If I Stay Twilight

The Daily Beast:

Gayle Forman's young-adult novel If I Stay won't be published until April, but it's already being adapted for Hollywood by the studio behind the blockbuster vampire movie. Will it eclipse Twilight?

The next 'Twilight' as in lackluster writing and shallow characters?

A book by a woman about a young woman that will be a movie directed by a woman. I am glad because it is so rare. Nice!

Of course Twilight was a book by a woman about a woman whose movie was also directed by this other woman. And it was a horrible mess.

Let's see if I got this straight. A devout Mormon lady has a dream about a sparkly vampire in a field. She decides to write a book about this and makes the main character a Mary Sue. She then writes a painfully obvious self-insert fantasy. The book is full of cliche characters, bad writing and plot holes (oh and a centuries-old virgin vampire, gotta love religious dogma in a vampire book).

Teen girls buy this up and it's sequels because "OMG I want a bf just like Edward!" and only catch on that something is bad when they get to the final book which features her shoehorning her Mormon traditions into it as well as a monster baby, explosive pregnancy and a pedophile werewolf.

They then adapt the first book to film which fans of the book go to see to ogle Edward.

Stephanie Meyer made her money by being a talentless hack who just happened to have fantasies in common with millions of girls half her age.

It sounds interesting, and I'd be more apt to read it than a "Twilight" clone.

The next Twilight? I see no mention whatsoever of a romantic storyline, much less one involving creepy old supernatural stalkers.

This sounds like a fine work, but you're not going to have every 13-yo girl and every 45-yo housebound cat lady in the country furtively writing fanfic about it unless they are offered a boy (preferably several) and lots of schmoop.
