stunt Feb. 13 at the Alabama Military Academy, which trains officer candidates from across the nation. The school is located at the Army's old Fort McClellan in Anniston, about 65 miles east of Birmingham.

Footage from the visit could be included in Cohen's upcoming movie featuring his character Bruno, a gay Austrian fashion writer. The reported title is "Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America For The Purpose Of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable In The Presence Of A Gay Foreigner In A Mesh T-Shirt."

Cohen's spokesman, Matthew Labov, declined comment.

Guard officials who let Cohen and his crew into the Alabama base initially believed they were helping foreign journalists.

"They called and said they were a German affiliate of a TV station doing a documentary on what it was like to be in officer candidate school," said Timmons. "They wanted to know if they could come here and embed one person for a few hours up to a day."

Military officials met Cohen and his crew at the gate.

"He was treated like a member of the media and escorted around. He was put in a uniform like he requested to allow him to get a taste of what it was like to be an officer candidate," she said.

The actor's schtick should sound familiar. Cohen portrayed uncouth journalist Borat Sagdiyev in the 2006 hit "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," in which he traveled the United States fooling people with gags.

The film included a scene shot at a dinner party in suburban Birmingham.

This guy is just not funny. The gay themes have gotten really old too. He is stale repetition constantly using the same joke. Hard to believe not many can see that.

He's a genius.....he is the funniest comedian performing these days. At the heart of his comedy is a really serious message, however -- about the biases, gullibility and ignorance to be found in America today.

Cohen is an intelligent man who zeros in on the small, shadowy places in the cultural psyche in a way that shows the absurdity -- usually in a good natured way, but he does cut to the quick, too.

This evokes anger from a relatively few people, but most of us can appreciate the wicked glint of hilarity he brings to the fore (may have to have an IQ over 70 to get it, though).

Ah, remember, not all that long ago, only the joker (court jester) could lampoon the king and live. This is a long tradition. And he's good at it...

I'm surprised nobody realized who he was from beginning. When I was stationed in Germany, The Ali G Show was quite popular in our barracks.

I've boycotted Cohen ever since I found out how he exploited the impoverished village in eastern Europe for Borat. Comedy should never be directed at those who are less powerful but rather at the powerful. When you make fun of the less fortunate and powerless you're engaging in simple cruelty.

re."Comedy should never be directed at those who are less powerful"
Yes, Comedy MUST be politically correct!
And pre-approved by a group multi-racial, multi-social multi-economic status, SGLBQT committees
We, middle class womynn, will make sure of that.

To quote Borat---sorry to interrupt politic, may take a sh#t in your house?

The man is loathesome. Playing tricks on a military unit who could well end up in Iraq or Afghanistan, risking their lives in a real war, while he, what has HE ever done except flaunt his own ego at others' expense? "I'm too cool for words and everyone else is a shmuck" is hardly talent.

Are you kidding? Americans have an international reputation for being gullible, I mean it appears that many will believe anything, ( Bush was elected TWICE, US is the home of Mormons AND scientology, what could be better?) It can be the most fertile ground for this sort of comedy. Canadian comedian Rick Mercer had a series called "Talking to Americans", which was hysterical. Thanks guys! : )

Mercer's programme, 'Talking To Americans was hilarious.. The level of ignorance was disturbing, but hey; they're our neighbours, and they do have Obama now, which mitigates the situation somewhat. Obama is fantastic.

Cohen has a graduate degree from I believe Cambridge, where his thesis was on the American Civil Rights movement. I think that he is well qualified to offer commentary on his observations....even if the truth hurts sometimes.

Mercer stopped doing it and I'm glad. It is just too easy to ridicule people who you think are dumb and/or uninformed. And I think it is a cruel, cheap shot. SBC does this all the time. He should expand his repertoire.

You bring up a good point. Cohen's next character should be a Mormon or a Scientologist and bring us into the vasty stupid worlds they inhabit. Personally, I'd vote for a Mormon character, with a film released just in time for Mitt Romney's 2012 run at the White House.

As a woman I found some of Cohen's characters' behavior toward women infuriating. I still think he is a comedic genius. A brilliant, original and often hysterical experience. I think I have seen all of his work, some more than once. I am dying to see the new Bruno movie, he was my favorite character to begin with.

What impresses me is his ability to fully be and live his characters, he is utterly convincing. I can enjoy his interviews as Ali G. with the pompous officials and other self-important people over and over again. He comes from a long line of exceptionally talented people- doctors, scientists, and artists.

Is what he does fair or ethical to the interviewees? Would I like to be one? If the interviewees knew he was a brilliant well-born instead of a minority or ethnic group, how differently would they have responded?

Makes ya think.

Thank god for the hip "young Cadet" or Cohen would be leading an Infantry platoon in Iraq right about now.

You mean to tell me there could be a problem with the military reconstructing an Arab country of 26 million?

Oh, liberators, I forgot, thanks again Dick, Wolfy, Dusty, Fatso, and George.
