NEW YORK — A makeup artist and a fashion stylist claim in coordinated lawsuits that they got ugly treatment from Queen Latifah when she cheated them out of $1 million.

Celebrity cosmetology consultant Roxanna Floyd says she lost $700,000 when the rapper-actress failed to pay her for work she did between July 2005 and February 2008.

In a separate lawsuit, celebrity fashion stylist Susan Moses said she was cheated of $300,000 during the same period.

The lawsuits were filed Monday in federal court in Manhattan.

Amanda Silverman, a spokeswoman for the actress whose roles in movies include "Hairspray" and "Mad Money," says the lawsuits have no merit, but she can't comment more on pending litigation.

Wouldn't the company by which Latifa is employed as a representative be responsible for her preparation? Why would she be paying for these people anyway?

Went to her site.Turns out she is not a real MUA she works for Covergirl.
I'm thinking maybe they didn't pay her for her, obviously exorbitant, consulting fees so she's trying to recoup from latifah. If latifah in under a contract with CG why would she be paying for for a CG consultant?

Whose site did you go to? CoverGirl and many cosmetic companies hire many prominent MUA to advise them on trends and what is cutting edge that the masses might want to purchase next season. Floyd is indeed a real MUA. I worked on a set with her over a decade ago. Cover Girl wouldn't hire someone who is not a real makeup artist or one without any clout in the industry.

Never heard of a "celebrity cosmetology consultant". What is that?
A professional makeup artist is a professional makeup artist. Period.

I have a friend who is a dental surgeon and told me that getting paid by people with money is really hard. They take forever, ignore invoices, claim the service was inferior, anything to get out of paying what they owe. And we're just talking rich people who aren't even celebrities. I would suspect that celelbrity types are even worse. I like Latifah, but I would believe this story anyway.

That's probably the secret to how the rich stay rich. Sad.

It's obvious that there are so few people who have any knowledge of the industry based on the comments posted here. Makeup artists are freelancers who submit their invoices and wait and wait and wait for their agent to receive payments from their client. Very few freelancers who have celebrity clients will refuse an assignment unless they were abused on a job. And even then some would work for that client again. But we all take work with the hope that a check will come through in a professional situation.
My educated guess is that Latifah and her people reason that Floyd can just take all the photographs from past assignments and use them to get other work or some kind of celebrity reality gig like Jay Manuel did with Tyra.
Besides the Queen is a huge star now and who (who knew her when) would dare sue her?

Thank You, NewYorkMike it appears you know about the buisness, I was about to prejudge this stylist, but she needs to get paid also. I am a fan of queen Latifa and I presume she is a good buisness lady, I hope she and this stylist can come to some agreement.

I like her I think she's a good actress and an attractive woman too. I find it difficult to believe that employees or contractors would literally work for nothing for years before demanding payment or seeking a legal remedy. As for sending a dress or unsolicited items or gifts to her and then demanding payment it appears to me to be nothing short of a con job..

Especially as she used to sing songs about the injustice of being poor... "All Hail the Queen" - great album, circa 1990. People can change, however.

I'm not thinking anything until evidence is presented and cases made.

When she was rapping that song homegirl didn't have any money to speak of but now there is a bank account and investments to protect. If that means stiffing people or passing the invoice to the record company or movie studio well so be it.

I've met Roxanna several times on photo shoots and she is above board and very professional. In the glamour professions, behind the scenes people (make up, hair, stylists, photographers etc,) are always being asked to eat the costs of servicing the stars.
You would not believe the number of stars who just will not pay people on time and continue to stretch their services out. It's always done with the carrot dangling of more work down the road and P.R. credit. Latifah knows better; Roxanna is one of the most and best known black make up artists in the business. Floyd's agent definitely tried to get paid before the invoices spiralled out over a half million. She would not have brought this suit if this wasn't a last stop manoeuvre.
