Freedom Tower

New York Post:

Freedom is so passe at Ground Zero.

Once hailed as a beacon of rebirth in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terror attacks, the Freedom Tower's patriotic name has been swapped out for the more marketable One World Trade Center, officials at the Port Authority conceded today.

The notion that we're the most powerful nation in the world is antiquated...or fabricated from the beginning, depending on your point of view. We're powerful, alright, at unilaterally force-feeding our interests and will on other countries, either overtly or covertly. But when it comes to initiative, imagination, and abilities to get things done, we're worst than 3rd world. All we do is stand around and argue about it via litigation. Seven years, and counting, later all we have to show for it is a big hole w/ a bunch of construction equipment calling itself home of the future "Freedom Tower". "Freedom Tower"...boy, that takes imagination.

Whoa - a sure sign of bad economic times, It wasn't re-branded

" The (insert Corporate Name here) Freedom Towers of One World Trade Avenue ".

Wasn't it the Chinese firm Vantone who objected to the name? They will be the largest tenant in the building (6 floors).

Personally, I always thought the name was stupid and jingoistic. But I'm annoyed that when Big Business does something like this, it's just being practical. But when I say "freedom fries" are idiotic, I hate America.

Many people want the original twin towers rebuilt taller, safer, stronger, but can the cost of such a project be justified? The Towers that fell did not have full occupancy until the 90's, they lost money for 25 years, needing special considerations from the city. I frankly never liked them, the Towers reminded me of a alien robot B Si-Fi movie I saw when I was a kid and never saw again, they looked just like this killer robot. I got used to them, like everyone else and they were properly the most photographed buildings in the world because of how they reflected light, maybe it's time for something new and more architecturally pleasing.

If the f**ker bush were still pres, once getting wind of the name change "Freedom Tower" to whatever, he'd make a "Terri Schiavoish" rush to NYC to stand "at the gates" of the Freedom Tower to prevent anyone from changing the name. He'd be joined by "brothers in arms", Tom Delay, Bill Frist, James Dobson, and Pat Robertson.

The PR agency and think tank names that were generated during the Bush error, freedom this and that, Homeland Security, Patriot Act etc. sound ominously fascist to me and should go away.

...our current Pres. is working on it (extricating these silly names and, in general, jingoism from our national psyche).

You are a very angry person, I would seek help for that. This is not about politics, it's about a memorial for all the people who died and what our country is about, freedom.

P.S. he is not still pres, so get over your obsession with him, it's kinda creepy

Ahhhh, this is about GWB isn't it? Yet you try to shroud it in giving a sh*t about what this tower is called. Your transparency is mind-numbing

Freedom Tower sounds too much like something that George W Bush decided to call it.

The name is, likely, the result of a year-long, silly campaign solicitation for good names resulting in those who chose the name picking the most obviously stupid, insipid name possible "The Freedom Tower". WHoever came up with that winner was, and probably still is, a bush disciple to the f**king core.

I agree, the Bush Administration soiled the word freedom by using it in all the wrong ways. They even changed french fries to the new name freedom fries in government cafeterias because of France's criticisim of the invasion of Iraq. The fundamentalist extremists didn't attack us on 9/11 because they hate our freedom, it's much more complex than that. The Freedom Towers name on it's own was a nice thought, but I don't care for One World Trade Center. Something along the theme of Memorial Towers would be a better name and a fitting tribute to those lost on that fateful day.

One World Trade Center is a more marketable name? Why not call it the Hurricane Katrina Tower, or The Pan AM 103 Building, or Pearl Harbor. The name Freedom Tower stinks too. How about something organic and real and less an invitation to bad guys to try it again.
