I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Ben Affleck sat down with Jay Leno Thursday night and told a story about 3-year-old daughter Violet's introduction to a German swear word.

On to promote "State of Play," Affleck recounted taking Violet out for lunch at a Mexican restaurant and having her spill their drinks all over the table. As he jumped up and started to say "SHIT" he caught himself at the "SH" and instead yelped "SHEISSE," German for shit.

He then imitated Violet asking what it meant and repeating it over and over, louder and louder, as the restaurant looked on.

Oh, and I might add- it didn't work. Scores of years later, I'm not only still saying sh*t, I've added all kinds of new "offensive" words and phrases to my repertoire. I'm Irish and unrepentant.

Excuse my misplacement of post. This should have gone on the "washing your mouth out with soap" thread. Darn.

That would Scheiße... learn how to spell ;-)

Yeah - if you use the 'High-German' spelling. In the other German speaking countries, like Switzerland, it is written with 'ss'... ;)

Now what's going on here? Is American tv so uptight, they even beep foreign swear words?

There is a difference between a child swearing who is old enough to know not to and a toddler who is just learning to process language and repeats every sound that comes out of mommy or daddy's mouth. This is a funny story and one that has happened to MANY parents of toddlers. I remember when a bag of groceries split open and fell down the flight of stairs from our apartment while I was carrying my son inside. My exhausted, muffled 'dammit' was heard for WEEKS- usually in front of grandma, at the dinner table, etc. Other than telling my son repeatedly not to say that word and remembering not to say it myself, I would never have PUNISHED him for it. He didn't know a curse word from Shinola, so to speak!

This is 2009, right? Not 1896, when Alfred Jarry's PERE UBU could come on stage
and utter the one word, "Mierdre!!!", or in the British production, "Shite!", and the
whole audience would riot. Or is it?
