First Posted: 5/1/09 Updated: 5/25/11

UPDATE:

LONDON - President Barack Obama has arrived in Europe, with a hefty economic and political agenda for his first journey across the Atlantic since taking office two months ago. The first stop for the president and first lady Michelle Obama was London. Obama's focus is a G-20 meeting of the world's major economic powers and a NATO summit marking the 60 years since the alliance was founded to blunt Soviet aggression in Europe.

Obama is on an eight-day, five-country trip. He will meet with European leaders who split with the United States over the war in Iraq and the treatment of suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay under President George W. Bush.

The president also is meeting with Queen Elizabeth II.

FROM EARLIER:

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama left for Europe Tuesday, packing a weighty agenda as he heads for critical economic and political talks in his first journey across the Atlantic since taking office two months ago.

Obama's focus: a G-20 meeting of the world's major economic powers and a NATO summit marking the 60 years since the alliance was founded to blunt Soviet aggression in Europe.

Obama's eight-day, five-country trip begins early Tuesday, sending him to meet with European leaders who split with the United States over the war in Iraq and the treatment of suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay under President George W. Bush.

First up: a summit of the world's economic powers in London to address the global financial meltdown that has defined the first two months of Obama's administration.

"The president and America are going to listen in London, as well as to lead," White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said.

The main event in London is Thursday's summit on the global financial crisis among the Group of 20 wealthy and developing nations. Together, they represent 85 percent of the world's economy.

Obama planned to meet with leaders of Britain, Russia and China _ major players in the U.S. financial system. He also scheduled meetings with leaders of India and South Korea while in London.

But money isn't the sole agenda item. Obama plans to attend international summits on urgent topics, including the downward-spiraling fight against terrorists in Afghanistan and Pakistan. He also will make his first stop in a Muslim nation, Turkey.

Wildly popular around the globe but relatively inexperienced in foreign affairs, Obama and his wife, Michelle, also will squeeze in a Buckingham Palace audience with Queen Elizabeth II. He will deliver a speech in France on the trans-Atlantic relationship, and an address in Prague on weapons proliferation. And he will host a round-table session with students in Turkey.

When Obama went to Europe last summer _ he was a senator seeking the presidency _ he was received like a rock star. His welcome this time is expected to be no less enthusiastic.

Since taking office, Obama has made down payments on several campaign promises that had endeared him to Europe, such as addressing global warming and moving to end the Iraq war and close the U.S. prison camp at Guantanamo Bay.

Obama isn't doing too badly with his constituents at home either. In Washington Post-ABC News poll released Tuesday, 66 precent of respondents said they approve of the way he is handling his job. Sixty percent said they approve of the way he is handling the economy.

I think Obama should have bowed and Michelle should have curtsied. My grandmother taught us how when I was a child just incase we ever were in the presence of the queen. She deserves the respect as a world leader. I don't know who is teaching the obamas protocol but they need to get someone better. Were they raised in a barn. I cannot believe how stupid they are about protacol. Get real an Ipod. I think it is funny they had to move their bulletproof car. Evidently they don't know where to park either. They are so full of themselves.

Oh get stuffed.

As I recall, Nancy Reagan didn't curtsy to the Queen, and henceforth, no FLOTUS has. Was Nancy raised in a barn?

One bows or curtsies to a monarch if they are one's sovereign -- otherwise a respectful attitude is perfectly appropriate. The Queen is a perfectly lovely lady, but she's not Queen of the world. I'm an ex-Brit, now U.S Citizen. Were I to meet the Queen, I'd look her straight in the eye and shake her hand, as any American should.

Your attitude, my dear Pamela, is pure r@cist filth.

Are you serious? Obama is the ELECTED leader of the United States. The queen is a relic of an imperialist past only relevant because people like you feel subservient to money, power and an undemocratic concept of royalty.

People who think Obama SHOULD give any importance to of this billionaire white elephant on corporate welfare, needs to take a civics lesson in equality and democracy.

I noticed that too. I was talking to a tourist from England the other day, and he says it's a generational thing. The people who lived through World War 2 are much shorter than the people who grew up afterward, because of better nutrition. You can see it in the fact that the princes are all around 6 feet tall. The guy I was talking to was about 5'6', and he says that all of his childen are much taller than him.

Neither the Duke nor the Queen are English! Basically a German monarchy - although the Queen's mother was Scottish - not the same thing as I am sure you all know.

bovine hormones in milk and meat perhaps? Giving cow's milk based formula to humans perhaps?

OK, so here I am, an Ex-Pat Brit, living about as far way from his chilly homeland as it's possible to get.
Somewhat of a Republican (in the British sense -- none too fond of the Monarchy and the class privilege it represents), but an admirer of the Queen for her willingness to accept the responsibility that comes with the awful job life has handed her and never complain about it. Seeing her meeting with our young and smart first couple is a great moment.

I'd love to know what they spoke about. My guess is something along the lines of "That's one helluva a big job you've taken on there, young fellah."

Coolest world leader ever.

Obama's rock star status WILL translate into Obama being able to more affectively push US initiatives internationally.

If the obama's are so classy and intellectual why the hell did they give the brits DVD's? I hear the Irish will be getting lucky charms. Maybe Obama will make up and give the queen the declaration of independence and say "I'm sorry, so sorry!" They gave the queen a ipod, she's already got one, can't they think of better gifts than this?!

Is anyone else taken aback by how tiny the Queen and her husband appear? I mean, I knew the Obamas would be taller than them but I didn't expect them to dwarf the couple! They look like two Benjamin Buttons :)

Can you guys ever feel happy about your life and self without relying on Obama so much for that?

Can you ever feel happy about your life without trolling Huffpost trying to make everyone as miserable as you obviously are?

I'm very happy, just amused by the fact that you guys depend so much on politicians for happiness. You guys shouldn't love big daddy gov't so much, small gov't is the way to go.

The answer is yes. Why do you ask?

I just have to echo the majority of comments. After watching the slide show myself, a man of 50 years, almost cried tears of joy and pride. I hope that along with new leadership in American, the Obama's can usher in intellectualism, class, and style.
