NEW YORK — NBC Universal says it saved $2 million last year by going green.

The media giant has been promoting environmentally friendly efforts on its TV shows and in practice, looking for reduced power costs and telling its executives to lay off the bottled water.

The company says its polls show NBC's image as a "green" network is being recognized by viewers. Although it hasn't translated into ratings success, the company believes it's a smart strategy for the future.

NBC executive Lauren Zalaznick says advertisers are interested in reaching consumers concerned about the environment.

All the conservatives must be really angry- that's $2 million less going to their America-hating friends.

They would have saved even more if they had not had Matt Lauer and a vast production crew galavanting around the planet that very week, last year.

This is precisely how to go about making people green. As much as we want to believe that humans are downright good and moral once you strip away the grim of modern society, the fact is we aren't. We're a very selfish people and think that in theory it would be good to save the environment but that;s not going to stop me from buying all this unnecceasry crap which society has convined me I need. No, how you go about it is to make life so inconvenient for people through taxes and the like that the only opportunity these people have lest they want to go broke is to "go green." It's a very simple premise which works all over society. Tell me, what is more likely to encourage people to recycle:
A) some loving encouragement
B) a $50 fine
C) a $10,000 fine
And once that first generation or two of stubborn people are dead, their kin will have grown up with recycling being ubiquitous and thus we have a new lifestyle which doesn't even need to be provoked by advertising.

Its great to see NBC has saved so much money through their green efforts, because of their high public image this will lead to many others giving green a try. GreenScene EMS has been helping small less public companies find their green image and business has never been better. We have been hiring new auditors nationwide and thanks to NBC for their part.

I replaced all my light bulbs with those CFL(?) light bulbs. The ones that cost an arm and a leg to buy. But let me tell you my electric bill has been cut IN HALF. That is no lie. Every time I open my electric bill I am pleasantly surprised. It upsets me that one of my family members insist on using the old high energy bulbs in her closet?!? I keep wondering how much cheaper the bill could be.

Please dispose of those "great new lightbulbs" in the right way.
They have mercury in them, and with the numbers of these bulbs that are being produced and sold. You have to wonder what will happen when they do go out, and get thrown into the landfills by the Gazillions.

Good for pointing that out. All too few people know about this.

I know. One broke in the supply bag I keep them in. I had no recourse but to discard it directly into the trash. But I think if they stop working and burn out, you can take them to your local home center for recycling. Check your local center. KEEP THEM AWAY FROM KIDS if they do break. I haven't had one stop working on me after almost 2 years.

good NBC, but going green should not be about image (that's PR flawed) but rather about being responsible for the own actions and attitudes towards our planets!
