MILTON, Mass. — A man fatally stabbed his 17-year-old sister, decapitated his 5-year-old sister in front of a police officer and then turned toward his 9-year-old sister with a knife in his hand before officers shot him dead in what their chief described as "a killing field."

There was no clear motive for the events that unfolded Saturday, the day after the 5-year-old's birthday, in a tony Boston suburb that also is home to Gov. Deval Patrick. But there was no doubt about the carnage wrought by 23-year-old Kerby Revelus against his sisters in the two-family home they shared with their parents and grandmother.

Five-year-old Bianca was killed as a cake for her birthday, which investigators believe was Friday, sat on the kitchen table. Nine-year-old Sarafina dialed 911 and watched police shoot her brother as her elder sister, 17-year-old Samantha, lay dead on the floor.

Sarafina was hospitalized Sunday with defensive wounds to her hands and stab wounds in her abdomen and one of her legs, police said.

"In policing, we see the raw human emotion every day, but to think that a human being could afflict such an atrocious, violent act on his own family is unbelievable," Milton police Chief Richard G. Wells Jr. said. "When I walked up to the first officer (on the scene), I could see the whole story right in his face. This just told me that this was something very bad."

Saturday's attack came about 24 hours after Revelus had gotten into a fistfight with a man living next door, Wells said.

"Blows were exchanged," he said. "I don't know the cause of it, but we're confident that did happen. He had been agitated in the hours that followed that, going into the day and last night."

Investigators believe Revelus targeted Samantha, a senior at Milton High School, and fatally stabbed her with a household knife while their grandmother, who neighbors say lives on the first floor, was doing laundry in the basement. The children's parents were away; their mother, identified by friends as Regine Revelus, is a nurse at a Boston hospital, Wells said.

Sarafina, a student at the Tucker Elementary School, just behind the house, called 911 around 5 p.m. An officer on patrol in the neighborhood arrived within a minute, Wells said, and could hear an altercation inside as he reached the second floor. The 911 operator tried to persuade Sarafina to open the door, but when she didn't the officer broke through.

"As the officer entered the door, (Revelus) decapitated (Bianca) in front of him," Wells said. "He actually walked into a killing field. He walked into such carnage, as far as the atrocity of it, I've never seen it."

Within moments, four officers were inside and two of them shot Revelus as he tried to get to Sarafina, Wells said. Revelus fell, still clutching the knife.

Details about the number of shots and who killed Revelus were pending the outcome of an autopsy Sunday.

Revelus had recently served jail time on a gun charge, Wells said, but the details would not be released until courts opened Monday. Neighbors said Revelus was in a car that was pulled over by police and from which one occupant threw a gun into a sewer.

Police had been called to the family's house in 2004 after a domestic violence report that Revelus had punched a woman living there, Wells said.

A neighbor, Norm Walsh, said his daughter Kate Walsh, a Hollis, N.H., police officer, reported hearing two shots as she went outside to bring in groceries from the family car. Moments later, a blood-covered officer emerged carrying Sarafina, seeking towels to stanch her bleeding.

"It's shocking to me," said Norm Walsh, whose son is the same age as Revelus. "He played a lot of pickup hoop in the driveway."

Walsh said the family members had lived in the neighborhood for more than 20 years and were warm. They were of Haitian descent, as are many residents in the neighborhood, where Creole is spoken alongside English.

"The family is a solid family. Both parents worked; good kids. Completely makes no sense," Walsh said.

Samantha's classmates referred to her by her nickname, Princess, and remarked at her grace, class and friendliness. She had been one of about 20 students who had been at the high school Saturday afternoon to rehearse for a poetry jam on Thursday. Saturday morning, Samantha also had practiced for a school fashion show.

"She had a stage presence like you couldn't believe," classmate Kassi Stein said.

Sobbing, she added: "She had just a soft voice and everyone would lean in to hear what she was saying."

In one of the poems Samantha was to recite, "Acquaintance," she wrote of the strength of women in the face of "ignorant souls."

The poem closed, "So what lousy wind brought you here? What values you offer? She's a woman, a queen, a goddess. Don't treat her like any other."

A two-hour grief counseling session was held at the school Sunday afternoon and will be offered Monday to students and employees.

The officers involved in the case were placed on administrative leave and were receiving counseling from the Boston Police Department.

My heart goes out to the family. There are so many tragic accidents happening around the world. The 5-year old child did not get a chance to enjoy her birthday party. We all need to take one day at a time and ask the Lord to protect us from harm and danger. We also need to learn to get long with everybody and stop the anger, backstabbing, envious, mistreatment and wrong doing toward one another. This accident and the one happen in North Carolina should give us a wake up call.

No, we don't need to ask the Lord for anything.

There is no Lord, and if there was, it's quite clear He's preoccupied with other things to concern Himself with what He supposedly created. Taking things one day at a time isn't going to change a thing other than provide comfort to those who can't/won't take responsibility for what goes on in this country.

What we need to do is act. Contact our government officials and question funding for our state mental institutions which are sadly and - in cases such as this one - tragically neglected, ignored and underfunded.

You needn't call on a higher power if you so wish, but isn't it still possible to be respectful of those who find strength in faith? Religious fanaticism and monopolism are real problems, and anti-religious fanaticism is a problem as well.

There are people of faith who believe in both prayer and action. Let's not pretend they're all reactionary or misinformed.

You can do both, Pray and act.

If he could have, I'm sure he would have. I am sorry for the family and for the officer, who will no doubt be having flashbacks about what he saw, not to mention he'll be asking himself the same sort of "if only I'd been able to shoot him first, would she have gotten away" question that you raised.

jesus, this story has kicked me squarely in the gut. What beautiful souls, I haven't cried like this for someone I don't know in a long, long while. Rest in peace, sweet angels.

I read about this last night and had nightmares. I can only imagine what the poor family, the officer who witnessed Bianca's murder, and other law enforcement and EMS who were there are going through.

The word crime doesn't begin to grasp the revulsion of what happened. My condolences and blessings to all those affected by this horror. May Sarafina and her family be surrounded by love and compassion.

Sounds like Early Onset Schizophrenia. This guy had a severe mental breakdown.

My brother was stricken and thought he was an angel for a week and that the only safe place on the planet was the perimeter surrounding his house. He got better for a while before he shot himself in the head 8 months later.

I am so sorry to hear that about your brother. Cases like this must open your own wounds. Regardless of what led up to this young man's rampage, it is obvious he was a very tortured human being. His death is also tragic.

I am lost for words and completely numb. Is something in the air or water that's making people turn on each other to commit these senseless acts?

I feel so sorry for the parents - thank goodness one of their children was spared. It's a wound beyond belief for them, and for the poor survivor, who no doubt will feel guilty it was her and not her sisters that survived, even feel guilty for her brother's death, likely enough - I hope she gets enough help to understand that nothing was her fault, to be able to live, maybe even forget a little.

I'm sorry for that cop too - he'll hold that memory the rest of his life, wonder if only he'd gotten there a bit faster, run a light, etc. He needs to have help too.

Hoplefully he will one day be able to focus on the child that was saved, and the neighbors, and anyone else who might have gotten in front of that maniac. He can know he did save lives that day.

My condolences to the family, also. And to the officer who had to witness such a scene right in front of him. He's going to have those memories for the rest of his life.

The family's grief is greater, and they are going to need so much help, I hope they get it.

But I still feel a ton for the officer - he wasn't part of this, he chose a job where he is there to help all of us (in spite of hearing about the bad cops, most are very good people), and now he has to live with that sight for the rest of his life. The poor guy.

What is not mentioned here, and is only briefly touched on in local media sources here, is that that the young man had recently returned from jail on gun charges. People always ask "how could this happen?" But never "how could we as a people let something like this happen?" Having lost family to murder by someone with mental illness, I know how lacking our system is to treat those with mental issues, and give them the services that they need. I don't know what kind of services he got in prison, but clearly nothing rehabilitative.

I know that someone below said "no politics" and I am not trying to be disrespectful to what I know this family is going through, but if we're going to ask questions, they need to be the right ones. And to those who are saying "it should have just been him" remember that those parents are burying three children.

This story disturbs me on so many levels. What appeared to be a normal, warm family on the outside as what one neighbor describes, was in reality a very dysfunctional home. This child Sarafina will be scarred for the rest of her life having been exposed to such a vicious crime and my heart goes out to the seventeen year old and five year old sisters who will never have a chance at life.
I am troubled by this story, because as a parent myself of three children, I would like to think that I would know if one of children were a sociopath. I am sorry, but I blame the parents of this young man who decided to take the lives of his two sisters and attempted to take the life of his other sister. Clearly, this young man had an anger which stemmed towards his parents, ultimately forcing him to inflict a horrendous crime upon his sisters. I would hope that any parent who reads this article, knows the importance of watching our children very closely. We should never allow the day to day responsibilities take time away from knowing who our children are and what they are capable of doing. Unfortunately, this is the guilt that these parents will have to live with for the rest of their lives. What if I could have done things differently!!!!!!
