On Wednesday night Prime Minister Gordon Brown hosted a working dinner for G-20 leaders at 10 Downing Street. The delegates dined on baked Scottish salmon, Welsh lamb, and something called lovage (see the full menu here), all prepared by Naked Chef Jamie Oliver.

Other than the working and the dining, the most important issue of the evening was, obviously, what were the first wives wearing?

Michelle Obama--always the pragmatist--simply removed the black cardigan she wore to meet Queen Elizabeth earlier in the day, and voila! Dinner attire.

And where were the male spouses, Nestor Kirchner (husband of Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, Argentina's president) and Joachim Sauer (husband of German Chancellor Angela Merkel) in the group photo?

Or see all of Michelle Obama's London outfits here.

PHOTOS:

The Obamas arrived early, to screams from the crowd that had gathered.

I like Michelle Obama very much. But you know what? I like my best friend too...like her enough in fact to be honest when she asks if something looks right on her. Michelle needs a good girlfriend/ stylist around for those moments of honesty. If I were Michelle's pal, I'd have told her girlfriend, re-think some of these outfits. Not because I don't like her-- but because I DO, and want her looking her BEST.

That sleeveless black/white dress was (sorry Michelle) well, it was just awful. The top was WAY too tight, It looked like she was wearing a high-school issue bathing suit under a big black skirt. The slouchy sweater didn't help. Michelle's long limbs made the 3-quarter sleeves look as if the sweater had shrunk in the dryer.

She's certainly not alone- a LOT of the wives obviously didn't take their girlfriends shopping with them EITHER.
As First Lady, there will be times when she'll have to adhere to some custom or another when meeting foreign dignitaries. (comes with the job) Someone who cared should've told her that outfit wasn't in keeping with customary attire for meeting the Queen. Not because England's superior, but merely because it IS their *custom*.

Save fashion risks for visiting dignitaries that have no such customs. In another country, someone might really take offense if she ignored their customs regarding propriety of dress. Michelle, I love ya, but you need to branch out with your fashion advisors.

I'll admit I'm not a fan of Michelle Obama. Unfortunately she has failed to realize that she is a roll model for young women, and should comport herself as one, not high fiving little kids, and patting the Queen on the back. She'll never be another Jackie Kennedy she's just not in her league, but she certainly could improve. One of the things that bugs me are the numerous photo's of her with her legs crossed at the knees, and more of her body and panty hose on display than we really want to see. If she has to cross her legs will someone please tell her to cross them at the ankles....just like Jackie used to do!

Jackie O. graced the WH almost 50 yrs ago. When are all you weirdo's going to let her rest in peace?
I am old enough to remember the 'Camelot' time (or at least when it came screeching to an end), & I would bet that Michelle would look pretty silly in a pill box hat. Fashions change, Women have changed, & I really wish that this Country would change also.

I am sure that Michelle would much rather be known for her Princeton degree than her pretty dresses, but I guess small minds have to think of something to bash the First Lady.

BTW, did anyone ever say that Jackie O. didn't dress enough like Mamie Eisenhower or Bess Truman?

If only Cindy McCain had become the first lady. She could show them how to look good and spend no more than the entire budget for a small third world country. There is a reason why people like Michelle. She is warm and friendly, we can relate to her. Laura Bush was a fine first lady, she just had to smile through the nonsense of her hubby.

Michelle has been well received by the world. Besides truth be told there are few things made by designers that many of us would chose to wear. Very foolish insecure rich ladies wear that stuff. Sort of like reverse Emperors Clothes syndrome.

It seems there are but a handful of these wives who KNOW what is appropriate to wear for these functions. Our first lady is not one of them. Her choices of cheap, ill-fitting, loud-colored ensembles was a disaster. Certainly the fashion editors in NYC will take her aside next week and set her straight and help her as they did Hillary Clinton who also did not know what good clothes are about. We have many great designers in this country who make very high quality clothes so why did Michelle go so cheap? She needs help ASAP.

Judging people by the clothes they wear?
Christian values at work I see.

What are you talking about? This is a forum on the fashions these women are wearing and what we think of them. If you want a religious experience; go to a religious site.

It's a little bit like the Academy Awards. A giant gathering of various figures about whom we often hear, or see in certain footage.

The two women's husbands need to be in the picture. That would be change.
The girls of the world do not need to see more "fashion of the first ladies."
We are not ornaments.
We have no gender parity in the world and this is part of our problem with violence in the world and our financial distress. On the INter-Parliamentary list of gender parity the UNited States ranks 71.
Numbers matter. We need representation.
No more fashion for women only, please.

The south Korean woman looks beautiful., very elegant. Michelle looks too casual and young in most of her outfits worn in UK?

Gursharan Kaur is not wearing a salwar kameez. That is a sari.

Emine Erdogan is also not wearing a salwar kameez.

As far as I can see, no one in the picture is wearing a kimono or a salwar kameez.

I wonder what the husbands of the female leaders did at the dinner? There wasn't really a place for either one of them. Did the women come alone?
