MILTON, Mass. — A man fatally stabbed his 17-year-old sister, decapitated his 5-year-old sister in front of a police officer and then turned toward his 9-year-old sister with a knife in his hand before officers shot him dead in what their chief described as "a killing field."

There was no clear motive for the events that unfolded Saturday, the day after the 5-year-old's birthday, in a tony Boston suburb that also is home to Gov. Deval Patrick. But there was no doubt about the carnage wrought by 23-year-old Kerby Revelus against his sisters in the two-family home they shared with their parents and grandmother.

Five-year-old Bianca was killed as a cake for her birthday, which investigators believe was Friday, sat on the kitchen table. Nine-year-old Sarafina dialed 911 and watched police shoot her brother as her elder sister, 17-year-old Samantha, lay dead on the floor.

Sarafina was hospitalized Sunday with defensive wounds to her hands and stab wounds in her abdomen and one of her legs, police said.

"In policing, we see the raw human emotion every day, but to think that a human being could afflict such an atrocious, violent act on his own family is unbelievable," Milton police Chief Richard G. Wells Jr. said. "When I walked up to the first officer (on the scene), I could see the whole story right in his face. This just told me that this was something very bad."

Saturday's attack came about 24 hours after Revelus had gotten into a fistfight with a man living next door, Wells said.

"Blows were exchanged," he said. "I don't know the cause of it, but we're confident that did happen. He had been agitated in the hours that followed that, going into the day and last night."

Investigators believe Revelus targeted Samantha, a senior at Milton High School, and fatally stabbed her with a household knife while their grandmother, who neighbors say lives on the first floor, was doing laundry in the basement. The children's parents were away; their mother, identified by friends as Regine Revelus, is a nurse at a Boston hospital, Wells said.

Sarafina, a student at the Tucker Elementary School, just behind the house, called 911 around 5 p.m. An officer on patrol in the neighborhood arrived within a minute, Wells said, and could hear an altercation inside as he reached the second floor. The 911 operator tried to persuade Sarafina to open the door, but when she didn't the officer broke through.

"As the officer entered the door, (Revelus) decapitated (Bianca) in front of him," Wells said. "He actually walked into a killing field. He walked into such carnage, as far as the atrocity of it, I've never seen it."

Within moments, four officers were inside and two of them shot Revelus as he tried to get to Sarafina, Wells said. Revelus fell, still clutching the knife.

Details about the number of shots and who killed Revelus were pending the outcome of an autopsy Sunday.

Revelus had recently served jail time on a gun charge, Wells said, but the details would not be released until courts opened Monday. Neighbors said Revelus was in a car that was pulled over by police and from which one occupant threw a gun into a sewer.

Police had been called to the family's house in 2004 after a domestic violence report that Revelus had punched a woman living there, Wells said.

A neighbor, Norm Walsh, said his daughter Kate Walsh, a Hollis, N.H., police officer, reported hearing two shots as she went outside to bring in groceries from the family car. Moments later, a blood-covered officer emerged carrying Sarafina, seeking towels to stanch her bleeding.

"It's shocking to me," said Norm Walsh, whose son is the same age as Revelus. "He played a lot of pickup hoop in the driveway."

Walsh said the family members had lived in the neighborhood for more than 20 years and were warm. They were of Haitian descent, as are many residents in the neighborhood, where Creole is spoken alongside English.

"The family is a solid family. Both parents worked; good kids. Completely makes no sense," Walsh said.

Samantha's classmates referred to her by her nickname, Princess, and remarked at her grace, class and friendliness. She had been one of about 20 students who had been at the high school Saturday afternoon to rehearse for a poetry jam on Thursday. Saturday morning, Samantha also had practiced for a school fashion show.

"She had a stage presence like you couldn't believe," classmate Kassi Stein said.

Sobbing, she added: "She had just a soft voice and everyone would lean in to hear what she was saying."

In one of the poems Samantha was to recite, "Acquaintance," she wrote of the strength of women in the face of "ignorant souls."

The poem closed, "So what lousy wind brought you here? What values you offer? She's a woman, a queen, a goddess. Don't treat her like any other."

A two-hour grief counseling session was held at the school Sunday afternoon and will be offered Monday to students and employees.

The officers involved in the case were placed on administrative leave and were receiving counseling from the Boston Police Department.

An 18 year old boy in our neighborhood stabbed his mother to death and then attempted to kill his sister. He adored all his family but was schizophrenic and had been in a psychiatric hospital prior to the incident. The father was a police officer and had begged those responsible for his sons care not to release him from the hospital as he feared his son was so unwell he would harm either himself or someone else. After his release the boy took off and without supervision stopped taking his medication, returning to his families home one afternoon where the terrible incident took place.

I remember seeing the devastated father on television and he said the true horror was that his son would come to realize what he had done when his medication was reinstated by the doctors. He said he loved his son and did not hold him responsible for his actions but held the doctors and medical staff responsible for their unwillingness to listen to the family who recognized their sons potential for disaster.

That's a good point. Most schizophrenics start suffering their symptoms in their early 20's That might be what happened here.

You apparently know nothing about the disease schizophrenia.

It seems this person may have suffered from this illness to commit such a horrible crime to his own family.

My brother had it. We had several physical altercations where he accused me of things that didn't exist. He suffered from many delusional episodes where he believed everyone was his enemy. I feared for my family and my own safety when got hold of a gun though legally, I was still scared...especially when he was off his medication.
My brother died violently in 1994 at the age of 40 while he not taking his medication.

Your flagrant response shows a lack of understanding of this disease and what is can do to an entire family.

This disease is no joke and nothing to laugh about.

I pray that no one in your family or anyone close to you becomes inflicted with this horrible illness.

If the devil lives, he works for a health insurance company. Only in AMerica will citizens turn men who withhold care, meds and procedures into billionares.

This is a huge problem. These killings are senseless and avoidable. There is not adequate mental health awareness and treatment. As well, there is no support for the families even, as you say, when the family tries to seek help for a seriously ill member. I

Having a family member who is mentally ill, I can say that his condition has not improved over the years. Mental illness is a very difficult mystery to solve and even treatment does not guarantee a good outcome. It is a terrible thing to witness the suffering of the mentally ill.

The gun charge was mentioned.

I expect that the police officer that witnessed this tragedy will need counselling for some time. I know I would.

The true horror of this story is the complete underfunding of our state mental institutions.

But, hey, taking care of murderous whackos for their entire lives is too much like socialism, right? So let them all go free -- then we can all act shocked and horrified when crimes like this happen.

Excellent point. Sad and true.

What more can be said, but what a sickening, awful, depressing story.

Here in Quebec Canada we had the most severely mentally ill patients institutionalized before. About 15-20 years ago they forced most leave for "out patient treatment" to make way for "research". I say forced, because may patients didn't know any other home but the institution. In the time since that restructuring, we have had two shooting sprees in Colleges in one city(Montreal), more suicide murders, and way more homeless people begging on the street. There is less treatment and less support for patients and their families.

Yes- let them all go free! How else will we have room to keep the potheads incarcerated?

Horrific things like this never happen to innocent families out of the blue. Invariably the news media conjures up sympathetic pictures of the incident to fulfill their own needs and desires. But the real story often never comes to light. This kid sounds like a wild animal who had no supervision teaching or discipline of any kind. Obviously the 'parents' were ineffective in teaching proper behavior. Perhaps this kid was also allowed to watch sadistic violent movies and videos. Perhaps the parents themselves are sadistic and violent? We may never know but we should never be naive enough to think these things happen to families innocently out of the blue. There are always reasons and lots of warning signs. Interesting the number of super violent teenage murderers that have been in the news just within the last month. One can only wonder how much worse this may get.

They guy also could have suffered from mental illness and was not taking his medication.

MY brother was schizophrenic and this is the kind violence that people with this disease are capable of.

This sounds like the most logical explanation for such violent acts to ones own family.

Do most spoiled children behead their sister? I kinda think it might have something to do with no treatment for mental illness.

Violent movies...? Permissive parents? Wow- you REALLY are blaming the victims! Usually it's subtle. Have you NEVER heard of mental illness?
I guess babbling on about the 'guilt' of the parents here makes you feel safe though.
(but you're not)

I've got to hand it to you, that is probably the most ignorant comment I've ever seen on this or any other site.

Are you in any way qualified to evaluate a situation that involves mental illness? If not, do you have the sense to shut your mouth about things you clearly do not understand?

He probably never saw a mental health professional once, or it might have been apparent that he was bordering on a psychotic episode.
The few facts listed here seem to indicate a pattern of escalating criminal behavior and lately a propensity toward violence, but it seems like he snapped, and there was likely nothing that could have been done to prevent it at the moment.
It appears to be just sheer luck that police saved the last young girl by shooting him. However, I am not sure if saved is the right term to use for this unfortunate girl who will have to live with this nightmare for the rest of her life.

There was just a suicide murder family tragedy here in Santa Clara California. Children were murdered there too. I have the most compassion for Police Officers today who have to witness these senseless 21st century mayhem crimes. Overpopulation, open borders, drugs, gangs, corrupt politics, indifference, pharmaceutically drugged populace, these very conditions were not necessarily what law enforcement signed up for. 25 years ago and more the average police officer had nowhere near the carnage, senseless brutality associated with crime we have facing us in 2009. At least they had respect and love from the general public for their hard work back then. Bless the Police Officers who have to deal with these horrible horrible crimes brought on by so many new and unusual problems facing us these days.

More like provide them with comprehensive mental and emotional counseling and screen/root out any psychotic ones that prey upon innocent civilians, which is becoming an increasing trend.

The tragedy some of these officers visit on the innocent citizens they are sworn to protect is horrifying.

Once again as was stated by the retired Oakland Sgt who spoke for his fallen officers at the Memorial last week in Oakland. The standards, criticisms and prejudice heaped upon Police Officers serving the Public is a 100% perfection standard and innate prejudice that no other sector of society would stand for, be that gender discrimination, sexual discrimination, sexual orientaiton, race or any other. Somehow when you are a Police Officer you are expected to be "perfect," make "no" mistakes; and or be prejudiced against no matter who or where you go and are. They are human, for goodness sake; they make mistakes, like in all work forces. They protect and serve in these horrific times and they serve in a way that goes above and beyond the call of duty with no respect or back up from the majority of the populace. Bless the officers who have to show up at these kind of tragedies or at the tragedies that occur each day in East Oakland with gangs and drugs and weapons that have no place in civilized lives.

We'll probably be hearing soon that this young man has been exhibiting psychotic behavior for some time and that his relatives have been trying desperately to either get him some help or have law enforcement intervene, to no avail.

Society will sell you security, the insecurity they give away for free. For the record, this incident has received so much attention in the media because of how UNLIKELY it is to happen. This is likely to have a very traumatic effect on those involved.

This young man was definitely mentally ill. My daughter's best friend was shot to death, along with her mother by her mentally ill brother. The mother had been trying for years to get him help. One day he just snapped. There are signs but the afflicted oftentimes can't or won't get help.
