Joe Jonas

Weeks after Miley Cyrus apologized for posing in a similar manner and denied that she is a racist, middle Jonas Brother Joe Jonas appears to be the gentleman in a photo pulling down his eyelids with his pinky fingers.

Jonas, who like the guy in the photo wears a purity ring, is an older brother of Miley's ex boyfriend Nick Jonas.

Joe is 19.

No word when the photo was taken or where it came from before surfacing on Gossip Teen.

Why should asians care what other races think about us? We so insecure that we have to seek acceptance from these people?

I have Asian friends that do care. I am white and I care that they care too. Caring is good.

If Joe Jonas is making fun of Asians, then it is offensive and he should be called out on it. If he is just rubbing his eyes, then the photographer and many people on this thread are guilty of spreading rumors about an innocent kid.

I find it ironic that this appears the week after BoA's debut album came out. BoA is a young Korean dancer/singer with the sharpest moves in the business. Anybody heard the story?

... four days later. I was afraid no one heard the story, and it shows. It is this industry barrier that prevents Americans from hearing about Asian entertainers. Please do yourself a favor and find out who BoA is.

I actually massage my eyes with all of my fingers, most frequently with my middle finger.

Mature adults would not spread rumors about this kid. They would wait until the whole story came out. Then again, maybe there are not any adults on this thread.

Why am I not surprised?

I find it a little disturbing how quickly white people leap into defense of these kind of things. It's like they take all of their frustration out on Asian people now because we're the new acceptable targets. So doing the slant-eye is all in innocent humor, and it's fine as long as an Asian person or present -- or in this case, it's fine if NO Asian person is present! Or it's fine if Asian people are members of your extended family!

Okay. Now lets see Joe Jonas and Miley Cyrus puffing out their lips and throwing up gangster signs while they munch on fried chicken. And for laughs, lets just throw in the token black guy laughing nervously when all his white "friends" around him are directly singling him out because of his race and mocking him! Oh hey, it's all in good humor right? Those silly black people! What do they have to feel bad about? If we tell them not to get offended, we shouldn't! I mean the PRESIDENT of our country is black now! What kind of excuse can they have now?

If he is truly making a racist gesture then he should not be defended, but we don't know the whole story. If he was just messaging his eyes, you are spreading rumors that are smearing an innocent kid. The point I am trying to make is that you need to reserve judgment until you know the whole story.

I don't know if anyone else already said this or not, BUT. When I was young, before I had contact lenses, I would squint like that to be able to see.

interpreting this as a racial gesture seems like a stretch.

Joe Jonas could be rubbing his eyes, or he could be making a very offensive gesture. In any case, anyone who resorts to that kind of mocking is too ignorant/immature/racist/intellectually impaired to understand why it is wrong. Sadly, it happens all the time. I would choose to let this iffy picture go, but what do you do when you see it happen in real life? Do you tell someone it is wrong? If you are Asian, do you just sit and laugh and pretend it is funny? Ignorance and enabling racism can only take you so far. Live your real lives, and don't worry so much about celebrities. If enough people stand up for what is right on the streets and in schools and at home every day, this kind of thing will eventually die its long overdue dinosaur death. Slanty eyed mocking is old news, and it's high time it expires, along with keeping women in the kitchen and slaves on their knees.

I'm a Caucasian, but I think Asians have the most beautiful eyes in the world. I can't stand this mocking gesture.

Since when did people "massage" their eyes in public with their pinkies while taking pictures of themselves? Try to come up with a better excuse.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:05 PM on 03/22/2009

this is just stupid, everybody just massages their eyes every once in awhile, like when they are stressed or tired...it wasnt posed like mileys! and besides, ppl are just trying to get dirt on the jonas brothers cuz they havent had a scandal at all, like miley has...this was about 3 years ago and its ridiculus that theyr makin it a big deal. joe didnt do anything wrong and ppl seriously need to leave him alone for this.

I'm Asian and I find this extremely offensive. I had to grow up with this gesture being shoved in my face in my all white neighborhood and it makes me sick that people think this is "just a little fun." This gesture has historically been used in a derogatory fashion. Just because you personally have not experienced this particular type of racism doesn't mean it's not racist or not offensive. Furthermore, Joe Jonas is a hugely public figure to youth in America. I dread my daughter coming home from school doing this gesture or having someone do it to her.

I had to grow up with people making fun of my large eyes. Some kids are made fun of because they are nerds, or fat, or can't play sports. Doesn't anyone get over this type of cruel childhood mocking anymore, or does everyone carry around the hurt and anger forever?

I suggest some counseling.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:48 PM on 03/22/2009

Oh, right. Of course. Because racial discrimination that carries a history of oppression and exploitation is totally the same thing as being made fun of for being the fat kid.

How silly of us poor, misguided little yellow people!

Denise --

I'm assuming you're white so you've never really experienced racism directed at you. Where you see someone massaging their eyes, many Asians see something offensive. We did not pull that thought out of thin air; that gesture has been done to many of us in a racist manner. And we're allowed to take it that way, so please stop telling us to get over it and continue to take racism up the rear quietly.

And for reasons you'll never understand, It really feels different to be mocked solely because of one's race than to be made fun of for being fat or nerdy, etc. All those things you listed transcend race. Racism mocks a lower, more basic part of a person because you're not even giving them a chance to be fat or nerdy -- racism makes the one feel less than human. I'm over the teasing I received when I was a kid. What I'm not over is the unbelievably rampant ignorance, closed-mindedness, and hush hush attitude that is still around some 20 years later.

As an American I have to apologize for the silly games, but more than that I'd like to apologize for the really bad entertainment coming out of America the past couple of years.

Oh, come on! I frequently massage my eyes like this when they are aching and tired, or when I have pressure behind them which is causing a headache. If someone took a picture of me doing it, they could smear me by calling me racist too. This is just getting ridiculous.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:39 PM on 03/21/2009

I'm sure you'd be smiling too if your eyes were aching and tired.

You need to lighten up until you know exactly what he was doing in this photo. It doesn't look like he is smiling to me at all, and even if he is, It might be because what he is doing is relieving some of the aching feeling in his eyes. I thought someone was supposed to be innocent until proven guilty. It is very immature for people to jump on this photo as being racist without having the slightest information about it.

White people murder indigenous people for land. White people are evil.
That's a stereotype. Does anyone find it offensive?
It does not matter if the stereotype SEEMS benign to you. A stereotype is a generalization that de-humanizes.

I think you missed Denise's point. While you can speculate the reason for this photograph, you really don't have a clue as to it's origin. A candid or overt frame from a video could be used to put nearly anyone in a compromising position.

To answer your question above though... While I'm sure the acts of many a white person is now and historically have been despicable, I am merely 1 individual. I can take no blame or credit in the behavior of others. If one is to honestly look at their own history, their indigenous people did a fine job of mutilating each other long before the white/black/asian/other/whatever man showed up.

Right, and Prince Harry came into a Halloween party with a button-up SS officer's shirt and a red swastika armband, he wasn't trying to be a Nazi! He was actually attempting to be a Buddhist monk!

Now wearing an SS unifrom would be offensive. If Joe Jonas is making fun of Asians, it would be offensive too. I prefer to give him the benefit of the doubt until we know the true story.

I never even had heard of the Jonas brothers until I read an article about them on HuffPo a few months ago. I do everything possible to avoid this pseudo-culture that the corporations like to force down our throats.

You know who doesn't do these sorts of things? Carroll Baker. And she actually contributed something to our cultural heritage. Is there any chance that we could hear a little more about her on HuffPo?
