Striking French workers for US manufacturer 3M were holding their boss hostage today at a plant south of Paris as anger over layoffs and cutbacks mounted around the country.

A few dozen strikers took turns standing guard outside factory offices where the director of 3M's French operations, Luc Rousselet, has been holed up since yesterday. The workers did not threaten any violence and the atmosphere was calm at the factory on the outskirts of Pithiviers.

A few police officers stood outside the facility, while workers inside exchanged jokes and worries about their future amid heaps of empty plastic coffee cups and boxes of cookies.

Talks among 3M workers and management were suspended overnight, but were to resume later Wednesday mediated by a local labor official. Workers want better severance packages for those being laid off and better conditions for those keeping their jobs.

Meanwhile, workers from a French plant owned by German tire maker Continental AG marched through Paris and burned tires Wednesday near the president's Elysee palace to protest against their factory's planned closure.

Faced with what it calls the collapse of the European auto market, Continental recently announced plans to close the plant in 2010.

"We shouldn't let this company close down, otherwise it means that all these robber bosses can do whatever they want to," said Antonio Da Costa, a union representative.

In France, it is not unheard-of for striking workers to hold company executives as a way of winning concessions from management. The hostages are almost never injured. A similar situation ended peacefully earlier this month at Sony's French facilities.

"We don't have any other ammunition" other than hostage-taking, said Laurent Joly, who has worked at the Pithiviers plant for 11 years and is angry that he is being transferred to another French site.

"I really have the impression that we no longer exist for these people," Genevieve Camus, who has worked for the plant for 35 years, said of the company's US management.

The French division of 3M -- a diversified US manufacturer known for Post-It notes and Scotch tape -- recently announced layoffs and job transfers among its 2,700 workers at 13 French sites. Among those targeted are 110 of the Pithiviers factory's 235 workers.

The Maplewood, Minnesota-based 3M is also planning job cuts at facilities in the United States and other developed nations.

The 3M workers have been on strike since Friday. Hamon said Rousselet was blocked from leaving the factory Tuesday after arriving from 3M France headquarters near Paris.

Store owners in Pithiviers were planning to shut early Wednesday to support the factory workers.

When Rousselet, the locked-up director, came out of the office to go to the bathroom, workers booed him while reporters asked him how he was holding up.

"Everything's fine," he said.

Workers planned to bring Rousselet mussels and french fries for dinner if he was still there tonight.

Reading this I don't think that it's any surprise that working conditions and job contracts in general are so mediocre in this country when compared to Europe. Americans should wake up and take notice.

French Revolution part deux?

For the citizens of France, I hope not.

When will the guillotines be taken out storage?

Pathetic, hostage taking, till they get what they want? Because the company can't afford them anymore, there going to hold someone hostage till they get what they want? Mob mentality rules as usual in the once great country of france.

Why won't american workers, here in the land of the "brave and the free", stand up to corporations?

Because our CORPORATE WELFARE QUEENS HIRE THE PINKERTONS to shoot workers... Started back in West Va in the 1800s when the Irish tried to organize before the Civil War..They were slaving on the Railroad....

Rockefeller who made a mint on the Ludlow Mines (wrote a book saying he never made a penny profit (sound familiar) hired the Pinkertons and in Chicago they had the police to kill the strikers....

France is different, really they give the guy mussels and fries....

What?

Talk about holding grudge. Did the pinkertons come after the striking air traffic controllers?

And you really think police (average citizen) would happily go out and kill strikers?

Because American workers bought into the American myth. Since they hold the belief (absolutely irrational for most of them) that they can become rich one day, they tend to identify with the rich to some extent.

Boy, that remark is so true. Why would any middle class person vote for a Republican. It's always boggled my mind! But then, why would anyone vote anymore. It doesn't seem to change things for the better.

Not sure how to feel about this one. Part of me things get laid off and going to jail is not the answer. Sure you get three hots and cot but I'd rather be free. Also wondering what would happen if they happened in US, would bosses think twice before their inflict their greed upon everyone?

Sounds like there is more management / worker interaction there than there is in the United States.

Looking at the French reaction to the sagging economy and layoffs one can't help but believe that there is just as much anger and frustration in this country. We are not as organized, there are fewer unions and the masses are not as well informed but the anger and disgust are simmering just below the surface. How is it that immigrants who are not even in this country legally can put together a march in the middle of a work week and have millions turn out in support? 70% of Americans are opposed to the war in Iraq and we all know that the working people are not responsible for the recession but we still sit on our asses with our mouths shut. I can guarantee you that the French government is listening to the people and we could force our government to listen as well. We had a successful revolution in this country once but now they would have you believe that revolution is a dirty word. The French have had a few revolutions over the years and they're not afraid to have one again. POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!

How does a strike put people back to work? They are being laid off because there is less demand for post-it notes. If no one is buying post-it notes, why should people be employed to make post-it notes?

Does this strike create demand for post-it notes? no.
Will these people be rehired to make post-it notes? no.

Where did you read there was less demand for anything? This is just another race to the bottom by corporations who don't give a darn about people.

that is stupid...How come, they buy tires in France and they want their own people to make the tires....Hightower has interesting stats on t-shirt and what the real difference is in the cost and it is not much, so then you have to wonder what else is going on....

Honestly do you really think it is cheap to transport all this stuff from CHINA,,,, imagine how much that costs? time for Tariffs, because otherwise our own workers are too scared to go on strike... You will be fired no doubt about it, you will have no health care... The French have healthcare, mass transportation, subsidized education, and 6 SIX weeks of vacation AND TAX CREDITS for the commute to work if you cannot use mass transportation...Who gets tax breaks for TRAVEL IN THIS COUNTRY... THE CORPORATE WELFARE QUEENS, not us working slobs.....

You gotta love the French, although, when they clog up the highways with their protests and you can not move it is another story altogether . Anyway, I often wondered why the people in this country are not rioting in the streets as they did in the sixties and seventies. I grew up in Europe at that time and admired the students in the US for their protest and critical thinking...
Well, these students are grandparents now, and somehow someone forgot to teach the kids and grandkids, and the education system has done everything possible not to turn out critical thinkers. Just look at the washed down literature they have the kids read... might as well give them cliff notes.
Anyway, if there are any grandparents out there who still have the juice left, they should start to organize for the sake of their children and grandchildren. After all, they allowed this country to become what it is.....the great babyboomers who are now enjoying retirement. (Or not, thanks to Madoff and friends)

Simplist answer is that the new younger generations were sold into materialism and did not want to stray from it. The concepts of giving up part of your life for the greater good doesn't resinate as clearly as it used to. When I was eighteen, all I wanted was an education and not to go to Vietnam. Today it seems that eighteen year olds want to have everything that their folks took twenty years to gain, but instead of waiting 20 years, they want it now. It's hard to get people to march when they're consumed by their toys.
