What's Your Reaction?
Michael Moore

Documentary filmmaker Michael Moore has spent the last two days on Capitol Hill buttonholing members of Congress and quizzing them on their banking-sector bailout votes.

"All the usual suspects have dodged us, but I'm moving a little faster these days so we were able to catch up with some of them," said Moore in an interview with the Huffington Post.

Moore was spotted at a hearing of the Senate Financial Services Committee Tuesday morning, seated behind TARP watchdog Elizabeth Warren -- baseball cap and all.

He spent the rest of the afternoon wielding his camera in the Dirksen Senate office building, looking for members to go on the record.

In the middle of an interview with Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) on Tuesday, a bird above Moore relieved itself on the filmmaker's shoulder. He brushed it off his jacket with the help of an aide. "Congressman Boehner is up in the tree," Moore speculated of the Republican minority leader from Ohio. (He wasn't.)

On Monday, Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio) invited him into the Capitol, where he filmed a sit-down interview with her on the bailout.

"I was surprised how many people know him," said Kaptur. "He's a real celebrity." She said that Moore was knowledgeable about the crisis but looking for answers rather than pitching his own financial rescue strategy.

"He wanted to hear the story from one member on the inside who'd opposed Bush," said Kaptur, who opposed the bailouts.

Moore spent last week on Wall Street, looking for an explanation as to how we got where we are. He said that he's gotten "better explanations down here, because these are the representatives of the people. On Wall Street, I have to say, our week on Wall Street was full of comedy."

What he has learned on Capitol Hill has only made him angrier about the situation, he said. "If anything, I'm more upset, when I've heard the stories behind the stories as to how this whole thing has come about and what's happening," he said. "I think the public is going to be quite shocked when they see this film, whatever they think they know now."

His film has, not surprisingly, a populist theme. "My fear is they're going to leave the theater asking the ushers, 'Excuse me, but where are the torches and pitchforks?' And I'm a nonviolent person, but I think certainly the crew, all of us, have been feeling that while we've been making this."

Moore said that he doesn't like to talk much about his films while he's making them, "because I've got to make sure I get to finish the film," but he sketched out some of the details on the Huffington Post last month:

I am in the middle of shooting my next movie and I am looking for a few brave people who work on Wall Street or in the financial industry to come forward and share with me what they know. Based on those who have already contacted me, I believe there are a number of you who know "the real deal" about the abuses that have been happening. You have information that the American people need to hear. I am humbly asking you for a moment of courage, to be a hero and help me expose the biggest swindle in American history.

All correspondence with me will be kept confidential. Your identity will be protected and you will decide to what extent you wish to participate in telling the greatest crime story ever told.

The important thing here is for you to step up as an American and do your duty of shedding some light on this financial collapse. A few good people have already come forward, which leads me to believe there are many more of you out there who know what's going on. Here's your chance to let your fellow citizens in on the truth.

As an investment, or to make it easier to get stuff like annual reports and to have a legal right to get into stockholder meetings?

My reply to above: Both. But if Moore were principled, he would hold no stocks in companies he demonizes. There is no way to confound my reasoning on this point.

but how do you gain financially by badmouthing a company in which you've invested money

My reply to above: By making money on investments in good companies (financially) who happen to be bad companies as portrayed in your films."Your" being Moore, of course. In other words, Moore is having a huge piece of cake and eating it too.He makes money from his investments. He makes money from his films. He is a hypocrite of the highest order.

Moore is an uncouth person who produces Populist films--films that are meant to feed the Progressive fire. Now, his target for years has been Bush (not that I am a fan of Bush for he was no true conservative) . . . . One must wonder where he will find his next material.

Whatever his next film is, it will NOT be a criticism of Obama. With Bush gone, I suppose he will only have the few remaining conservatives to conveniently target.

There Moore is sitting there in his spiffy attire pretending to observe congress!

Give me a break! And give Moore the hook.

More unsubstantiated neocon bs from someone who can't wait to bash a movie even before it has been written or filmed.

No, adamnb, more substantiated facts from a Classical Liberal who has not yet bashed any film he has not seen. I merely made a prediction regarding Moore`s next film. And I do intend to see his next film. My potential, potential mind you, policy on watching films by suspect directors is to go to nearby Hong Kong and get the pirated versions. That way I get to watch the film without actually contributing one Hong Kong dollar to the usual suspects.I so enjoy tearing such meaningful comments as yours into itty-bitty pieces. And it so easy. Too easy. It`s like . . . . It`s like Sean Penn! I like his acting, but I abhor his behavior. Same potential policy applies to such actors as well. Potential policy, mind you.
Because it is illegal to purchase pirated films. Oh, yes. Themistocles has spoken. You are hereby defeated.

Michael Moore makes a practice of selective editing, twisting statements and taking quotes out of context. His movies are fundamentally deceitful.

Any American who speaks on camera with Michael Moore deserves what he gets.

OK.. start enumerating all those "selective edits" and "twisted statements" you accuse Michael Moore of making. I have seen all of his movies and don't recall anything of the sort.

So c'mon, point out all these edits and twists. Waiting......

Stalking? He's getting politicians to go on the record and trying to get clarification on policy. Is Huffington Post opposed to that?

I second that. Couldn't you use something other than stalking? Lump him with Stewart, another man who likes to ask tough questions and get clarification. The MSM isn't going to do this and I can't wait to see this movie.

It's okay for Moore to harass and stalk people because he is a liberal.

Nonsensical charges from hairbrained neocons. How is he stalking anyone who agrees to sit down and be interviewed on camera?

Thanks Michael, after Farenheit 9-11, and Sicko, which were right on the mark can't wait for this one.
It's very sad that the only way many of the public can get any information on how badly were being
screwed is when a few brave people are willing to take on the mighty Politicians, CEO'S, Corporations and Wll Streets upper crust.

Hey Granny...I bet you just can't wait for his sequel to Roger & Me of 20 years ago when he was exposing Smith, the then CEO of GM, with shutting down factories and laying off thousands of union workers...Will the sequel be named Barry and Me?? After all, it is BHO that got Wagner fired so the new Government Motors (GM) can shut down factories, close dealerships, and layoff thousands of union and non-union workers.

I was watching the CSPAN coverage and I noticed M. Moore sitting in the back and it did my heart good, I thought that was the perfect place for him to be. Can't wait to hear what he says about TARP.

Notice how the beliefs of the majority are reflected in these blog posts. If Congress listened to what people blog on these posts, then we would be out of Iraq, we would have health care, we would have been able to travel legally to Cuba long ago, etc. The reason Congress doesn't pay attention to people like us who blog as much as they should is because many if not most of us just write, instead of doing things like going to demonstrations. If there were more demonstrations, Congress and the media would be forced to pay attention to us more. There probably will be a lot of demonstrations now because people are at the point where they have nothing to lose.

Hey now Honest...demonstrations are often a good thing...they are demonstrating in London as I write this post...they are certainly stimulating the economy in London...500 folks just to support BHO will cost the US taxpayers plenty...overtime for the security force...glass repairs for the violent acts...and so much more

"demonstrations are often a good thing"

...yup, sorta like that demonstration that took place Nov. 5, 2008. We demonstrated how to rid ourselves of a whole lotta @$$hat republicans.

IMO, Moore does more harm than good when it comes to advocating for left of center or populist issues/causes. He comes off as having a chip on his shoulder as big as all outdoors and *always* looks like a slob. (Sorry to be superficial but I don't think that helps anyone to bring people around to their opinions.)

Personally and politically, I agree with him on most current political issues (including the banking sector bailout), but find he annoys me thoroughly. My politics are to the left of many other people in the U.S. so I can't imagine he is able to move anyone to the left whose beliefs are centrist much less conservative. Instead, I think he probably pushes these folks more strongly to the right.

Plus, I think he's as much of a demagogue as Rush, though obviously way to the other side of the political spectrum.

Moore is nothing like Rush. This was brought up in another article here. Moore cares about humanity, Rush is all about Rush. Moore is intelligent, Rush is dumber than a brick and one could go on about the comparisons. Moore makes documentaries that prick the collective conscience. What does Rush do again? That's right, he spews hatred. I don't know how anyone can ever compare these two.

Too bad Michael can't become invisible and walk the halls of the capitol. Now that would make a very interesting movie! His presence must be daunting for some on the hill, and especially wall street.

I keep waiting for the justice system to start serving arrest warrants. But, so far, none.
