'Witch Mountain' Cooks 'Watchmen' At The Box Office

LOS ANGELES — Disney's "Race to Witch Mountain" raced to No. 1 at the weekend box office, bypassing expectations with $25 million in ticket sales.

The PG-rated sci-fi flick starring Dwayne Johnson as a cab driver with a pair of alien teenagers along for the ride topped the R-rated superhero epic "Watchmen," which earned $18.1 million in its second week.

Mark Zoradi, president of Disney's motion-picture group, said analysts had predicted that "Race to Witch Mountain," director Andy Fickman's re-imagination of the 1975 live-action film "Escape to Witch Mountain," would fly away with $20 million or less. Now he expects this "Witch Mountain" to maintain a high orbit in theaters with kids on spring break.

"I think audiences this weekend were really drawn to the action adventure of 'Race to Witch Mountain,'" said Zoradi. "There was also this element of parents over 30 who remembered the original and were drawn to this one, so I think that combination is what helped us exceed what folks in the industry thought this movie was going to do."

Ticket sales for "Watchmen" plummeted 67 percent from last weekend's $55.2 million debut, according to studio estimates Sunday. Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros. executive vice president of distribution, said the studio anticipated the big dip for director Zack Snyder's comic book adaptation about a team of subversive superheros.

"It's very common with higher profile, highly anticipated movies," said Goldstein.

Also opening this weekend in wide release was "The Last House on the Left," the Universal horror remake, which turned up at No. 3 with $14.7 million in ticket sales, and "Miss March," the Fox Atomic comedy in the No. 10 spot with $2.4 million. 20th Century Fox's thriller "Taken" remained at No. 4 with $6.7 million in its seventh weekend in theaters.

Factoring in 2009's higher admission prices, the weekend box office total was down 16 percent compared with last year, making it the first down weekend in six weeks. Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Media By Numbers, does not believe the shift signals the end of 2009's otherwise stellar year at the box office.

"I don't think this down weekend reflects any kind of lack of interest by the audience," Dergarabedian said. "I think it has to do with 'Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who' opening a year ago with $45 million. That's really a tough comparison. Not every weekend this year is going to be up when you have some strong openings like that from last year."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "Race to Witch Mountain," $25 million.

2. "Watchmen," $18.1 million.

3. "The Last House on the Left," $14.7 million.

4. "Taken," $6.7 million.

5. "Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail," $5.1 million.

6. "Slumdog Millionaire," $5 million.

7. "Paul Blart: Mall Cop," $3.1 million.

8. "He's Just Not That Into You," $2.9 million.

9. "Coraline," $3.3 million.

10. "Miss March," $2.4 million.

A remake of a kid flick and a comic book adaptation with lots of cool graphics, wow, I can feel the raw creative power of the 3 seconds those ideas took to form a decade and a dozen movies ago. At least the commercials aren't every five seconds and absolutely disgusting like latest "how much depravity can we make people feel is normal?" movie I keep currently having to change the channel on.

How could people watch this garbage enough to make it number one, wow. Nobody has any taste anymore...

Before The Rock became so ordinary and mainstream, I was hoping he'd make a couple of "Conan" movies. He would have been a million times better than Schwartzenegger...guess it won't happen now.

The fact that Witch Mountain did slightly better at the box office than Watchmen has nothing to do with the quality of either movie and more to with the fact that Witch Mountain was the first big budget family movie released this year. Witch Mountain hasn't been getting very good reviews but families need something to take their kids to. Which is good, Watchmen is rated R and it needs to be left to the thinking adults it was intended for.

Good. "Watchmen" was a sloppy, overrated, Frankenstein of a movie.

At least "Race to Witch Mountain" didn't pretend to be fluff.

Seriously, Watchmen was a little too overhyped.

But it was so weird because I only knew about the hype from people telling me it was hyped. I never really felt the hype, and I never felt the excitement over the movie. It was just a bunch of people thinking that there was a lot of hype.

And those trailers were certified failures. I watched every single trailer LOOKING for something to get excited about. I wanted to want to see the movie just because I HEARD about the hype. It was the weirdest marketing experience. But anyway, those trailers really did nothing for me, other than confuse me more about the plot and the point.

I also read a buncha reviews for the movie, and I feel like this one was the most honest and relatable about their experience. They too are in this weird middle ground. http://cinemaverytasty.com/2009/03/06/review-watchmen/

Good. Wathcman has to be the most overrated film of the year, like 300 was the year before.
01:55 PM on 03/16/2009
Wow. When does Wathcman come out?

I saw Watchmen, though, and it was pretty damn good.

I saw a televised bit about Wayne last night on REEL. He seems very nice, down to earth and funny. Liked him a lot.

I also saw Race To WItch Mountain with my daughter (9 years old) and I was surprised I enjoyed it so much. I was expecting a crappy movie from some of the reviews I read. My daughter LOVED it and wants to see it again. It was good family entertainment that wasn't too goody goody. IMO it was light years ahead of "family fare" like Pink Panther 2.

well, from what I've heard from the crowds, Watchmen may be over way too many peoples heads. If your familiar with comic books, and not Saturday morning cartoon superheroes, than Watchmen is a bit suited for you. But hey, their loss.

Witch Mountain is just another lame remake, I like the Rock, but not in Disney Movies. But maybe people cxan bring their nagging rugrats to see.
12:51 PM on 03/16/2009
well, that wasn't pompous at all... and perhaps you should see Witch Mountain before calling it lame. Jesus, seriously, Niv - "I liked it, but it was over your head...". You must be a big hit at a dinner party.

There are Black Characters in it, just not SH. Go watch Meteor Man, Steel, or Spawn yo...

I plan on going to see Race to witch mountain.....I really enjoyed the first movie back in the 70's.
11:08 AM on 03/16/2009
And "Ants in the Pants" undoubtedly heavily outsold "Citizen Kane" back in the day. Whatever it makes at the box office, because of how close it came to successfully adapting a very difficult and long story, The Watchmen is going to be a classic for years to come for breaking the superhero mold open, the same way the original Watchmen books did. Who will even remember Witch Mountain 3 months from now besides Dwayne's accountant?

yeah, Disney's movies never hold up well, right? Let's see, when was Bambi made? Have your kids seen it? yes. Loved it? yes. Lady and the Tramp? Cinderella? Bedknobs and Broomsticks? Beauty and the Beast? Right... no one's gonna remember any of those.
01:49 PM on 03/16/2009
Readreza, if you think Witch Mountain is in league with those Disney films, you're delusional. I didn't say that aren't ANY Disney films that are classics.
