First Ladies

The Daily Telegraph:

Michelle Obama, rejecting the French new wine in old bottles approach, is likely to go for a culturally diverse scattering of a 'young' country's most talented new stars: Favourites include the Taiwanese-born Jason Wu; the Thai-born Thakoon Panichgul; the son of Cuban immigrants, Narciso Rodriguez and the Cuban-born Isabel Toledo; the Chile-born and London-raised Maria Cornejo; and the Black American, Tracy Reese.

The PM's wife, Sarah Brown, faces the hardest challenge of all, dwarfing even her husband's doomed attempts to persuade the world he is the fiscal eequivalent of Spiderman, Batman and Superman.

To the detractors of Carla Bruni. She will meet Michelle on Saturday at the Nato Summit in Strasbourg/France.
She will take care of Michelle during the "wifes" program and I am sure they will enjoy to be together. No worry about the communication: Carla Bruni speaks perfectly english as well as french, italian and spanish!

Ok, you are obviously assuming this is a battle of some sort but have you seen the photos so far? There is just no competition. Michelle sparkles and Sarah Brown, bless her, disappears into the background in that dowdy blue number. She is attractive and has a nice, full figure. Why did she wear what looks like an ill-fitting uniform? The other obvious thing was the difference in confidence and comfort. Sarah looks shy and unsure of herself, while Michelle looks relaxed and engaging. It's not Sarah's fault though, the previous British First Lady was heavily criticized for her 'extravagance' in the clothing department ( I'm not sure it was entirely justified because she was probably just making an effort, like some of the other First Ladies but that didn't go down well with the British Establishment, who seem to prefer their First Ladies bland and very much 'in the background') and Sarah is much more restricted as a result.

I don't think "wars" over who is better dressed are a good idea. It implies there is animosity when, I would bet, there is not.

I don't think Sarah Brown fades into the background. She has a strong presence...different from MO's, but still strong.

I personally think all of them are well dressed; however, Michelle Obama has a confidence, style, intelligence, and grace that can't be matched. It's a great combination. Carla Bruni is a mannequin with a voice box, window dressing. Michelle Obama is a woman of substance and style.

Bruni is a spoiled woman of wealth who relentlessly pursued men, power, and more money. Her coy act is just that, and she is not attractive when you look closely at her scars and all the procedures. I think Bruni realizes the intelligent, charming, beautiful and engaging Michelle Obama--the real deal--will naturally upstage the ever attention-seeking Ms. Bruni in a heartbeat.

Michelle Obama came from working class family with no connections, yet she earned undergraduate and law degrees from among the nation's top schools and she enjoyed a successful career in her profession. She is also married to the father of her children - an example of what can be achieved with hard work, integrity and adherence to family values.

Carla Bruni did not go to college, even though she was born into privilege and could have easily attended just about anywhere. She has left a trail of ruined marriages and her child is the product of a "liaison." Clearly, she has the means to do whatever pleases her in life for the moment. She is not a serious person, nor is she a "role model" for most people. Her music career is yet another whim - she is only sucking airtime from more deserving artists who are not rich or married to the president of France.

her child is the product of a liaison"

As a perfect person you can make a such hugly statement! By the way Bristol's child is also "the product of a liaison" like too many children... and may be these children are more loved than some of " married parents" who abuse them.

this is sexist, but michelle likes to look good as do all women. There is no woman who does not want to be called the best dressed woman in the room with all eyes on her. No matter how humble you are. I am also on team Michelle. I love Ms. Sarkozy. I admire her attittude and cache but she will be with the old standard traditional fashion houses. She was trying to be Jackie O last year with her sheath dresses and pill box hats. Michelle is dressing for 2009 with young designers who are taking chances. She wil never wear what carla would wear. Plus she has an coke bottle shape. She can take an outfit to a new level with her complexion and junk in the trunk!!! Work it girlfriend....

well ,Carla Bruni HAS to represents the french " haute couture". Every french First Lady had to do it. At least she does a good job. Think about the former french first ladies in Dior, Chanel etc...
By the way Jackie Kennedy loved french haute couture" particulary Chanel! and for sure Bruni was not trying to imitate Jackie Kennedy, she just was wearing haute couture!!

Keep an eye for Sonsoles Espinosa, wife of Spains Prime Minister. Way more stylish than Sara Brown.

G20 Summit: fashion battle of the 'first ladies'

The 'summit wives' at the London G20 meeting, including Michelle Obama and Sarah Brown, will be engaged in their own battle - on the fashion front.

A headline that could have come straight from the 50s. Thank God, women have made so much progress.

This is so silly. A "fashion battle", please. Let Bruni be a fashion plate with her model's build and her top-named designers. I had no idea that Mrs. Brown was so...chunky...I hope the designers do right by her. And Michelle is Michelle, our Michelle, and she won't let us down. But I sure wish media would find something else to obsess over.

Pardon, but this is the Style zone of HuffPost. It would be very odd if MO's coverage in this zone was about her academic achievements.

Logically, it should be about her style, which it is.
