well Michelle O should not dress for blue eyes, she is AFRICAN and should dress as she see fit. The issue with the previous first couples except for the Kennedy's but especially republicans is that they love to ACT. The GOP and their followers from Fix News to hillbillies ignoramous is that they talk a good game, but can't walk the walk. Michelle, like her Husband and others across this land believe in truth, spirituality and the American way of life. The GOP love to scream patriotism, but it is the GOP patriotism that created this American dispair we are living and that has created havoc across the world. The Audacity of REPUBLICAN GREED. Michelle OBAMA and President O is awesome and like I dealt with in the Army, many bigoted whites love to tell blacks, hispanics or others that we are "too ambitious", but it is because they know we are more capable than what they do. They are good at cooking the books and telling lies, "blue eye devils wrecked the worlds economy"!

She's a great choice. The First Lady is fiercely determined, family- and community-oriented person. And, like her husband, she excelled in the academic arena. A great choice indeed.

I can't believe folks are complaining about Michelle giving commencement speeches. Don't recall too many people complaining when Laura Bush did anything. Double standard eh??

Of course, there is no reason that MO should not give commencement speeches. She would be a terrific asset to any graudation (except, perhaps, Pat Robertson's Liberty College :-) )

THe Obamas have often including school kids in functions and activities. It seems a natural for them.

Laura Bush was appropriate, as well. She did a lot with kids, and was a teacher herself.

Heads up to anyone getting a commencement speaker: Do NOT get Paul Volker, he might have been a great choice in 1984, but his time has long since passed.

Seriously, what is wrong with American politics. She might be doing the good work, she might have the great ideas, she might be full of excellent character values but she wasn't elected to office. She has no elected privilege of addressing the public as part of the government. This is really wrong, it is making royalty out of democratically elected representatives. First lady, the title is just so wrong, so undemocratic, that somehow leadership simply accrues through familial relationships is the antithesis of democracy. She has to earn her place on the public stage, through her deeds not just marry into it.

Good grief. She has to earn her place on the public stage?

You are really wrong in your backwoods thinking. These are commencement addresses not political speeches. She is the 'First Lady' of the United States and she can do pretty much as she damn well please.

Blah Blah Blah, these students at this University lobbied to get the first lady at their institution and how happy they must feel that she heard them and agreed to speak. Last time I checked you did not have to be able to be a elected official to speak in public.

I would have loved to have her speak at my last graduation instead oh the guy who got up there and for half his speech quoted The Greatest Love of All by Whitney Houston.

Is this a serious comment...? Since when do you have to be elected to Government Office to give a commencement speech at a graduation??? A commencement speech is typically given by a notable figure in the community. A lot of celebrities have been invited to give them at their Alma Mater's. Mechelle LaVaughn Obama is the First lady of the United States which is notable in my opinion. Get over yourself already!!! Did you say the same thing about former First ladies...? Or is it just this particular First Lady that has your knickers in a knot???

rtb61,
Oooooooh, so sorry, so one has to be elected to foffice to speak at graduation ceremonies now; wow, I missed the memo on that one. Please, rtb61, keeper of DC protocol, procedures & etiquette, please forward to the rest of us who were so unfortunate enough to have not seen it.

She is especially a role model for girls who might otherwise think of themselves as lesser beings. She is not a lesser being.

And Notre Dame so there. You are not the only University around. Guess that minority spending there is not used very often. Hey football and basketball seekers--go to UNC system -don't waste time at with the Fighting Irish.

And those sorry excuses about religious ethics and concerns-crap! They should enjoy a challenge and debate if they are so strong in their beliefs. So, maybe they are not secure in their stand.

At any rate Move on-more important fish on the table.
