NEW YORK — CBS is pulling the plug on the soap opera "Guiding Light" after a 72-year run that predates television, the show a victim of the economy and changed viewing habits. The drama's final episode will air on Sept. 18. The Guinness Book of World Records has cited it as the longest-running television drama. It began as a 15-minute serial on NBC Radio on Jan. 25, 1937, and debuted on CBS TV in 1952, focusing on the fictional town of Springfield and the Spaulding, Lewis and Cooper families.

"For many of us, it was the first show we ever watched," said Lynn Leahey, editorial director of Soap Opera Digest. Unlike prime-time shows that came and went, it was a constant in people's lives. "It really is heartbreaking to see something like this go away."

Procter & Gamble Productions, which makes the show, informed cast and crew Wednesday at separate sets in New York and New Jersey. The company isn't giving up on the story, and will explore different ways to keep it going after September, a spokeswoman said.

Soap operas have been in a long, slow decline in popularity, primarily because many of the women who made up their loyal audiences are no longer at home at that hour. They're working, and can find the communal experience that their favorite soaps once gave them elsewhere.

"Guiding Light" had the lowest ratings of the eight daytime dramas on the air. When it leaves, CBS and ABC will have three weekday soap operas, with NBC having one.

"The numbers are really tough for all of these old dramas," said Ron Raines, the actor who portrayed the villain Alan Spaulding in "Guiding Light."

"I don't think any of the other shows want any of us to go off. We're all in this together," he said.

Many successful actors got their start on "Guiding Light," including James Earl Jones, Calista Flockhart, Hayden Panettiere, Kevin Bacon and Taye Diggs.

Faced with extinction a year ago, "Guiding Light" significantly revamped its operations. It ditched its fixed, three-camera set in favor of portable cameras that enabled producers to shoot in different locations. The move saved money and changed the show's look to make it seem more like the reality shows younger viewers are accustomed to.

It didn't work, at least enough for CBS. The network hasn't said what will replace "Guiding Light" on the schedule, but it will almost certainly be a talk or game show, which are much cheaper to make than dramas with a large cast.

The changes also made many of the fans and cast members unhappy, said Carolyn Hinsey, Soap Opera Digest columnist. Two of its biggest stars, Beth Ehlers and Ricky Paull Goldin, quit and now work on ABC's "All My Children."

For fans of the genre, Wednesday's move could be a peek into the future.

Ten years from now, "I absolutely think (daytime dramas) will still be around," Leahey said. "I don't know if you'll be able to watch them from noon to three o'clock on network television."

In fact, the cancellation could be an opportunity for "Guiding Light," she said. Perhaps there's a way to keep the show alive on cable or online; Procter & Gamble says it will have to evaluate whether there's a cost-effective way to do that.

For now, its cast and crew are in mourning.

"What is it? 72 years continuous?" Raines said. "That will never be touched. It's a very sad thing, but these are the times we live in. It's very tough out there."

Everything in this country seems to be expendable. No dedication. No committment. No loyalty. And the general public has the attention span of gnats. CBS has thumbed its nose at legions of loyal fans who have watched Guiding Light for generations, handing it down from great grandmother to grandmother to daugther to granddaughter, as we have done in my family over the decades. None of us, I repeat, none of us have been counted by Nielsen. Not once!!! The system is archaic and outdated. Women work now. Hello!!! We don't sit around watching television. So we record, DVR and watch on the internet. But we still watch. Every day. As for the show and the complaints about its quality, even with the drastic cuts that were imposed by "the powers that be" which forced crippling changes over the past couple of years and nearly destroyed the show, the cast , staff, and crew of Guiding Light have managed to overcome the damage and produce a quality production that in the past few months is one of the best written and best acted shows on television, rivaling anything else I've seen, day or night. I will follow this show to whatever channel or network or cable station has the good sense to scoop it up and I will support them and their advertisers like I have supported CBS for the past 35 years. If you haven't been watching, check it out and see what you've been missing.

I am a new 34 year old, un-counted non-Nielsen fan, who just found this show this past January thanks to the buzz the Otalia relationship has garnered them. In tuning in, I happily found the best written daytime drama on the airwaves today and am heartbroken that CBS dropped them thanks to the Jurassic Nielsen System that couldn't accurately depict a fan base, in the industry as a whole depended on it for it's survival...Which it does...And that is probably why tv shows across the board are taking rating hits because there are so many ways that people are watching that Nielsen can't track them. I know for a fact that GL has a huge world wide following. Heck, just look at the YouTube hits it gets on a daily basis...Where are THOSE counted in the Nielsen's? Guiding Light admittedly has faultered in the past, but it is by far the most improved show on any of the big three, and has become the ONLY daytime drama programed to record on my DVR...I would dearly love if P&G found it another home (i.e SOAPnet, Lifetime, TnT) and would happily follow it where ever it might land and would even go one step further as to buy as many P&G products necessary to see that it stayed there with all of the actors, writers, producers and crew happily in place.

I am a 31 year old woman. I also am not counted by Nielson. I love this show and I think it is a big tragedy if another network like Soapnet or Lifetime were not to pick this up. We have over two million viewers and the show has recently been on fire and bringing new viewers in every day. I will follow this show to any network or pay to watch it if need be. I hope networks and advertisers are reading this because they could greatly benefit from people buying their products.

I am a 33 year old woman and I am a dedicated Guiding Light viewer. I am furious that CBS cancelled GL. I hope they do find a new network to air GL. Like others who have posted here, I will follow GL wherever it airs. KEEP THE LIGHT ON.

I'm a 26yr old woman. I love Guiding Light. I'm a relatively new viewer. I'm not counted by the Neilsen ratings. Yet I'm here, watching the show every day it's on, seeing the ads, acknowledging the advertisers and their products, buying them.

I know I'm only one of new viewers to this longest running drama in television history,
I hope Procotr and Gamble will be successful in finding a new home for Guiding Light.
I would follow this show anywhere it leads,

pSoapnet, Lifetime, TV Guide Channel... please save Guiding Light,
this show is pioneering yet again right now with their most beautiful lovestory between two women ever told.

I am a working woman..make over $100K/year and I love guiding light.. yeah I watch it on tivo..how do they evaluate ratings these days when hardly anyone live (anyone I know anyway)
The networks need new ways to measure the popularity of a show

GL's new camera format is intimate and .adds real intensity.. give me Guiding Light's well scripted, well acted drama over silly so-called reality shows anyday!
CBS is making a huge mistake..and one I hoep they pay dearly for.

I remember my mother telling me, when she was a little girl in the late 1940's/early 1950's, that my great-grandmother would tell her, "Nap time!" Guiding Light was coming on the radio and my great-grandmother didn't want young ears to hear the "scandalous talk" of the Soap Opera -- but she tuned in, every day! LOL!

Would someone please explain to my how soaps are any more of a waste of time than watching the Real Housewives or Millionaire Matchmaker? For that matter, any number of network programs are just soap operas with bigger budgets than the daytime programs. Hill Street Blues was a soap with cops, ER was a soap with doctors, NCIS is a soap opera with a military setting. Nothing wrong with that. Guiding Light was especially distinguished by the fact that so many of the actors are Broadway performers with impressive credentials.

Guiding Light, Search For Tomarrow, As The World Turns, Love Of Life, Secret Storm..... they were all a part of almost everyone's life in the 50's & 60's. Sad to see them gone, but just writing the names of all these soaps brings back so many memories of relatives who are gone. Bittersweet.

Didn't the decline of soaps begin around the time of the OJ trial? Wasn't the trial getting better ratings than the soaps? If I remember correctly, all the 'Judge' shows started popping up soon thereafter.

Network execs killed the soaps with bad decisions. OJ was just a symptom of the disease.

The OJ trial wasn't getting better ratings. The soaps' ratings dive was caused by the networks constantly interrupting the showing of these daily stories for every bit of "news" related to the OJ saga. The networks are, these days, so desperate to be seen as "breaking" news that they cut into broadcasts of regularly scheduled programs constantly and without any care for what they may be disrupting.

Viewers got sick of not being able to follow their shows because they are disrupted for every headline from a car chase to a bank robbery to a burp from the president to a tennis match or basketball game that the network execs deem to be more important than a show that millions of people watch every day. It's disrespectful to the audience and they voted with their clicker fingers -- moving to cable channels that mostly show repeats of old network programs.

That program was interesting because it had more of a "crime" focus than any other soap had before or since. Many of the actors on that show were really good, too.

I am a new fan to the show of Guiding Light since January 2009, and I have been following the Otalia storyline. I am deeply impressed by the writing for this storyline along with the outstanding acting of Crystal Chappell and Jessica Leicca. This story has been told with intelligence, integrity and is totally believable, and I applaud the writers for the sensitivity in which they have handled this storyline. The writers have achieved something that no other programme (daytime or primetime), in my mind, has managed to achieve, and that is to tell this story, as one of a love story, and not gender specific.

I believe that the show has made massive strides in the last 6 months in the storylines they are telling, in the way that the show is shot, in their attention to detail. I also enjoy watching characters such as Phillip, Doris and Dinah. At the end of the day, one watches tv to be entertained, and in my view, this is entertainment of the highest quality. I really hope that a new station or home can be found for Guiding Light, because apart from the history that it represents for so many people, their storylines have gotten much better, and with so many people losing their jobs, there is the simple fact that there will be a larger viewing population available, and in times of crisis, people need ways to take them away from their daily troubles.

I thought they also did a bang-up job when they started filming in NJ. I understand a lot of old-timer viewers were horrified that the "look" of the show changed so much, but it was a heroic effort on the part of producers, crew, and actors that they were able to make the switch from the studio and maintain the integrity of the story. They are really in a groove now; I agree it would be a shame if some other network doesn't pick this up when it has one of the cheapest budgets of any program of its type.

My DAD got me hooked on the Light in the 70s. He'd pick us up from school with it on his TV band radio. In h.s., my friends and I talked about it every day; in college, we'd play the Guiding Light drinking game on Friday afternoons (at a fraternity house with guys who knew more about the characters and stories than you'd imagine!). Though my viewership has declined in the last couple of years, and I was terribly distracted by the new format, I always tuned in to find out what was going on. I'll miss the Lewises, Bauers, and Spauldings, even the Coopers.
