File photo dated Feb. 19 2009 of Jade Goody leaving her home in a wheelchair in Upshire, England. Jade Goody, a dental assistant turned reality-TV star whose whirlwind journey from poverty to celebrity to tragedy became a national soap opera and morality tale in Britain, has died. The 27-year-old had cancer and died in her sleep early Sunday March 22 2009 at her home, her publicist Max Clifford said. Goody gained fame at 21 in 2002, when she joined the reality television show "Big Brother," in which contestants live together for weeks and are constantly filmed. Loud and brash, she became a highly divisive star _ initially mocked as an ignorant slob, then celebrated as a forthright everywoman by a hungry tabloid press. LONDON — Jade Goody's family asks for "privacy at last" after the death at 27 of the brash former dental assistant who turned her tumultuous life and struggle with cervical cancer into a one-woman reality show.

Mocked as a slob, then celebrated as an everywoman, Goody lived one of the world's most public lives, with cameras capturing everything from her racial slurs to her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy. Publicist Max Clifford said Goody died in her sleep at home in Upshire, southeast England, early Sunday.

Goody gained fame in 2002 at age 21 when she joined the British version of the reality television show "Big Brother," in which contestants live together for weeks and are constantly filmed. She became a highly divisive star and something of a national touchstone who sparked debate about race, class and celebrity.

During filming of an Indian version of "Celebrity Big Brother" in the summer of 2008, Goody received a diagnosis of cervical cancer by telephone from a doctor in Britain. The camera captured the deeply personal moment, which was shown repeatedly on TV.

The progress of her illness was chronicled in detail in the tabloid press and weekly magazines. She underwent surgery and chemotherapy in the public eye _ filming part of the experience.

The Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams, who heads the Church of England, said Goody showed a brave side in the face of death.

"If in her earlier career it was all about her, then I think at the end it was about something else," Williams said.

Bald and frail, Goody married fiancee Jack Tweed last month in an elaborate event staged at an elegant countryside hotel outside London. The wedding was shown on television and the photos were sold, prompting criticism.

But Goody, who grew up in a poor London neighborhood, defended herself _ saying she wanted her two young sons to have a better life than she had. Goody's father was a heroin addict who served jail time for robbery and died in 2005; her mother was a former crack addict who lost the use of an arm in a motorcycle accident.

"People will say I'm doing this for money," she said. "And they're right, I am. But not to buy flash cars or big houses _ it's for my sons' future if I'm not here. I don't want my kids to have the same miserable, drug-blighted, poverty-stricken childhood I did."

Goody's publicist said last month that the cancer had spread to her liver, bowel and groin.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Sunday that Goody used her fame to help others.

"She was a courageous woman both in life and death, and the whole country have admired her determination to provide a bright future for her children," Brown said. He also praised her for her efforts, after her diagnosis, to raise awareness about cervical cancer and the need for screening.

Though many praised Goody in recent months for the way in which she handled her illness, she was often mocked in the press during her stint on "Big Brother" for her weight, her big mouth and her apparent lack of general knowledge. She branded the English region of East Anglia "East Angular," and asked whether it was abroad.

She didn't win the show, but she earned millions through television and magazine appearances, an autobiography, a perfume and a series of exercise videos.

Goody was labeled a racist bully for her treatment of another contestant, Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty, while filming the British version of "Celebrity Big Brother" in 2007. Goody bad-mouthed Shetty's cooking of Indian food, mocked her accent and referred to her as "Shilpa Poppadom." While complaints against the show skyrocketed, so did ratings.

Goody's treatment of Shetty sparked anger in India and Britain _ even becoming the topic of debate during a House of Commons question-and-answer session with then Prime Minister Tony Blair. A major sponsor suspended its advertising deal with "Celebrity Big Brother," and a chain of perfume shops pulled a Goody-endorsed fragrance, ironically named "Shh..."

After television viewers voted to evict Goody from the show, Goody _ herself of mixed race _ insisted she wasn't a racist. "I argue like that with everybody. It wasn't just because of the color of her skin that I was that aggressive," she said during an interview on Britain's GMTV.

Shetty and Goody eventually reconciled. On Sunday, Shetty told the BBC, "I am deeply saddened, but I am glad Jade is out of pain and that she died peacefully with her family around her."

After Goody was evicted from the "Celebrity Big Brother" house, the Indian Tourism Office invited Goody to travel to the country. She did, visiting charity projects and later agreeing to appear on the Indian reality show.

"The people of India have only seen a small part of me, and I'd like to show them that there is more to me," Goody said. "I'm a mother of two, a businesswoman. I can't be all that bad."

Goody is survived by Tweed and her two sons, Bobby and Freddie, with an ex-boyfriend, television presenter Jeff Brazier. She also is survived by her mother, Jackiey Budden.

Budden told reporters Sunday: "Family and friends would like privacy at last."

She did for Ovarian Cancer what Lance Armstrong did for Testicular Cancer....increased awareness and removed the stigma that often comes along with any cancer diagnosis.

PLEASE make sure to care for yourself and your family....get regular check-ups and screenings, enroll in low (or no) cost health plans if you are uninsured. EVERY state has some agency that can allow you access to care! Start with your state's department of health and human services and they can lead you in the right direction.

From a little nurse in Denver to all of you...PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE take care of yourself. It's never too late to start!

it cant be said enough. Pap tests are so important for women. If caught in the pre-cancer stage, this cancer is totally curable.

I think this story of Jade Goody truly is a tragedy. My heart goes out two her two little boys. Life in this world is hard enough to sustain, now even harder without their mother. Despite the scrutiny that the public has displayed towards Jade Goody. I commend her for living her life to the fullest until she could no longer live, and for securing her children's future financially. She was a smart woman. Most people don't realize that when you do reality television, you have to act crazy and do stupid things. This is the only way that you will be able to catch your audiences attention. I think she was always a very level headed woman, that knew how to capitalize on public exposure for her personal gain. It is unfortunate that her life ended at such a young age. For those of us who are left behind with her story, should learn that life should be lived as if it were your last day. My condolences to Jade's family and friends. I am very sorry for your loss.

Each man's death diminishes a part of me, for I am a part of mankind.

Rest in peace, comfort to her family.

As a cancer survivor, I am very proud of Jade. Living life in the spotlight brings the spotlight on her prognosis. That's called AWARENESS and is a very important part of making sure the rest of us get our screenings.

We all choose to bring the spotlight to cancer in our own way. Personally, I co-founded a non-profit organization called Rockin' for a Reason four years ago (I will be 6 years cancer free in May) that puts on a "party for a purpose" once a year called Rocktoberfest. We raise money for two breast cancer charities and awareness to all ages.

Early detection is the key in the fight against any cancer and only awareness of the available and necessary screenings will guarantee that. Trust me, celebrity helps awareness tremendously!!

So much judgment.

It's ridiculous. When you are faced with this, and I am a cancer patient with a not-so-bright-prognosis, you do the best you can with what you have.

Hospice is all about choice.

What I cant understand is all the criticism. Walk a mile...

Like many tragic heroines, she became more beautiful as she got sicker. There's one picture of her walking on a beach with one of her kids, a floppy bathing cap covering her hair loss, where she looked happy and glowing. It was only a few weeks ago.

Made for tv and infotainment indeed. It makes me sad and angry to see death and dying "staged" in this way but that was her life it seems.

I feel sorry for her sons and only hope their father will do a better job. Now everyone, including her manager, can sit back and enjoy the money they've made from this sad charade that has been milked to very pound.

There is something off her, you?

She did what she thought was right to secure the future of her children, that is more than what most do while they are alive.

Jade will RIP knowing she did her best, even if some find it offensive; I am not one of them.

Staged??? Or brought to the forefront. I think anyone who would do this and give people a glimpse at true "reality" for miillions of families worldwide is couragious. She brought to the forefront a tragic reality of cervical cancer and hopefully a new awareness of the need for research and cures, statically "womens" cancers have had less research monies, hopefully this will change that.

As I log into British Newspapers everday, I have watched this saga untI must say I feel very angry about the hype. Yes, I'm sorry that she has died at a young age, but, the media circus going with her death has been awful. I realize she wanted money for her young sons, but, I will bet that this continues. I hope someone (not in her family or publicist) is watching out for her sons inheritance because I'm not sure that it will be as she might have hoped. As for a previous poster Hospices are wonderful, they give people a very dignified way to die, something Jade Goody did not have.

But, Jade also succeeded in bringing awareness to many people. I'd be willing to bet there are many women worldwide who will make sure not to miss their next pap.

I wholehartedly agree with you as far as the awareness goes, but it was pathetic how they made this woman front page news on a daily basis just because she was dying of cancer.. My grandpa died of cancer last year, and he did it within the peace of his family.
