Michael Cera is adorable and all, and I can't wait for the AD movie, but he is in for a surprise in a few years when he has aged beyond the befuddled innocent thing. I think he might want to spend some time, um, honing his craft.

Arrested Development will be a MILLION times better than this!

This won't be as ridiculous as religion itself.

As Mencken said, "nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public", so this should be a blockbuster. Anti-religious material is so avant-garde these days, so cutting edge daring-especially if it involves the symbols of Christianity.
Hollywood has become a desperate race to the finish with the collective attention span of the nation, its dying cultural literacy and aesthetic taste. Hollywood humor is cheap and repetitive stunts, bodily functions, scatalogy, and, in the anti-religious genre, the demolishing of straw men before an audience of raving cultural pre-adolescents.

There is a formula:
Religion is funny.
Funny usually works well in comedies.

... and Mencken had a great sense of humor, if the movie turns out to be good, it sounds like something he might have enjoyed.

Yeah, Mencken had a great sense of humor, but he could actually articulate that through the written word-he did lampoon religion as a Voltaireian, not as a vulgarian. That makes a tremendous amount of difference.

Yeah. You're right.

And come to think of it, the farting scene in Blazing Saddles sort of loses its punch after you've seen it 47 times.

So Hollywood = bad. Benny Hill = good?

Except Mencken said, "nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public." You're sure welcome to your fantasies and mythology, but there is nothing intelligent about religion. It requires a lack of intelligence and something called faith to believe in it.

I'm tired of Michael Cera's one note performances. I'll take a pass.

Not to mention Jack Black's one-trick-pony acting.

Lame but funny (if you like slapstick with an anti-religious flavor) ... should do well on late night cabal TV.

. . . and Jesus said, "Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone"

A rock flies out and strikes the woman dead.

Jesus says, "Aaaawww, MOM!"

Loved Jack Black in King Kong, also Eden Riegel is in it. Love her in All My Children. sounds like a winner.

This looks as though it will be as blasphemous as that anti Proposition 8 musical parody.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:28 PM on 03/21/2009

Then don't watch it. I'm sure they don't need your approval.

Setting something in biblical times and lampooning it (the Cain and Abel story) does not make it automatically blasphemous. When will people stop being so self-righteous?

Well, if the consensus of opinion is that this is such a bad movie, why is Judd Apatow so popular??

While I don't really know who Judd Apatow is, and therefore cannot offer an informed opinion as to his abilities. I can answer your question in a general sense...

"Popular" does not now, nor has it ever, necessarily (key word) equaled "good". If you do opt for the Popular = Good equation without question, you must be prepared to take the good with the bad.

Ever read up on the Philistines? They were pretty cool; they got a bad rap from the Israe.lites for being pag.an.
