NEW YORK — The New York Times Co. is cutting pay for most employees by 5 percent for a nine-month period and laying off 100 people.

The company's flagship newspaper reported on its Web site Thursday that the cuts will hit most nonunion workers and run from April through December. Employees will receive 10 days off in return.

The Times reported that union employees have been asked to take the cut voluntarily to avoid potential layoffs at the company, which has been struggling with an industrywide advertising downturn.

Job cuts will come in the business operations of The New York Times, amounting to 5 percent of the total 2,000 workers in that part of the company.

Hopefully the Times and other papers will weather this. Perhaps Paul Krugman can think of something.

When the newspaper industry dies it will be a sad day for America. Not only will we loss investigative journalism, but local news as well. Don't judge the industry on a few of the giants. There will also be a loss of skilled jobs, from graphic designers, layout specialist, lithographers, tool and die makers, machinist, and photo journalist.
There will also be a loss of semi-skilled jobs from prepress and post press, inserters, bindery operators, loaders and deliverers. Print is one of the few industries left in this country for tradesmen.

For those that believe we are emerging into a new era in which the internet supplants paper media and that is good you are grossly mistaken. Very few of the internet's so called news outlets actually report the news, mostly they are opinionated diatribes offering only one side of a story or one political view. Investigative journalism just doesn't exists online, what does exists is venting and slanderous accusations. Until we see the likes of a Chet Huntley, David Brinkley, Howard Cosell, Walter Cronkite or a Sam Donaldson, journalist who didn't use the freedom of the press to slander, but understood fairness, honesty and integrity in reporting the internet will not come of age. Some day maybe, but that time is not now.

If they were a little more centrist, they might sell a few more papers.

Bravo!
With all the misreporting, nonreporting, rubber stamp reporting of the last eight years, I hope all the MSM goes flat broke! I hope all these over paid liars on the socalled TV news and all the other corporate owned and operated liars fold, go broke and we never have to be bothered with them again. It is truely a sick thing to try and get information in America today. The closest I can equate it to is the old USSR.
If all these socalled MSM fail it will be a wonderful day for our country. At least then there will be some chance to start an honest news outlet with real reporters and not over paid liars!

And how will any paper start up when there's no one there to support it? Will you buy a subscription to a new paper, or will you just read it all online now?

I worked for a newspaper publishing company last year and they are tanking hard too with pay cuts, lay-offs and the like.

It is like living in the early 20th century went people started to see the end of horse drawn carraiges as the rule of transportation to cars.
Newspapers will be damn near exclusively online in a couple of decades...

Decades....try years. Most of the stuff in print anymore is yesterdays online news. I pray for the day the LAtimes go down. They are dying on the vine.

There don't seem to be any posters here who have the slightest understanding of the difference between the news pages and the opinion page of the New York Times. Everyone who has posted here is thrilled to destroy the entire NYT because the opinions of the columnists on that one page are not in 100% agreement with each uninformed, biased opinion expressed here.
I have never seen so many distasteful comments posted in one story. Without the New York Times there is no longer a paper of record in America. You should all be ashamed of your narrow minded selves.

They all came out in ONE united, loud voice on T.V.
They used T.V. to shine a big spotlight on their false outrage.
It went BOOM on Obama on top of everything else he's dealing with.
This was a drummed-up hype-fest to poke-the-eye of Obama to sell papers.
Just what America needs right now. More false outrage.

The problem is that the NYT is the paper of record. Its a joke that gave up any journalistic integrity years ago. Its not just the opinion writers who are bad. The editors an reporters are biased hacks. Sadly Jayson Blair isnt the worst the times has had to offer over the years.

Good riddance.

Was Judith Miller's reporting merely opinion? That makes much more sense, but I don't quite know why we invaded Iraq based on opinion?

Not only is the NYT obsolete, they should all be tried for war crimes for what has happened to Iraq and its people. Without NYT cheerleading I'm not sure public and congress support would have been high enough to pull it off.

Yes, War Crimes. What has been done in the name of Americans is criminal.
