IOWA CITY, Iowa — Sen. Charles Grassley wants AIG executives to apologize for the collapse of the insurance giant _ but said Tuesday that "obviously" he didn't really mean that they should kill themselves.

The Iowa Republican raised eyebrows with his comments Monday that the executives _ under fire for passing out big bonuses even as they were taking a taxpayer bailout _ perhaps should "resign or go commit suicide."

But he backtracked Tuesday morning in a conference call with reporters. He said he would like executives of failed businesses to make a more formal public apology, as business leaders have done in Japan.

"What I'm expressing here obviously is not that I want people to commit suicide. That's not my notion," Grassley said Tuesday. "But I do feel very strongly that we have not had statements of apology, statements of remorse, statements of contrition on the part of CEOs of manufacturing companies or banks or financial services or insurance companies that are asking for bailouts."

Grassley's initial comments came during an interview Monday with Cedar Rapids radio station WMT. They went further than remarks he has made in the past about corporate executives and public apologies.

"I suggest, you know, obviously, maybe they ought to be removed," Grassley said Monday. "But I would suggest the first thing that would make me feel a little bit better toward them if they'd follow the Japanese example and come before the American people and take that deep bow and say 'I'm sorry,' and then either do one of two things: resign or go commit suicide.

"And in the case of the Japanese, they usually commit suicide before they make any apology."

Japanese executives often take responsibility for scandals within their companies by issuing public apologies on camera and stepping down. It is rare, however, that business executives have gone so far as to take their lives, though in feudal Japan, ritual suicide was considered an honorable death under the samurai warrior ethic.

Grassley spokesman Casey Mills noted that Grassley had in the past criticized executives who accepted tax money and then spent it on travel and bonuses.

"Senator Grassley has said for some time now that generally speaking, executives who make a mess of their companies should apologize, as Japanese executives do," Mills said Monday. "He says the Japanese might even go so far as to commit suicide but he doesn't want U.S. executives to do that."

The senator's remarks added to a chorus of public outrage over the disclosure that AIG was paying its executives $165 million in bonuses after taking billions in federal bailout money. President Barack Obama on Monday lambasted the insurance giant for "recklessness and greed" and pledged to try to block payment of the bonuses.

Hmmm, a Republican says something intelligent and correct. Of course, he then retracts it the next day, after adding obligatory religious overtones.

Don't care if they repent or not, just refund the hundreds of millions of dollars in pay that they bleeded the company for while they were putting nails in it's coffin

It's too bad those words came out of his mouth, and I think we know they weren't meant literally, but I think we also all understand the sentiment.

Compare these two HP headlines:

Grassley Clarifies: AIG Execs Should Repent, Not Commit Suicide

earlier headline about Obama and AIG

Obama does an about face on AIG after public outcry (they have since changed the headline but it originally was something close to this.

So Grassley "clarifies" what he said when in fact he completely back-tracked and did an about face whereas with Obama, he never approved of the bonuses given by AIG so he couldn't have "backtracked".

This is just another example of how HP is slanting their news coverage these days. I'm wondering if A r i a n n a isn't returning to her conservative roots.

Current MBA students may want to change majors. Looks like there is going to be a surplus of unemployed MBA's.

May I suggest Nursing. Try serving the people instead of yourselves. 3 twelve hour days is considered full time. You get 4 days a week off, paid vacation, sick time, medical, dental, and vision coverage. The down side is there is no seven figure salary and you have to deal with body fluids. But you get to save a lot on your wardrobe since scrubs are not that expensive. Also instead of long hours sitting on your a** you get to spend long hours on your feet. And look at the bright side, you get to save lives instead of ruining lives.

I like your idea and there is a critical shortage of qualified nurses in the country.

The problem is MBA's would never consider a profession that involves helping OTHERS rather than helping THEMSELVES. The M in MBA stands for "MY"--as in My Business Affairs.

Grassley, this is the breadth of his wisdom? Narrow mindedness seems to run with this party. continuing education is not on their career agendas, just the same old backwoods concepts that in their feebleness cure every ill. Commit Suicide or Quit, or do penance???

Oh for crying out a loud, he was just using that to make the point that AIG executives need to show some responsibility.

Must everything devolve into partisan sniping?

Agreed. It's obvious that he was just using extremism in his words, but clearly wasn't advocating the taking of life. He just happened to say something, even if it happened to be somewhat inarticulately stated, that so many in the country are thinking ... perhaps equally inarticulately.

Here is an idea for an AIG bailout. Why not set up an AIG amusement park which will include:

1. House of Horror. Why resort to fake vampires and dumb monsters when you have the real thing?

2. Hall of smoke and mirrors.

3. Flying DUMBO rides.

4. Dow Roller-coaster ride. Go up, down, and upside down!

5. Send in the clowns, er Congress.

6. Throw a pie at AIG exec. I anticipate that this will be the most popular.

Before you know it, they will have recovered their bonuses!

Watch yourself Chuck. Iowa went for Obama in 08...when are you up for reelection again? Oh yeah, that's right, 2010. Good luck with that.

He will be reelected, just like Harkin will. People here vote for both of them out of habit rather than conviction, and they both deliver good amounts of pork.

In the 70's Life or Look Magazine had photos of a Japanese publically commiting Sepuku. I think he was in the military and somehow failed, but they showed photos of him before and after he killed himself.
I think Grassley might have realized the fallout had some one actually did kill themselves.
Of course we wont mention the real people that have taken their lives from losing all their money from the actions of these bozos at AIG.

$170bn of liabilities. No risk management.

Repentance? Suicide? Whatever you like. Play it your way.

Bonuses? Not so much.

Re the subject of vampirism:

The full Marx quotation is: "Capital is dead labor, which, vampire-like, lives only by sucking living labor, and lives the more, the more labor it sucks." Ain't it true!

It helps explain why the first vampire novel, Varney the Vampire, appeared around the same time in 1847: and why vampires in fiction (i.e., Carmilla and Dracula) were almost always aristocrats. (Btw, it's not coincidental that Dracula is an imperialist either.)

So there is only one thing left to do if AIG doesn't desire to do the honorable thing and off themselves. Cut the heads off these modern-day vampires and plunge a stake through their hearts.

I don't like the way the article refers to nameless people just to stir the pot, a la "Eyebrows were raised" etc. And not a single quote.

This is a non-story, of course, pushed by AP just for sensationalism and to stir the pot of public opinion.

To repeat an earlier post:

'Everyone goes to jail for fraud.

That will do nicely, thank you.'

And read this blog about MBA theft and vampirism.
Get out the stakes.
