BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The actor best known as "Borat" tricked the Alabama National Guard into allowing him onto a post, giving him a military uniform and briefly letting him train _ all, supposedly, for a German TV documentary.

The ruse, which included comedian Sacha Baron Cohen exposing his thong underwear while changing clothes, was going well until a young cadet recognized Cohen and notified older officers who weren't familiar with the actor.

"It's an embarrassment to the Alabama National Guard," Staff Sgt. Katrina Timmons said Monday. "Since then we have put in protocols to make sure this doesn't happen again."

A film crew pulled the stunt Feb. 13 at the Alabama Military Academy, which trains officer candidates from across the nation. The school is located at the Army's old Fort McClellan in Anniston, about 65 miles east of Birmingham.

Footage from the visit could be included in Cohen's upcoming movie featuring his character Bruno, a gay Austrian fashion writer. The reported title is "Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America For The Purpose Of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable In The Presence Of A Gay Foreigner In A Mesh T-Shirt."

Cohen's spokesman, Matthew Labov, declined comment.

Guard officials who let Cohen and his crew into the Alabama base initially believed they were helping foreign journalists.

"They called and said they were a German affiliate of a TV station doing a documentary on what it was like to be in officer candidate school," said Timmons. "They wanted to know if they could come here and embed one person for a few hours up to a day."

Military officials met Cohen and his crew at the gate.

"He was treated like a member of the media and escorted around. He was put in a uniform like he requested to allow him to get a taste of what it was like to be an officer candidate," she said.

The actor's schtick should sound familiar. Cohen portrayed uncouth journalist Borat Sagdiyev in the 2006 hit "Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan," in which he traveled the United States fooling people with gags.

The film included a scene shot at a dinner party in suburban Birmingham.

I love all the indignation! "He's not a real journalist!"

Wake up, people. In 2009, the Comedians ARE the Journalist.

But I do somewhat sympathize. If a camera hog came to my place of work with a hidden agenda, no interest in the truth and just wanted to make the people they don't like look like fools. . . wait a minute, that sounds like 21st century journalism.

I'm so confused.

Ill start this post by 'outing' myself as a gay man who happens to live in the not so great state of Alabama. Its getting better, but we still have a LONNNNNNG way to go in getting past our infamous history.

In 'Borat', Cohen gently convinced 'patriotic' bigots (mostly republicans I would say) to expose themselves to the camera. He showed the world what they really think, and who they really are. It made some of them angry, and there were several lawsuits after the film was released. One of the most memorable scenes in Borat was at the dinner party in Alabama. HILARIOUS.

If you ever saw 'The Ali G Show' on HBO, both Borat and Bruno were characters on that program. Bruno does the same thing as Borat - with a gay twist. He rips the cover off of homophobia. He makes his 'victims' say it out loud in broad daylight, to the world. He uses humor to show the masses what hatred looks like.

Im not sure about the National Guard stuff, and whether that was appropriate or not BUT I do hope that 'Bruno' exposes as many homophobes as possible, wherever they are.

From someone who has felt the sting of that prejudice, BLESS HIS HEART for doing it!!

Did nobody watch Da Ali G Show?

Sacha Baron Cohen is as much a journalist as any other. He is like Charlie Rose for young people who like to laugh and smoke weed. By that same logic John Stewart is Walter Cronkite.

It bothers me that the Commander, or Staff, did not check this guy out and verify who he was. What if it had been terrorists? Can't believe I said that.

You would think that there would already be protocols in place to avoid just this sort of thing.

Seems cameras make people stupid.

I don't appreciate making fun of our National Guard, nor of calling them "red state rednecks". They treated him like any other member of the media. Nothing in the story suggested they treated him poorly, and I'm sure they weren't rude to him.
I saw Borat, it was pretty funny, but he definitely went over the line. He did some pretty rude things, and some things weren't that funny either. He's following in the footsteps of Andy Kaufman, but I don't think Andy would have tried to kidnap anyone.

I do appreciate making fun of our National Guard and calling them red state rednecks.

And Andy Kaufman may have blazed the trail, but Sacha is taking it in a new direction. Keep going Sacha, there are still pleanty of people who don't realize how batsh!t crazy they are.

OH, please, I'm sure there are graduates of this OCS that can tell some of the funniest stories you've ever heard about all kinds of SNAFU's. This is in the same league as Sarah's phone call from Sarkozy.

If our military and it's leaders are so great, then they wouldn't have allowed this to happen.
They only look as stupid as they are.

If they are doing Damage Control now, then wait until the movie comes out, they will need a PR firm to get them out this one.

Way to go Sasha, you are one of the greatest comedians alive.
