PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Here's a job opportunity you won't need to buy a new wardrobe for.

Hoping to take advantage of Rhode Island's floundering economy, owners of the Foxy Lady strip club in Providence plan to hold a job fair on Saturday.

They say they're looking to fill around 30 positions, from strippers and waitresses to disc jockeys and bartenders, at that club and two others in Massachusetts.

"I need more managers, I need more competent staff, and I need more attractive waitresses to go along with the ones I have right now," said co-owner Tom Tsoumas.

The naked truth is that Rhode Island's economy is among the worst in the nation, with an unemployment rate of 10.3 percent in January.

The Providence club isn't immune from the recession but is still drawing customers willing to drink and pay for lap dances, said manager Bob Travisono.

"It's taken a hit," he said. "It's not as bad as restaurants and stuff like that. In times like this, they seem to drink their sorrows away."

Tsoumas said he hopes some who might shun strip clubs when the economy is good might consider shedding their clothes now _ or at least working as a floor host or bartender.

They need more people to exploit for their house fees since revenue from actual customers is down

There are many mothers that strip for a living because of lack of education. This is what the President is trying to stop by investing in education for all who wants it, because the future jobs will demands a good education. You know, we all complain that high paying job goes overseas, but, why don't we look at the real reason, because Americans are not educated in order to fill those positions. Sorry, I blame Bush and the Republicants, who doesn't believe in that venue.

"Single mothers having to strip" is pure myth. And it's an easily dispelled one at that. Go to a strip club. You'll find the vast majority are just what you'd expect. 20-something girls with no job (other than stripping) no kids, and a perfectly fine education.

Stripping has nothing to do with education, and it certainly has nothing to do with Obama.

Right, stripping will always exists because its good $$ and pretty recession proof

You're wrong about strippers being uneducated, while there are certainly those types of girls there who do it because they can't do anything else, but there are also many who are very well educated and do it because they still can, because it's good exercise, it feeds their ego, and it's fun. Also if you have kids, it gives you more time to spend with them than most jobs. Anyone who can sell a lot of dances though can probably sell a lot of anything else they have to sell so the girls who make "good money" ( not all of them do) would make good money in any sales related field. It is NOT recession proof. The reason they are still hiring despite slower business is that the clubs don't pay dancers, dancers pay the club to work. The more dancers on staff, the more the club makes in house fees (makes up for loss of revenue from customers) Girls bring home less with more people working, but at least they don't have to look for a job.

Is there a discernible pattern regarding which states hve the weakest economies? Isn't it clear that the more liberal and Democratic a state, the worse its finances? And does this portend anything about Obama's plans to "improve" the economy of the whole country?

Just thinking...

California, Rhode Island, New Jersey, Michigan...hmmmm...even Ohio's going lefty and becoming a loser...just thinking...

South Carolina? Indiana? Tennessee? Mississippi? North Carolina? Leftists?

How about some REAL trends.

There are currently states who receive less back from the Feds than they send in to the Feds in the form of taxes. So here is my modest proposal: Let's give out the bailout $$ to the states in reverse order, that is the state who currently gets the least in Federal spending per $ in Federal taxes will get the most from the bailout, and the state who currently gets the most Federal spending per $ in Federal taxes will get the least (if there is any $$ left). The non-partisian (actually right-leaning) Tax Foundation compiles the #'s and has figured out rankings for the states.

Based on The Tax Foundations #'s that would leave us giving the $$ first to NJ, then NV, then CT, NH, MN, IL, DE, CA, NY, CO, MA, WI, WA, MI, OR, TX, FL, RI … notice a little trend in those states that received less federal $ per $ in federal taxes???

Who did 17 of the 18 vote for President - Obama?

19 of the 25 “worst” states (States recieving more than $1.10 in Federal spending per $1.00 in Federal Taxes paid), who did 19 of those 25 vote for? … McCain!!!!

You might think twice about bashing "leftist states" when you realize that those who live in red welfare states are dependent upon blue states for economic survival!

That is not a map of the 2008 election. That is a map of welfare states in red and the states that support them in blue!

I have a more modest proposal: Let's stop taxing everybody so much, cut the size of the federal nanny state, and return to those thrilling days of federalism wherein the states stopped sucking off the federal government and were more responsive to their citizens.

Let's repeal the 17th Amendment which has turned our senators into superpanderers rather than statesmen and has made them less responsive to the needs of their own states.

Let's repeal the 16th Amendment authorizing the income tax.

Let's go back to the old and original and better version of the Constitution.

And thanks much, but I'll continue to bash red states that run huge deficits and then cry for bailouts.

I was in Providence this week. The conditions are horrible..second highet unemployment in the nation, #1in the nation with bogus subprime morgages, people having a terrible time receiving unemployment checks, soup kitchens going bust. People are very angry and desperate. Maybe a job at the Foxy will help some very desperate souls...

Not from what I have heard and seen. Obama and others have a lot of societal inertia to overcome.

How do you know when the economy is bad? When they hold job fairs to be a stripper.

The exploitational aspects of this story aside, perhaps this is a step in the right direction. That direction being the recognition that sexuality is important and deserves recognition for what it is...and for what it isn't...and one thing it's not is the idealized man/woman marriage relationship that has been pounded into our heads for so long. People have evolved sexual interests that are complex and changeable, and yet some of us, usually the same ones (those with type A personalities...and we all know what the "A" stands for...unless you yourself are an "A") think we should all be following the same script..usually one they themselves don't observe because "A" types are special leaders..or so they think). Currently the business or erotic behaviors is relegated to a peripheral position, marginalized and laughed at, held in scorn and accused of being immoral. Imagine that.. the religions that have burned innocents and beheaded those who disagree get their panties in a wad over "immorality" of their otherwise fun seeking monkeys.
Our simian ancestry insures that our sexual dynamics will be widely varied and include characteristics such as furtiveness, stealthyness as well as exhibitionism and group activity with sexual activities that may not be to one's likeing but comes into a troubling existence when official rules bar its expression. End the repression of human sexuality and support workers who bring this to our consenting and willing fellow humans. Until then, gather your rosebuds while you may.
