WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says treasury secretary is one job that's not up for grabs.

In an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes" Obama said that if Treasury chief Timothy Geithner offered his resignation, the answer would be, "Sorry buddy, you've still got the job."

Obama also took the opportunity to strike back at recent comments by former Vice President Dick Cheney, who claimed that plans to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center will make the U.S. less safe.

Obama contended that the Bush administration's policy of holding detainees for years on end with no trials is "unsustainable," and has only fueled anti-American sentiments. At the same time, Obama said that U.S. authorities haven't done a good job determining who should be released from the Navy base in Cuba.

On Geithner, Obama reiterated his support for the beleaguered secretary who has been roundly criticized over the recent corporate bonus flap and steps to revive the economy. And he urged patience.

"It's going to take a little bit more time than we would like to make sure that we get this plan just right. Of course, then we'd still be subject to criticism," he said in the interview, taped Friday and set to air Sunday evening. "What's taken so long? You've been in office a whole 40 days and you haven't solved the greatest financial crisis since the Great Depression."

CBS released excerpts Saturday.

Obama also said corporate executives would better understand the public's outrage over bonuses if they ventured out of New York and spent time in Iowa or Arkansas. There, he said, people are thrilled to be making $75,000 a year with no bonuses.

Story continues below

Public outrage spilled over last week after revelations that struggling insurance giant American International Group Inc. doled out $165 million in bonuses to employees, including to traders in the financial unit that nearly caused the company's collapse.

On the Bush administration's detainee policies, Obama noted the hundreds of men at Guantanamo who have been held for several years.

"How many terrorists have actually been brought to justice under the philosophy that is being promoted by Vice President Cheney?" Obama said. The Bush administration's policy, Obama said, "hasn't made us safer."

Among those who have been released, more than 60 former Guantanamo detainees are believed to have rejoined the fight, the Pentagon says.

"There is no doubt that we have not done a particularly effective job in sorting through who are truly dangerous individuals to make sure (they) are not a threat to us," Obama said.

Some 800 men have been held at Guantanamo since the prison opened in January 2002, and 240 remain. Some are admitted terrorists, including confessed Sept. 11 plotter Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who was transferred to Guantanamo from CIA custody in September 2006. But officials have said that many may have been innocent men unconnected to the Taliban or al-Qaida, but were swept up by U.S. forces in the early days of the Afghanistan war.

Since taking office, Obama has taken aim at Bush administration policies, suspending military trials for suspected terrorists and announcing he will close Guantanamo and other overseas sites where the CIA has held some detainees. The president also ordered CIA interrogators to abide by the U.S. Army Field Manual's regulations for treatment of detainees and denounced waterboarding, part of the Bush program of enhanced interrogation, as torture.

On CNN last weekend, Cheney charged that those moves have made the country less safe and raised the risk of another attack.

Speaking of Barack Obama: LONG LIVE EMPEROR OBAMA!

Obama is a racial-minority individual and does not like racism:

There is bad news about George Herbert Walker Bush.

What if basically all racial-minority people would subscribe to the interpretations that George Herbert Walker Bush committed monstrous, racist, hate crimes while he was the President of the United States?

It will eventually come out: it is only a matter of time.

When is Obama going to get off the talk circuit and start acting presidential. He is a celebrity at heart, it seems. Is he going to campaign forever? He spent his whole term as a senator campaigning, I was right when I thought he was too much like a rock star. I am still waiting to see what all the emotion to elect him was about. I had hoped.

What is he campaigning ? On how he is trying to solve the crisis ? He is our President and unless you have been living under a rock you would know how much he has been working hard and the things he has accomplished so far. I hope we continue to see him on TV keeping us informed of what is going on. I would rather him reach out to America using television programs then give us an Oval office programmed boring speech every couple of months. So far so good and looks like majority of America approves !

AMEN! It is refreshing to see him working hard to "right" the course of our country - - the one that the former administration and their cronies did their best to sink. You Go Mr. President!

Do you want to be left in the dark and lied to again? I don't think he's being a celebrity - I think he's respecting the American people and keeping them informed. Not all politicians think that the citizen body of this country is daft and incapable of processing information. He constantly addresses the nation as if we are intelligent and he wants us to participate. Celebrity? Now talk about Rush, Sarah and Dick.

A PRESIDEnts job is to set the goals of his administration and to communicate them to the people. President Obama is doing just that. Keep it up Sir!

Insightful? I don't think so. It has been so long since you have had a President who has the intellectual and coherent ability to communicate that you have forgotten how important it is for our elected leader to be visible and in touch with his or her constituents. You never saw your guy, BUSH, make these appearances because he lacked the ability to communicate and on the rare occasions when he tried, he made a fool of himself and his country.

When Obama refers to Cheney, it is almost like someone who understands and respects the rule of law and the constitution talking to the former head of a South American military junta. Cheney does not seem to understand constitutional protections and the rule of law that extends even during wartime. Cheney uses a threat of terrorism to dissemble our constitutional protections and keep us on a permanent war footing to drastically reduce our civil liberties and aggrandize his own powers. Obama understands our privacies are worth protecting and it is not worth bankrupting the country to protect us from a mostly manufactured threat of terrorism, which is often real, but better handled through the cooperation of intelligence services.

Are you Punch-Drunk? Wow. Im glad the President finds our current economic crisis so funny. Good job America you elected a media made Celebrity akin to Paris Hilton. Although, Im not surprised an Elitist would laugh at the common man's problems in this economy. This guy has a LONG way to go to acting, let alone being, Presidential.
Stay off Leno, 60 Minutes and get down to business Mr. President... The American people need guidance and leadership. Not a celebrity.

Patriot? What a joke...

You'd find something to fault if he stayed in DC and worked 24/7 on this. For most of us here, we find his intellect and humor in a tough situation refreshing. Thats not a blanket statement saying I agree with everything he says or does.

You think its refreshing that our President is laughing in an interview when the interviewer is talking about the state of our nations economy? Is there something funny about our economy that I missed? Is there something funny with a projected $10 trillion deficit? Is there something funny about rushing bills through congress without reading them? Maybe what you find funny is Obama filling out his bracket? I liken that to Nero playing the fiddle while Rome burned. Or maybe it was his Special Olympics comment on Leno that you find refreshing or funny?

To: PatriotOH:

The President displayed a very calm presence in the midst of the economic storm...one of the very reasons he trumped John McCain who was panicking and "suspending his campaign" rushing to Washington...with no communication contributed to the conversation while at the White House with the previous administration..although at that same time...it was reported that Obama who relunctantly went there... because he did not want to exploit the crisis for political gains...like McCain and yet it was Obama that asked and contributed to the conversation then ...with that same calm demeanor that we so desperately need in such times as these. I am glad that he keeps a sense of humor. If he was shown panicky and desperate...you would be the main one complaining how he is not able to handle the crisis. I do not know about you...but the steady hand is much better than a trembling hand.

Interesting watching Dick Cheney trying to rewrite history or spin things around. The thins he says are as nonsensical as ever and the things he has done seem to include crimality ranging from creating a war for oil to conducting assassinations out of his office, to treason of several kinds, illegal surveillance of Americans prior to 911, etc.... Yes, he is very interested in Scooter Libby knowing that he wanted Scooter pardoned - because it was Cheney, not Scooter who outed Plame and Scooter has no real reason not to say so. Who can say for certain? Hopefully Holder and some good detectives and some good judges...

New Yorkers are just as angry as folks in other States. Our real estate costs have gone through the roof because of the Ponzi schemers on Wall Street driving up the Market to outrageous levels. Now the 20% of jobs on Wall Street will have to come down to Earth and maybe the cost of living will do so as well.

New Yorkers who do not work on/for Wall Street have to bear the burdens of inflated costs driven by one-fifth of our City's workers - while making ordinary salaries.

And, President Obama - who I support - must remember that all corporate execs do not work/reside in NYC. There are 50 other States where corporate execs have outsourced jobs overseas and gamble right along with their financiers on Wall Street.

May the bubble that has driven our culture and way of life into a ditch - end once and for. And, may my beloved NYC - and Manhattan Island - once again become a beacon for those wishing to get a fresh start, as we have historically been.

Everyone was running around getting themselves in a deeper situation, especially the Republicans they went against every thing that they suppose to believe in and voted for a 90% tax hike. President Obama was calm, cool and collective and he continued his schedule and I supported him completely. I was amazed of the people that claimed they voted for him, if they weren't Republicans but turned on him so quick after eight years of BULL CRAP. "They beginned there comment with I voted for him but" There is no but he a a big mess to clean up you have to be patience and keep your eye on the ball.

There are a lot of people in this country with a sort of authoritarian/slave mentality. They are not used to having a leader who puts them in the forefront. They want a father figure like Bush to "think" for him. These people are non-thinking, hateful of anybody not exactly like them and arguing with them is a waste of time.

I wonder what would become of us if we had a President that reacted like Congress did like we did. Not thinking things through and just reacting based on emotions. The guy has been on the job two months he is a secretary that probably has the most to do ever and folks are ready to just throw him to the wolves. Since when did we get like this. How come we werent like this with Paulson Exectives getting bonus after they've been bailed out is NOT NEW.

Everyone is talking about Obama needing to identify with populist outrage but remember what happened with 911 with Bush emotional speech about how we are going to find these people we are going to make them pay. Well that got us into two wars one of them ILLEGAL. We need a President with a calm head who can calm people who can channel their emotions in the right direction rather than the wrong one.

More proof that there really is no such thing as a Liberal Media like the GOP ALWAYS tries to imply.
The way the media has been acting since Obama was sworn in should dispel any idea that the media is controlled by Liberals!
The GOP wants the entire country enraged so they can then direct that rage towards Obama.

All they do is find a story and ride until its dead because it is far easier to report about differing aspects of the same thing for days on end than it is to generate stories that require real research... they are pathetic. The only place I ever find "journalism" is on NPR or sometimes on Bloomberg. Aside from that, our MSM continues to fail us.
