NEW YORK — The New York Times Co. is cutting pay for most employees by 5 percent for a nine-month period and laying off 100 people.

The company's flagship newspaper reported on its Web site Thursday that the cuts will hit most nonunion workers and run from April through December. Employees will receive 10 days off in return.

The Times reported that union employees have been asked to take the cut voluntarily to avoid potential layoffs at the company, which has been struggling with an industrywide advertising downturn.

Job cuts will come in the business operations of The New York Times, amounting to 5 percent of the total 2,000 workers in that part of the company.

So are management and the executives also taking a pay cut? Sounded like it was just the worker bees -- but what's new?!

So, like, can I go into a grocery store and just cut the prices by 5%?

I can't wait till this is a one newspaper town. Long live the Wall Street Journal. I'm proud to say that by canceling my subscription to the NYT, I contributed to this.

you'd rather support rupert murdoch, who's australian and owns the new york post and fox news network? rupert murdoch, who slash and burn companies he grabs with no concern to the local workers if only to make him richer? rupert murdoch, who'd rather go down the dregs of sensationalism just to keep his paper and station afloat?

well, dude, you can have your wall street journal anytime. i'd keep my new york times.

The conservatives hate the New York Times because they don't like to read about what is really going on.
The liberals don't like the New York Times because Judith Miller wrote a pro-Iraq column years ago.

I'm going to miss newspapers.

I prefer the Financial Times for legitimate financial analysis. It used to be WSJ until Murdoch laid his tentacles on it. As for the NYT it has fallen in terms of journalistic integrity trying to play both ends from the middle.

This is what happens when supposedly objective media are shown to be completely unobjective and in the tank for a minority viewpoint. Good riddance!

Not every columnist is top notch all the time; but many of those, excluding the war mongers, at NY Times are patriotic, insightful, courageous, and they have done a great service to this country. We own thanks to them and should think of ways to help them help us better see the truth in this trying time. Go Frank Rich!

Please say Maureen Dowd is one of them.
