NEW YORK — The New York Times Co. is cutting pay for most employees by 5 percent for a nine-month period and laying off 100 people.

The company's flagship newspaper reported on its Web site Thursday that the cuts will hit most nonunion workers and run from April through December. Employees will receive 10 days off in return.

The Times reported that union employees have been asked to take the cut voluntarily to avoid potential layoffs at the company, which has been struggling with an industrywide advertising downturn.

Job cuts will come in the business operations of The New York Times, amounting to 5 percent of the total 2,000 workers in that part of the company.

Those high-powered national reporters and columnists all have contracts, so they are not affected by this cut.

I don't care if they fold. I only care about NPR.

I stopped listening to NPR when it was clear that threw objectivity out the door and simply regurgitated the same feces we were hearing in the corporate media during the Bush Regime's occupation of our presidency. Only William Krystol does it better than Steve Innskeep.

Terry Gross is the only exception in my view.

The way NYT staff is paid, 5 percent is nothing to them. If it were the vast majority of reporters out in the small dailies of the country, the ones whose reporters far outnumber those in the great city papers, we told to take a 5 percent cut, you'd see thousands of families seeking food stamps and free school lunches.

As far as I'm concerned MoDo, Rich, Krugman, et al, can start eating lunch at BK and Mickey D's like the rest of us.

I only have one question. Is the top brass at the paper taking a pay cut? I doubt it.

What do you do for a living? What if you were losing your job?

All this is real funny until your company is the one going under.

Excellent news and a very good start. NYT's propaganda Boston Globe is next on the chopping block followed by the Washington Post... I hope.

Really, the "gray lady" has practically never ever provided honest journalism. Lies and propaganda have been its primary product ever since Arthur Sultzberger Jr's great grandson bought the NYT in 1896.

All one has to do is pore through the online archives of the so called articles of journalism spewed out by this rag which covered "news" items of WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnamese War, two Iraq wars as well as any article about Issy rael to understand that this paper has been engaged in lies from 1914 to this very day.

NYT charges for this service, but most libraries have free online access. Compare all the lies published by the NYT in the run up to these wars compared to what was later known as fact and you will see that this paper has always published primarily lies and propaganda.

Thank god for the Internet and blogs!

DON't RIP NYT.

Dear DNC,

Don't bail these companies out too. We know it's just for political endorsements and favoritism. Let the old business models die.
