WASHINGTON — The White House is getting a new garden.

First lady Michelle Obama is scheduled to break ground Friday on a new garden near the fountain on the South Lawn that will supply the White House kitchen.

She will be joined by students from Bancroft Elementary School in the District of Columbia. The children will stay involved with the project, including planting the fruits, vegetables and herbs in the coming weeks and harvesting the crops later in the year.

Mrs. Obama spent time earlier this week at an exhibit on rooftop gardening.

"We're going to get a big one in our back yard, the South Lawn," she promised the volunteers.

Such a White House garden has been a dream of noted California chef Alice Waters, considered a leader in the movement to encourage consumption of locally grown, organic food. She has been appealing for change through the taste buds since the 1960s.

She organized a series of fundraising dinners in Washington before President Barack Obama's inauguration in January that served foods purchased from local producers at an area farmer's market to show how it can be done.

Reached Thursday at her Berkeley, Calif., restaurant, Chez Panisse, Waters said she was thrilled by the news.

"It just tells you that this country cares about people's good health and about the care of the land," she said. "To have this sort of 'victory' garden, this message goes out that everyone can grow a garden and have free food."

Victory gardens were vegetable gardens planted during the world wars with encouragement from the government to make sure there was enough food for civilians and the troops. Waters says her family had such a garden.

Waters has been lobbying for a vegetable garden at the White House since 1992. Recent White Houses have grown some herbs and have practiced limited container gardening on the mansion's roof to supply it with tomatoes, peppers and other vegetables.

The new garden will be the first on the White House grounds in many decades, Waters said.

She said Michelle Obama always has been receptive to the idea.

"She talks about food in connection with children, and it's a beautiful thing," Waters said.

Waters also has pushed the administration to adopt her Edible Schoolyard project in which children plant their own produce to eat in the school cafeteria. Most public schools are serving too much processed food that is contributing to the childhood obesity epidemic, she argues.

Hope they include bees, other beneficial insects, and composting in their garden plans.

(Do the Obama's don't know doodley squat about gardening? Didn't the prez and FL both grow up in apartments?)

If you go back a few generations, we are all farmers.

Here in Honolulu there are public gardening allotments available to residents in public parks - there is one quite close to the apartment where President Obama used to live as well as one block away from the high school he used to attend. Whether or not his mother or grandparents gardened, he surely would have been exposed to the practice. Most apartments and condominiums here have lanais (porches or balconies) where many residents grow herbs, fruits and vegetables. Those who are lucky enough to have yards, most of which are small by mainland standards, traditionally plant more fruit trees than strictly ornamental vegetation. In the days before air travel, most food was locally grown. WWII and every shipping and dock worker strike since has kept the tradition alive. With our weather you don't need to know a lot about gardening and with food prices typically much higher than on the mainland, there is a lot of incentive for learning how to grow your own food.

Excellent idea! Kudos to Alice. But shouldn't they start it during the waxing moon?

What a great idea! Why hasn't anyone thought about this before? (There goes the Rose Garden.)

Leave it to foodie Alice Waters who got the idea from a mutual friend of ours who lives in Provence Region in the South of France. Miss Waters got this idea while she lived in France years ago.

Alice did a piece on 60 Minutes last Sunday and her wish was that this would be done at the White House soon. Am so glad the Obama's have followed suit.

I grew up in West Africa and attended a missionary elementary school. At the start of the farming season, every pupil and every class went to the school farm next door. We grew corn, tomatoes, peanuts and yams. We weeded when it was time to do so. I remember with a lot of nostalgia how we would go home during harvest with lots of corn and tomatoes. Our mothers were proud, as we were. It did not affect normal classroom work , and was in my case, a quick introduction to a love for biology, nature study and agricultural science. I live in a condo now, but I dream for a house with enough land to grow my own veggies. Great idea!

Do you realize that President Obama is the president of all 50 states. I'm glad he's taking time to visit ALL the states and hear from the citizens.

Teaching young kids that it is cool to raise and eat your veggies, is wonderful! The Obama's are setting a great healthy-living example for our kids!! We finally have well educated, high achieving people in the White House to set good examples for the next generation! Thank god. It might just give our kids hope to not give up on politics and get involved. Finally. It is cool again to be smart. What a concept. How nice would it be for little ones to want to plant a garden this summer because
the Obama girls did?

Because "the rest of us", being victims and all, can't raise our own gardens. That's a lot of work, you know. It should help tone Michelle's arms getting out there with a rake and hoe, though. I assume she and Barack will be doing almost all the work.

Here in Oregon, what looks like part of a wonderful bumper crop of bell peppers marked USDA Organic are showing up in the stores right now. And the wintertime blueberries from Chile taste better than the summer ones we grow around here -- saying A LOT because Oregon is one of the main blueberry raising states.

So although I'm guilty of not eating local as much as I should, I at least appreciate some of the great produce that our neighbors to the south are producing these days.

EXACTLY!!! What would my body do without all those pesticides? And what would countries such as India do without having their native seeds patented so that they can't use them without purchasing from Monsanto? And of course we can't forget about those genetically engineered seeds. Again, can only purchased from these giants.

Every community should have a garden.

Yes, what great news!

First the White House and next our public schools, get children digging, planting, watering, weeding, and harvesting, all the while enjoying the fresh air and seeing first hand how bountiful nature can be with just a little work.
