I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Michelle Pfeiffer

Michelle Pfeiffer is the object of a young man's affection in this summer's Miramax release "Cheri." Pfeiffer, 50, plays a "seductress" and has multiple love scenes with actor Rupert Friend, 27. Friend is best known as a Wickham in "Pride & Prejudice" and the real-life boyfriend of Keira Knightley.

According to the film's website:

It is turn of the century in Belle Epoque Paris and a scandalous romp is underfoot. The sensational tale begins as the ravishing Lea (Michelle Pfeiffer) contemplates retirement from her renowned stature as Paris's most envied seductress to the rich and famous. Her plans are cut short when she is approached by a former courtesan and arch rival, the barb-throwing gossip Charlotte Peloux (Kathy Bates), who encourages Lea to teach her disaffected 19 year-old son - a bon vivant nicknamed "Cheri" (Rupert Friend) - a thing or two about women. The resulting escapades involve power struggles over sex, money, age and society - and, unexpectedly, love itself - as a boy who refuses to grow up collides with a woman who realizes she cannot stay young forever.

Some still have hit this web and the film is out in June.

Michelle Pfeiffer is a babe, hotter than most women younger than her, she makes them look trivial. Nothing hotter than seeing this screen gem in a movie, doesn't matter how good or bad the film is, she's enjoyable to watch.

I love Michelle Pfeiffer. She's done some bad films with bad scripts but her good ones e.g., "Married To The Mob", "Hairspray" etc were terrific. At 50 or whatever she also still looks hot. She can also play costume dramas well so this should be a good one.

It could not be more obvious this role was chosen for it's tittilation factor and nothing else.

Michelle is tres boring. Always has been.

"A scandalous romp is underfoot"? Whoever wrote that piece of tripe needs to be placed 'underfoot' and squished.

Michelle Pfeiffer at any age is still Michelle Pfeiffer. She is Catwoman! Hear her roar!

Amazing that this still has to be pointed out, but no one would even notice a 50-year old guy in a hot movie with a 27- year old woman. It is the Hollywood norm. So why all the fuss?

That is one lucky 20 something. Michelle has always been an extraordinarily beautiful woman. My 12 year old son saw Stardust and commented about the witch turning into a hot woman. No doubt. She has aged wonderfully, apparently without all of the ridicules surgeries etc.

Yup, this is based on a novel by Colette of the same name. Its short and sweet and terribly French if anyone is in the mood for that sort of thing.

Also, from looking at the pictures, I think Michelle's "Lea" has been done up to somewhat resemble Colette herself. The reddish abundant curls in an updo is very much Colette. Of course, she was a much larger woman, and the character of Lea was never meant to be a stand-in for the author, exactly, but (but!) Colette did famously have a similar May-December romance herself.... of course, hers was with her stepson....

I went to the library yesterday and borrowed "The Colette Omnibus," which contains five of her best works: "Cheri, The Last of Cheri, Gigi, The Vagabond," and "The Shackle." It was published in 1974 but smells a bit more ancient. It looks well worth the sneezes it will no doubt cause.

Thanks for confirming it's based on the short story by Colette. If I remember right, though, Cheri runs to his older mistress when marriage to a young bride scares him (all the responsibility) and then realizes at the end of the story that his mistress is too old for him, and he wants to go back to his wife. I wonder if Hollywood will be true to that part of the story.

I believe the novel was written by Colette, and it is such a good novel it is hard to believe any movie could surpass it. It should also be noted that Colette wrote many novels that her husband signed as his, until she grew up and threw him under the bus. I regret that the writer of this review also failed to give Colette the recognition she deserves!

She's one of those exceptional actors that - because of prevailing social biases - is rarely challenged. But when she is (as in 'The Age of Innocence', just for example), she positively shines.

I hope this role is one that allows her to test her mettle.

You're kidding - right? I think Michelle Pfeiffer is movie poison. She's very beautiful, but she was definitely the weak link in both "The Age of Innocence" and "Dangerous Liaisons". Incredibly stiff and pale in both roles.

While I loved "Dangerous Liaisons," there seemed to be zilch chemistry between Daniel Day Lewis and her in "The Age of Innocence." I wonder why?
