What's Your Reaction?
Gingrich

Newt Gingrich has lately been on the scene, attempting to convince people that he owns a portfolio of self-conceived innovations for the GOP and for America, but this marketing campaign has mostly proven to be unconvincing for anyone with cerebral activity. Matt Yglesias pretty much called this one correctly when he noted: "At his best, Gingrich is good at dressing up an interest-group agenda (let us drill more places) as something somewhat more ennobling." You'll hear similar criticism from reform-minded Republicans like Ross Douthat, as well. I tend to think that Gingrich basically oversells some incremental acknowledgments to the fact that the world has up and left him behind as a means of reselling his old bill of goods.

That's why the news that Gingrich is going to take a deep dive into the well of religious fanaticism is hardly surprising:

Gingrich has launched an organization devoted to bringing conservative evangelicals and Catholics into the political process and to strengthening the frayed alliance between economic and religious conservatives. Called Renewing American Leadership, the group is led by Gingrich's longtime communications director and includes some of the country's top conservative Christian activists on its board.

Yes, you are right. It is this attempt at reconciling economic conservatism with a bunch of zealots who want their off-putting, theocratic demands met at all times that has cost the Republican party a broad swath of middle-of-the-road voters. But what else does Gingrich know how to do? Naturally, this idea comes enrobed in the vapor of new ideas - or at least what some people will tell you is new:

"In the last few years I've decided that we're in a crisis in which the secular state, if allowed, will fundamentally and radically change America against the wishes of most Americans," Gingrich said in a phone interview on Thursday. "You've had such rising hostility to religious belief that I wanted to reach broadly into the country and dramatically raise public awareness of threats to religious liberty."

Right. Such hostility! Why just last weekend I was at sixes and sevens, trying to decide whether I should go to the public crucifixion or just relax with some good old missionary-vs-lion action on ESPN2. It's just so hard out there for religion, what with all the tax-exemptions and the widespread freedoms of worship!

Anyway, once you strip off the fashionable neo-martyrism of the message, what do you get underneath? Just the same old interest group agendas:

Just this week, Gingrich's new group partnered with the American Family Association--the conservative evangelical organization headed Don Wildmon--to encourage churches and religious groups to participate in no-more-taxes rallies across the country on April 15. Rick Tyler, who served as Gingrich's spokesman before becoming founding director of Renewing American Leadership, says that on the first day of the largely Web-based organizing effort, 5,000 people signed up to attend the rallies.

Right. The Club For Growth is still looking for Jesus' endorsement, I guess. This is the "new idea" that Gingrich believes is going to restore the GOP? There's just not a single drop of zeit or geist to be found.

Instead of reaching out to rational, intelligent people who have a problem with MORE spending, government regulations and socialistic measures but don't like the talk show mentality of today's righ;, he goes and tries to rope all the mental midgets who admire Bush and Palin, as if they were going towards Obama in the first place

With the most sincere wish for his well being, I respectfully wish Newt would shut the hell up!!!! It is time for the Democrats to not only take control of this government, we should also drum home the fact that it was the Bushie boy who put us here with his "FREE MARKET" strategy. I will fight to the last breath any theocrat who wants to take this once great nation down any road led by another Zealot.
I honor my God every day of my life, I honor my country every minute.

Where else can he go to appeal to ignorance and hatred. It has to be understood that the American right is trying re-establish a "gold standard" somewhere in society. The sand is shifting under their feet because the philosophy of Jesus doesn't simply reside in the private domain of the evangelicals anymore. We understand that the principles are universal and they don't teach exclusion, but universality.

C'mon America... give it up!

AKA more fear mongering.

The more I consider this - I don't think he wants to run for President. He sees $$$$.
He knows his cheating will probably kill his chances.
It's easy to make money off of lambs to the slaughter.

In my 65 years of life, it has always been a fight to keep religious control at bay. I have
lost the will to be diplomatic. I will not allow even the 6000 year wackos to ring my doorbell
without digging in my heels and insulting them with facts of Science and Math. The Reagan
years inspired religious nuts to take on management jobs, not to manage business, but to
punish free thinkers with all sorts of authoritorian inconsistanties. Do not give more power to
these people. If fact the world will be a better place if the supernatural crowd is reduced to
the level of the flat earth society. Hey you, religous nut, your going to die and go nowhere like
the rest of us!

The appeal to "Christian persecution" seems to always be a potent force for political mobilization. So for now we have the insane shooting up liberal churches or even conservative churches that don't tow the rightwing line. God help us all if a genuine civil war erupts around some pandering demagogue. Required reading: "Elmer Gantry for a study in hypocrisy"; "The Handmaid's Tale" to learn how bad a Christian rightwing takeover could be.

Good ole' Newt still hasn't figured out that the combination of radical right wing religious fanatics isn't good for the American citizens.

He'll never give up this agenda as long as he feels it's doing him some good politically.

What a jerk!

The fact that Newt feels like he needs to kiss the religious right's butts if he wants a shot at the nomination in 2012 is just more evidence of who actually runs the GOP. McCain excepted one of their own as a VP candidate in return for their backing and now Newt is lining himself up too.

During biblical times, these same religious leaders Newt is partnering with now, would be standing in a circle around him with rocks in their hands.

Why don't Baptist have sex standing up?

Cause God might think they're danc'in!

Sorry, I coundn't resist.

Of course Newt doesn't realize that we have wonderful religious freedoms right now - the freedom to worship the deity of your choice, or to worship none. The freedom to believe or not. What his agenda promotes is the idea that everyone must be subject to the religious ideology of a few. One way or no way. Organizations like his are the number one threat to religious freedom in America. Newt and his buddies are too blinded by their own moral superiority to see that.

Crying persecution is a standard religious right tactic. What they mean is they want to be free to force their religious doctrine on the entire nation. These people want to make this the Christian version of Iran with themselves as the Ayatollahs. Since they consider themselves doing God's will they are forgiven any sin committed to achieve their goal. Sound familiar? Bin Laden uses the same justification.

Right. Christians aren't persecuted. We are the only people who have lost freedom of speech. ( can't even read Rom. 1 in three states without being charged with a crime). You can celibrate every faith in public except Christianity. Rosie O. can spew her hate toward Christians, and thats not hate, but let a Christian say anything about her and thats called hate. Nobody is forcing Christianity on anyone . So if you want to believe you have monkies in your family tree thats O.K. with me. And if I want to believe I was created by God I don't see why you have to be hateful bcause of it.

Ah but Evangelicals are very good at forgiving their sins when it comes to their lust for power over everyone's lives. How else can they save us from ourselves.

Hey, JeffyBoy. How about your George Bush? Did you approve of our going to Iraq for no good reason and killing almost 4300 of our own soldiers now and thousands of innocent Iraqis? Do you approve of holding "suspected but not proven" enemy combatants for 7 years now without any trial? How about when you heard -- if you did - that Cheney might have actually had his own little "hit squad" running. Do you believe in killing someone without a trial?

I'm always curious about the religious zealots in this country. They think the gods put us here when Jesus came on the scene. In fact, man has been on this planet for millions of years and the "Greatest Story Ever Told," is probably just that, used as a guilt trip to keep civilizations from destroying themselves.

I used to drive my Lutheran pastor crazy in confirmation (before one can take communion) by asking them if the cavemen went to heaven since they didn't know Jesus. Do you know the answer?
