Senator McCain: Sarah Palin just energized a base that would have voted for you anyway, perhaps with not much enthusiasm. But, a vote is a vote. Palin, certainly, did not attract any moderate and/or independent voters with her outdated political ideology and her lack of general knowledge. What could have been frightening than her being a heartbeat away from the Presidency? Her selection as your VP candidate was your mis-calculation. Because of your Palin selection, I have several progressive Republican friends who voted for President Obama, or who just chose not to vote.

If those votes for McCain were really for Palin, then she lost big time, didn't she? And she won't have a shot in **heck** running against Obama in 2012. She lacks the intelligence and fortitude. She runs and hides now when things get tough. And Todd as first husband? What a scary thought having this family in the White House. The Beverly Hillbillies running the country. God help us all if this country turns in that direction. It will be the end of the USA.

I think we just had 8 years of the Beverly Hillbillies (although Jed was a lot more intelligent and sagacious than W....Maybe G.H.W. was Jed and W. was Jethro...). A Palin White House would probably be something between "The Beverly Hillbillies", "The Addams Family", and "Thirty Days of Night".

Check this out and you'll see what I mean (courtesy of most excellent HuffPost blogger, Bruce Wilson):

By my analysis (and I'm a pretty good---and OLD---statistician) approximately 20% of registered voters would have voted for a Palin/McCain ticket vice the 46% that the McCain/Palin ticket garnered.

Her/their minions are, however, growing, not shrinking.

Twenty-percent is a lot of voters. Either they haven't read Bruce's work, don't believe it's true and aren't interested in finding out (i.e. don't care), or stand fervently behind her in her quest.

Maybe true John but way more people voted against Sarah Palin including some Evangelical Christian friends of mine who never voted Democrat in their lives. She scared them.

Mostly the people who voted R voted either for Palin or against Obama.
Many people would have voted a McCain ticket if only Palin were not on it.
That is the part they won't acknowledge. she unified one part of the party and at the same time pushed the rest out of the tent.

Go Sarah! Keep up the great work and also to all the mavericking and stuff.

Currently on a computer with a harddrive that is (shall we say) challenged... to go to the article would take all day :), so I am basing my common strictly on the above caption, along with a teaspoon of common sense.

I'd suggest this is a smoke screen, nothing more. Did Palin excite the BASE? Absolutely. There can be no question of that however I'd guesstimate that for every vote for the GOP because of Sarah, he lost two, either because (a) the Republican in question wanted change and preferred President Obama, or (b), wanted to vote for McCain but could not do so specifically BECAUSE of Palin. Let's face it - she was polarizing, either one way, or the other.

The GOP still thinks we are stupid. They're slow on the learning curve. More and more their support is dwindling, being marginalized, yet they fail/refuse to acknowledge that as a result of the regionalization of their party, more and more Americans are no longer relying on rhetoric fed to them by the Boss Limbaugh's and O'Reilly's of that fringe crowd. McCain's campaign strategists, however, surely know exactly what effect Sarah Palin as prospective V-P had on the electorate. They had inside polling. McCain now stating the opposite is either because he considers it less damaging on his ego to say she was an asset, or else he is touting the party line in advance of her run in 2012.

Steve: Love your comment - McCain lost votes because of that woman - most of his people voted for him and not Palin.
