Twitter

The Web series, "SuperNews!" has its season premier tonight on Current and for the first episode animator Josh Faure-Brac took on the Twitterverse and the Tweeting Tweeters who Twat on it.

In this sneak peek, Craig introduces his coworker to the newest trend in microblogging by actually flying him into the Twittersphere. There all of the site's users float around talking about their mundane lives, communicating with "bit-sized yippidy yap," trying to become Twitterlebrities.

When the newbie tells the people of the Twitterverse that they actually have no friends, the whole place collapses and the fail whale appears to eat everyone. It's pretty meta, or ridiculous, or both, whatever, it's funny.

They also did a Three's Company spoof with the MySpace, Friendster and Facebook logos that was pretty good.

I never understood twitter, and this video pretty much sums up why I didn't. I liked the analogy of, Twitter is like going to a store that only says ketchup when there is a grocery store right next door.

Oh, man, this is great. So much so that I was finally compelled to shut down my unused Twitter account for good...

Uh oh...turns out the CHOICE to disable your account is currently unavailable...

What's the point of twitter when facebook status does the exact same thing?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:55 PM on 03/21/2009

Exactly. Twitter is like going to a store that only says ketchup when there is a grocery store right next door.

And funnily enough, the most recent Facebook overhaul was an attempt to be MORE like Twitter... pathetic.

Hilarious!

Twitter is destined to become an everlasting punchline like New Coke, Joe the Plumber, and Crocs.

The only thing more tedious and self-indulgent than Twitter is a four-and-a-half minute cartoon about how tedious and self-indulgent Twitter is.

The only thing more tedious than posers who try to feign ironic detachment from spot on humorous cartoons that poke fun at dopey social phenomena is nothing.

I actually find Twitter fairly obnoxious, and I think it's still 95% hype at this point, so I'm just about the last person to jump in and defend it. But I also thought the same thing about text messaging five years ago, so I'm not jumping on the Twitter backlash bandwagon just yet either.

My problem with the cartoon was that we've already heard every single joke in it applied to every other online fad/innovation of the last decade. You could replace "Twitter" with "blogging," "LiveJournal," "Friendster," "MySpace" or "Facebook" and not have to change a single punchline. The formula has been so well established, it practically writes itself:

"Doesn't [internet fad] have a stupid name? Let me riff on that by coming up with a wacky verb derived from its name to describe using it! And aren't the people who use it a bunch of losers? They just post meaningless garbage that no one wants to read, because they don't have any real-life friends! I bet if one of them was seriously injured, they'd use [internet fad] to tell all of their fake friends about it rather than call 911! LOLZ!!"

So please don't take my dislike of the cartoon as feigning ironic anything. I just thought it was lazy, predictable, and the 2009 equivalent of telling kids to get off your lawn.

No way that would ever happen to Jonah. Or Pinocchio.

I am definitely going to have to tweet both this comment and this story.

Forget the Fail Whale, lately all I see is is ForTheWin Dolphin!

Twitter is the human equivalent of the Stock Market Quotes Ticker, unlike the other broader sites and activities you refer to, it does nothing except allow people with a lot of free time to relay their self confidence averages. And just like the macro economy, humanity as seen through Twitter is also experiencing a great depression.

Nice work Current...

Finally...Twitter is exposed as the bizarre pseudo-voyeuristic time wasting garbage that it is.
