LOS ANGELES — Buoyed by adoring crowds far from Washington's political wars, President Barack Obama guaranteed Americans on Thursday that the nation's economy will recover, though he asked them for patience.

Obama looked every bit the campaigner as he sometimes mocked his GOP critics, and sometimes asked people to forgive his shortcomings. In general, his demeanor and message were more upbeat than in recent days when public fury over executive bonuses dominated Congress.

"We will come out on the other side stronger and a more prosperous nation," he said, acknowledging the nation's economic crisis. "That I can guarantee you. I can't tell you how long it will take, what obstacles we'll face along the way, but I promise you this: There will be brighter days ahead."

The comments brought another roar of approval from about 1,000 people at a town hall forum in Los Angeles, where questions were more fawning than pressing. "I'm very glad and thankful that you are our president," the first questioner began. The second said, "thank God for you."

Obama capped his day by taping an appearance on comedian Jay Leno's late-night talk show. He told Leno he was "stunned" when he first was informed of the big bonuses received by some employees at the bailed-out AIG insurance company.

"We're going to do everything we can to get these bonuses back", the president said.

Earlier, in the town-hall meeting _ his second in California in as many days _ Obama asked Americans to back his plans to overhaul health care, change energy policies, and spend more on roads, education and many other areas to boost the stalled economy. The resulting large deficits will be temporary and justified, he said.

He told Americans not to expect "something for nothing" from their government. Improvements to the economy and medical care will take time, he said.

"Nothing is free," the president said. Responding to a woman's complaint about cuts in jobs and salaries for California teachers, Obama urged people not to ask the federal and state governments to cut taxes and improve services at the same time.

"At some point you've got to make some choices," he said.

"We are not always going to be right," he said. "And I don't want everybody disappointed if we make a mistake here or there."

The important questions, he said, are whether things are moving "in the right direction" and whether he is keeping his main campaign promises.

Obama mocked Republican officials who call his plans too costly even though they presided over huge deficits while they controlled Congress and the White House.

"Where have you been?" he said. "What have you been doing?"

Obama also announced fresh aid to struggling homeowners in California. He said the state would receive $145 million to help communities hardest hit by the home foreclosure crisis. He said the money would be used to buy up and rehabilitate vacant homes, and provide loans to poorer and middle-income families to help with home assistance.

He announced a new Web site to help people around the nation: . http://www.makinghomeaffordable.gov/

California's GOP governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, gave the president a far warmer greeting than Obama has received from Republicans in Congress. "It's great to have him here," Schwarzenegger said in introducing Obama to the crowd. He thanked Obama for "courageous leadership."

Obama called the governor "one of the great innovators of state government" and "an outstanding partner with our administration."

Why is the media so upset that President Obama is speaking directly to the people who elected him. they keep mocking him for it and they keep saying that he should be in Washington. They have become so accustomed to filtering what anyone says and selling it their own way that it is infuriating them that the people's President is speaking to the people!

Honest question for any who care to answer: why in God's name is Arnold a Republican?

Have I missed something or was he the guy in 2004 who was on national tv during the GOP convention yelling at democrats about being "economic girly-men"?

And now he's in love with President Obama? He's looking to me like the GOP version of Joe Lieberman.

Rethugs are in D.C holding media events complaining about Pres Obama going on Leno, trying to take the attention away from the fact that Obama is in Cali hanging out with one of their own, & getting a presidential welcome from all. Rethugs are so-o-o pathetic!!

If you must see Ah-nold at his best, pick up a copy of "Hercules in New York". He's billed as Arnold Strong, and has second billing to Arnold Stang--the voice of "Top Cat"!!

The Prez looked so good in California taking that question from eight-year-old Ethan. I have a feeling that that little boy saved his school and the jobs of his teachers. It was fantastic to watch and here the Prez tell the little boy, he will make a fine police officer. Yep, that is change we can believe in!!!!

We are so glad to have the President here in CA. During the election we felt a little ignored, the democratic party takes Ca for granted alittle bit.

We are hurting here and need all the help we can get. Gov. Arnold has done the best job he could with what he had to work with. The Rep. in the state congress have been a nightmare for all. It is nice to see someone listening to us and taking time to reginize our problems, we are the 8th largest economy in the WORLD so it does no one any good if we go bankrupt.

When I graduated with an BA in 1963, California had one of the best public school systems in the country. Since then proposition this that and the other have crippled school systems all over the country. It's taken us three generations to get into the position where our children leave high school functionally illiterate and ignorant of the most basic concepts of history, democracy or even math. It will take more than a few million dollars from the federal government to fix this self made mess.

Indeed, I was a beneficiary of that great education system in CA had in the sixties and early to mid 70's. It prepped me for a scholarship to go to a private college then to an Ivy (Princeton) for grad school. When you look at the rankings of the best presidents since 1947 in terms of the economy (GDP, Jobs, Deficit Reduction), they are: 1. Clinton, 2. LBJ, 3. Kennedy according to Forbes magazine. Cowboy Saint Reagan comes in at 4th while being one of the worst next to W's daddy for reducing the deficit -- so much for Republican fiscal responsibility. Reagan and his followers killed the idea of "commonwealth." Now we have common ignorance, illness, and poverty. The elite 1% have all the wealth with all the trimmings such as adequate education. Californians are now dumber than a bag of hammers thinking we pay more taxes (yes, in absolute terms because we're... duh... bigger than every other state; however we rank 10th on per capita taxes-- that's the important number). CA was done in by props, and then by the Republican led "free-market" energy scam during W's admin.

Here, here President Obama. Use Schwarzenegger wisely. He is a Republican but very practical. Otherwise, he could not have won the election. He has said things about Obama in the past, but he is very open to the stimulus. He thinks it will be good for California. I live in California (Los Angeles) and we are hurting out here. We are also in the red. Hopefully, we can get rid of some more Republicans in the next election, so we don't have to listen to their ridiculous comments anymore. They are on the wrong side of every issue I hear about. They say stupid things, but what do you expect when their leader is Rush Limbaugh?

Arnold is not in the article but never mind - conservatives do not back him anyway. We learned our lessons with President Bush that there is a lot more one needs to do when elected than just hang a R besides your name - - -

Californians are the highest taxed people in the country and that really says it all - - -

We live in a large country from the Atlantic to the Pacific Oceans, just because the White House happens to be in Washington DC, doesn't mean that the president can't govern from any part of this great country. I am glad he is going from coast to coast to meet the people and explain his policies to them. He needs the people of this country to back him and get together and fight for what will help get healthcare, energy concerns and our economy back on the correct road to we all benefit.

"Listen, and understand. That terminator is out there. It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead."

Do it Arnold! Take out the Republican Party!

I wonder why this AP story didn't mention that PresObama town hall meeting last night was in Orange County, the reddest county in CA, home of Reagan Library. That he was very well received and got many applauses for his comments.
I wonder why?

FYI the Reagan library is in Simi Valley, not OC. OC though is pretty red w/ some exceptions.
