David Letterman, who infamously told Bill O'Reilly in 2006 that "about 60 percent of what you say is crap," had his old bête noire back on his show on Tuesday night.

At the start of the show, Letterman couldn't help lashing into the Fox News host, saying "I wish I was smart enough to make him look ridiculous... He's going to come out here all puffed up."

From practically the moment O'Reilly sat down, the sparks flew along with some surprising topics upon which they agreed.

"I think of you as a goon," Letterman point-blank told O'Reilly. Then, holding up the cover of O'Reilly's book, "A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity," which has a photo of O'Reilly as a boy, Letterman quipped, "I look at that and I see this sweet, adorable kid... I have a sweet adorable kid and I wonder, 'What if he too becomes a goon?'"

And Letterman launched into O'Reilly positions, such as his boycott of Sean Penn movies, giving him the ultimate back-handed compliment: "You're too smart to believe what you say."

When Letterman focused on Rush Limbaugh, implying that he's the face of the Republican party, O'Reilly alluded to the radio host's power, saying that "I don't think any Republicans or conservatives want to offend the man." And he strove to distinguish himself from Limbaugh and fellow Fox News personality Glenn Beck, claiming he's different from them because he's a journalist: "I got a degree, I paid a lot of money for... I went out, covered stories... those guys are basically entertainers... we give information"

O'Reilly also revealed that former Vice President Dick Cheney refused to come on his program, adding that he doesn't like Cheney: "We asked him a million times... he wouldn't come on."

And he laughed about the famous video of him cursing out his staff - "I have so much better stuff than that... Irish guys curse. That's in the DNA... We're loud and say bad words."

When O'Reilly called himself a journalist, I nearly fell out of bed laughing. How many times did he remind us that he has the number 1 cable news show...like 10? What an egomaniac! The reason he has such good ratings is because his fans are comprised of mostly senior citizens who are easily persuaded to believe his diatribe, and frankly don't do anything else but watch TV. This can be said of Fox's audience in general.

I am a senior citizen who wouldn't watch Fox Scare and Balanced news or programs at all. My Senior Citizen friends wouldn't either so please don't disparage the older set by lumping them all together into your stereotyped view.

Bill O'Reilly was a news anchor here in the 80's for a short time so maybe his experience in TV news makes him think he is a journalist. He is a joke.

Oreilly calls it like he sees it. he does not have an agenda and does not go easy on anyone. people call him a goon because he refuses to allow his guests to avoid the issues or questions he asks. Thats what makes him so good at what he does. he is hardworking, smart and insightful..... stop complaining, just hope you dont end up on his set with something to hide

Hahahahahahahah! "Oreilly (sic). . .does not have an agenda. ."

Hahahahahaha!

He is a walking, talking "agenda"!

He boycotts Sean Penn movies because of the guys political standpoint. He absolutely has an agenda. He once said on live television that, "most gay people don't even want to get married." He used no statistics, polling, or evidence to support that. He simply said it because he is opposed to gay marriage, and if he was an actual journalist, his position wouldn't be in the forefront of every one of his shows. It would be saved for behind the scenes. He is an entertainer first, and he has no journalistic integrity.

Wow... do the grownups know you're using the computer?

Please don't generalize me in the same way you conduct yourself denny. Go watch Keith Olbermann Denny and watch superior journalism ensue backed up by facts.

I grew up watching O'Reilly and he is terrible. There is little that he says that will hold any water.

Billo The Coward would never send his stalking worms after Letterman.

He knows that, due to some incidents in his past, Letterman probably has a security staff that would beat the living snot out of them.

Too bad.

It would make for great television....

IT COSTS 300 MILLION THAN THE PRESIDENT'S PROPOSED BUDGET.

And joe you think the president is spending us into oblivion.

This morning a Republican Congressman Ryan came on MS nb c and said that we have had no cap and trade for ten years....

Follow me and lets do some math... 8 years of Bush 2 years of Clinton. All but the last 2 years of the congress had been Republican ran. I think you are a mor on

Though when O’Reilly hit Letterman about why all the focus on Limbaugh, Letterman was stumped and at a loss for a comeback. It’s true. There are plenty of opinion shows out there, news shows, comedy shows, all of which slam to various degrees various political POVs. Why all the obsession with Limbaugh? Sure he is influential within some parts of the GOP, but don’t the others try to be just as influential in their particular circles? You bet they do. Polls are taken to see how many people hate Limbaugh. Why Limbaugh? He has a show, most who don’t listen to him probably don’t like him. Most who don’t watch American Idol probably don’t like it. Most who don’t watch CNN probably don’t like it. Why the obsession with Limbaugh? And Letterman, uncharacteristically, was at a loss. I have to admit, it made me think and wonder why.

Limbaugh says cruel and hateful things. He demeans women, Hispanics and African Americans. He loves to make people angry just because he can. I have listened to him and he is very intelligent. Unfortunately, he is deliberately divisive in order to stir up the masses.

The focus on Limbaugh is because he has a large audience of people who agree with whatever he says, and that is disturbing.

why Limbaugh? because he is dangerous..

Probably the obsession with Limpaw arises like the hideous fascination one experiences either 1) watching a bloody train wreck and/or 2) being agog with horror that a ranting, ignoramus, hate-filled racist demagogue spewing demonstrably egregious lies, disinformation and calculated, sly, self-serving, ratings-driven propaganda in the manner of past tyrannical, political madmen such as Adolf Hitler, is actually taken seriously by a certain section of your countrymen.

Because most people in this country think Limbaugh is repulsive but leaders in the GOP still keep caving in to him.

There is simply no other entertainer in the world that so blatantly pulls the strings of elected officials.

As we were sold out by rich Wall Street greed, bankers, insurance magnets and healthcare providers, we were also sold out by the news media. Barely a sign of any investigating reporting but rather innuendos, opinions and false acquisations made by all media outlets. With the 24 hour cable news cycles, they are more interested in making the news instead of reporting news. Any thing goes in order to grab the headlines. Simply pathetic
