WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama says treasury secretary is one job that's not up for grabs.

In an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes" Obama said that if Treasury chief Timothy Geithner offered his resignation, the answer would be, "Sorry buddy, you've still got the job."

Obama also took the opportunity to strike back at recent comments by former Vice President Dick Cheney, who claimed that plans to close the Guantanamo Bay detention center will make the U.S. less safe.

Obama contended that the Bush administration's policy of holding detainees for years on end with no trials is "unsustainable," and has only fueled anti-American sentiments. At the same time, Obama said that U.S. authorities haven't done a good job determining who should be released from the Navy base in Cuba.

On Geithner, Obama reiterated his support for the beleaguered secretary who has been roundly criticized over the recent corporate bonus flap and steps to revive the economy. And he urged patience.

"It's going to take a little bit more time than we would like to make sure that we get this plan just right. Of course, then we'd still be subject to criticism," he said in the interview, taped Friday and set to air Sunday evening. "What's taken so long? You've been in office a whole 40 days and you haven't solved the greatest financial crisis since the Great Depression."

CBS released excerpts Saturday.

Obama also said corporate executives would better understand the public's outrage over bonuses if they ventured out of New York and spent time in Iowa or Arkansas. There, he said, people are thrilled to be making $75,000 a year with no bonuses.

Story continues below

Public outrage spilled over last week after revelations that struggling insurance giant American International Group Inc. doled out $165 million in bonuses to employees, including to traders in the financial unit that nearly caused the company's collapse.

On the Bush administration's detainee policies, Obama noted the hundreds of men at Guantanamo who have been held for several years.

"How many terrorists have actually been brought to justice under the philosophy that is being promoted by Vice President Cheney?" Obama said. The Bush administration's policy, Obama said, "hasn't made us safer."

Among those who have been released, more than 60 former Guantanamo detainees are believed to have rejoined the fight, the Pentagon says.

"There is no doubt that we have not done a particularly effective job in sorting through who are truly dangerous individuals to make sure (they) are not a threat to us," Obama said.

Some 800 men have been held at Guantanamo since the prison opened in January 2002, and 240 remain. Some are admitted terrorists, including confessed Sept. 11 plotter Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who was transferred to Guantanamo from CIA custody in September 2006. But officials have said that many may have been innocent men unconnected to the Taliban or al-Qaida, but were swept up by U.S. forces in the early days of the Afghanistan war.

Since taking office, Obama has taken aim at Bush administration policies, suspending military trials for suspected terrorists and announcing he will close Guantanamo and other overseas sites where the CIA has held some detainees. The president also ordered CIA interrogators to abide by the U.S. Army Field Manual's regulations for treatment of detainees and denounced waterboarding, part of the Bush program of enhanced interrogation, as torture.

On CNN last weekend, Cheney charged that those moves have made the country less safe and raised the risk of another attack.

Republicans/Conservatives have lost the argument on outrage. They have forfeited the right to disagree. They have forfeited the right to demand 'fiscal responsibility' when it comes to the size of the debt. They have forfeited the right to be indignant over the President's budget. They have forfeited the right to proclaim moral superiority and to assert they have a monopoly on 'values'. After their DESTRUCTIVE incompetence over the previous 8 years and their general contempt for governing, they have simply forfeited their rights to judge this president, his agenda, or the will of the people. The reign of 'King George' and his criminal administration is over. WE get to govern now.

I like the description "Destructive Incompetence." I usually refer to such failures of basic human values and professional ethics as criminal stupidity. But you are right, they were incompetent because they were so far in over their heads they just flailed about causing as much damage as they could because they could.

Are you really that dense?

Why are you not aware that the determination of the commission of war crimes has already been made by the relevant authority for doing just that -- The International Committee of the Red Cross -- and also that there is already an admission on the record to using torture -- a war crime -- by the Bush Administration?

They already admitted it, Stooge.

"Unsustainable" Of all the words Obama could have chosen, he picked "unsustainable"? After this last week, I'd be happy NOT to hear anymore from this 'Great Orator', at least until he has some good and I'd like that news delivered in written form. (Maybe he could manage to get someone to proof read it before it's released.)

Its helpful to read sentences in complete form rather than picking on a word and running away with it. The era of fast-food politics and drive by policies is gone. What justice was done to the 911 victims when all Bush did was incarcerate 14 yr olds in the name of enemy combatants while bin Laden was rebuilding his empire in Afghanistan?

Cheney needs to get over his God complex and stop acting as if he and Bush are some sort of messiah or something. Also, they should stop trying to take credit for keeping the USA safe. I think that honor goes to the troops.

What Cheney ALSO said was bragging about how household wealthy had increased in the 30 years republicans have controlled Congress/and/or the White House.

Like we're not supposed to notice the wealthy got wealthier, while the country strangled almost to death.

30 years of republican tax cuts for the wealthy, and winning elective office by pitting Americans against Americans With Reagan it was welfare queens... with the Bushes its gays and women, blacks, hispanics, blue collar workers, liberals, moderates, democrats, veterans, Native Americans.

Tell Mr. Cheney that we remember, even if he does not.

LITU,
This why the GOP has had a war against public education. Educated people, especially college graduates, tend to read and understand nuance, They move to big cities where they read and discover cultural diversity and they vote Democrat. Look at the electorial maps.. education and cultural diversity= Democrat. Lack of education and lack of exposure to the real "global" world= Republican.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:14 PM on 03/21/2009

The GOP has not waged a war on public education. They're understandably not crazy about the teachers' unions. Liberals claim to be for the underclass but rather than give people from impoverished communities a chance to go to private schools, they'd rather keep them in the same failing school. What's educated or nuanced about that line of reasoning?
And to the elctoral map, New York used to have 41 electoral votes. Now they have 31. Guess people are moving to those "hick" places you talked about. California has 55 elecfor now. However, in the late 60's 9% of their population was foreign born. Now that percentage is 28. Nancy Pelosi wants ICE to stop the raids. She needs those illegal aliens who vote Democrat because fewer and fewer indigenous Americans are. And the ones that pay taxes are moving to neighboring states. http://theclosetconservative.com

I definitely agree with your point on education. I have been saying that myself for years. There is no denying the fact that republicans can't win if people actually know anything. It is so sad during election time, to see all those poor, rural uneducated people out there cheering when republicans say " lower taxes" and " we gotta cut social programs because you people dont want big old scary government helping you out " while conveniently leaving out that those breaks are for rich people and those poor people rely on those programs, but are just too clueless to realize it. Education will always be power and this time I hope Obama wins this fight.

Two reasons why Republicans hate (public) education:

!. As stated above, the educated tend to vote Democrat. So keep 'em dumb and ignorant.

2. Teachers tend to vote Democrat. So de-fund the public schools through vouchers. Leave no child behind -- except the millions left behind.

Mr. President, you should head your own advice. We know about liberals and mock outrage when it turns out that Chris Dodd inserted language into the bill precenting restrictions on bonuses. And he did so at the behest of President Obama. And now they're using a mess they created to gin up public anger at capitalists. Oh wait, I forgot. it's all Bush's fault. There was a political party during World War I that used similar tactics: The Bolsheviks. http://theclosetconservative.com

Let me school you a bit, the provision that Dodd entered was never meant to be abused this way. It was to ensure that responsible executives who do excellent work and contribute to the fixing and growth of these companies did in fact get the pay they deserve. In other words, if you perform well you would be paid well.

Instead, the greedy execs at these firms went ahead and paid themselves well for messes they made last year. So with the thought of good corporate governance, the Dems made sure that good capitalism would prevail, instead, these idiots took advantage of the situation. Yet they turn around and cry when regulations are implemented.

Guess what, Corporate America is strongly republican, they are the ones who want to see the continued privatization of essential services at the behest of the American people.

The new administration and congress tried, they tried to fix the problems and give a life line to these greedy punks, yet they bit the hand that tried to help them.

They pay of all of these are so over inflated that they are robbing from you. Its a tax write off that you pay for. The treasury can not tax the company on over 250 million in the case of the bonus, except on those that receive it and you can bet they will find every loop hole to avoid taxes on that.

Didn't you hear Obama?

It was immoral, greedy, imperialistic and a bunch of other words, but it was not illegal, because
Phil Graham - Bush's fellow Texan and John McCain's economist - the one what claimed
the recession was just in our heads, authored the legislation to make the greed legal.

Cheney has zero credibility. If Cheney and Obama were to have a face to face debate, Obama would turn Cheney into a giant pile of gelatinous cellulite.

What I find most striking is that it doesn't seem to matter where the President is or who is in his presence, I am left with the impression that President Obama is the smartest guy in the room. He is an intellectual sponge and seems to absorb information very quickly, he has an incredible ability see and hear dozens of points of view and cut through the BS to get from point A to point Z, and he seems to be able to do 10 things at one time and do them all with extraordinary competence.

Compare that to W who was distracted by bright lights, could not construct a coherent sentence, and couldn't even eat a pretzel and watch TV at the same time without nearly choking to death.

The GOP is scared to death of President Obama. They know that if he is even semi successful in guiding the economy to recovery and implementing his policies, the Republicans will be left wondering in the wilderness for decades to come. As their right wing religious coalition disintegrates and now their deregulated big business agenda had been exposed, they have been left with even a smaller base and fewer Americans to dupe and mislead.

I was born and raised in Idaho. I tried going back home for a few years back in the 80's. Finally couldn't stand it and left.

When I left the state to go to grad school back in the late 60's, I was shocked to discover that everyone didn't think alike. I thought I was the only person in the world that felt weird about that war in southeast asia until I escaped to Oregon. The pioneers that built the state were a great bunch of people. Farmers and ranchers elected Frank Church to the Senate. Somehow it got pretty screwed up, starting in the 60's.
