LAS VEGAS — Woody Allen is back on familiar ground with his latest movie, the first shot in his beloved New York City after four made in Europe.

And for "Whatever Works," Allen has found a suitable mouthpiece for his cynical humor in Larry David, star of "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

The film received a warm reception and a lot of laughs at a screening Thursday at ShoWest, an annual convention of theater owners. "Whatever Works" opens the Tribeca Film Festival on April 22 in advance of its theatrical debut in June.

Allen had shot most of his films in New York before doing three straight in London _ "Match Point," "Scoop" and "Cassandra's Dream" _ then making last year's "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" in Spain, which featured Allen's frequent collaborator, Scarlett Johansson.

Patricia Clarkson, who had a small role in "Vicky Cristina Barcelona" and takes on a key part in "Whatever Works," said the New York shoot was a pleasure _ since she lives there, too.

"It was so nice to be shooting with Woody Allen in New York. It was divine," said Clarkson, who introduced "Whatever Works" to the ShoWest crowd. "There were a couple of days I walked to work. It was beautiful.

"He was definitely on his own turf," Clarkson said. "When we were shooting in Barcelona, it was like shooting with Mick Jagger. I mean, the streets were lined wherever we went for Scarlett and for Woody. It was like they were rock stars. In New York, the crowds gather, but I think because it's Woody, they're actually respectful of him."

"Whatever Works" casts David as a brilliant, misanthropic physicist whose dour outlook drives him to failed suicide attempts. After splitting with his worldly wife and giving up his teaching job, he becomes a cranky chess instructor in a May-December relationship with a naive Southern beauty (Evan Rachel Wood), whose mother (Clarkson) schemes to split them up.

David delivers nicely as the sort of eccentric New Yorker that Allen has played himself in past films. But David is more than a stand-in for Allen, Clarkson said.

"They are kissing cousins. They are kindred spirits, absolutely," Clarkson said. "But Larry David is very different in the film. He's very different than he is on `Curb Your Enthusiasm.' People think he's absolutely that person on `Curb Your Enthusiasm,' but he's a different man, and he's different in the Woody Allen film.

"It's Larry's own DNA mixed with Woody's writing. Those are two powerful DNAs mixing. It's inspired."

LAS VEGAS — Woody Allen is back on familiar ground with his latest movie, the first shot in his beloved New York City after four made in Europe. And for "Whatever Works," Allen has found a suit...

I have missed a lot of his films but I'd like to see this one made in NYC just to see how his attitude has changed over the years. Except for the stuff about old men and young women--really not appealing to me for some reason.

My favorite Woody Allen film is CRIMES AND MISDEMEANORS. BULLETS OVER BROADWAY, ANNIE HALL, MANHATTAN, THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO, HANNAH AND HER SISTERS......the man has made some films that weren't so great, but even great directors make junk every now and again.....like Spielberg with ALWAYS and HOOK.

woody allen is a great director. he knows how to work with actors. he is very low key and does not do too many takes, which can be nerve racking sometimes, when you think you can give something better. but we all trust him.

How long before we get to see the new one here in the boonies of northern California?

Woody Allen has made some of the most innovative and unique movies.

Sleeper
Zelig
Purple Rose of Cairo
Mighty Aphrodite
Hannah and Her Sisters

I can go on and on. You only need to look at his long list of films to see the brilliance in his film making. For those who have said that his movies can be formulaic, they only have to look a bit deeper.

It's amazing how people project these fantasies on to their heroes and then crucify them when they fail to live up to them.

Great people are almost never good people. The only difference is whose laundry gets aired and whose remains protected. Most of these celebrities you visit with in the tabloids and on talk shows are presenting a carefully scripted image. They know how to sell themselves. They're actors for chrissakes! It's all illusion.

So, come on, now, he did not marry his daughter! She wasn't even his adopted daughter. She was his girlfriend's adopted daughter. Not cool at all. In fact, down right inconsiderate. But, who the hell are we to know the inner workings of their emotional lives? His relationship with Soon Yi has lasted longer than any of his others.

This post-feminist double standard is getting old. We're supposed to cheer "you go girl cougars" but the castration shears come flying out when an old guy finds a young woman.
Like she'd be better off with a young man her own age because we all know how well young men treat women. And if you want to point the dysfunctional finger, flick it over Demi and Kuchie boy's way.

Love is such a maddening, nonsensical and transitory blessing, get it where you can and hang on as long as you can. And stay out of the love lives of others. We have no way of knowing what really goes on.

So, leave them the **** alone!

Excellent post, could not agree more. The few times I have seen her, she seems like a remarkable woman, well educated and mature.

They semm happy and well suited to each other, what more could you wish for them.

I've seen them together on the streets of NYC. They didn't look happy to me at all. However, there were no cameras in view, so...

It's amazing how people can defend his marrying his longtime girlfriends adopted daughter. What he did was reprehensible. Not only did he betray Mia, he betrayed his children he shared with her. But Woody Allen believes he's above it. What an odd little man. I don't see the appeal at all.

Woody Allen is one of America's greatest popular artists. But, his best days are long past. I think it's fair to say that great artists have a single period of relevance, when what they produce reflects the zeitgeist while at the same time blazing paths into the future. That time for Woody Allen was the 1970's. He's essentially 30 years past his prime. Moreover, according to medical science, by the time we're in our 70's, our brains have shrunk such that they're the size of a 3 year old's. Artists should be judged by the work done at the peak of their powers, and by that measure, Woody Allen is a inescapably-important figure in American popular art.

So, he shouldn't be making movies anymore because he's past his alleged "prime"? Or because he's in his 70s? (Wonder how old the poster is....) Should only Seth Rogen and those mumblecore dudes get to make movies because they're not old? True, Woody hasn't made a film as hilarious as, say, Sleeper or Love & Death in a long time, but his movies are still damn good. Match Point, Cassandra's Dream, those are both fine little movies. And Hollywood Ending was brilliiant.

And if you're suggesting that a 3-year-old could make a Woody Allen movie because their brains are the same size, well jeez, I don't know where to begin.

Memo to Scorsese, Spielberg, Lynch, Coen Bros: Your days are numbered.

Did I say he shouldn't be making movies anymore? My point simply was that his best days are behind him. And then I offered reasons why that might be. Moreover, Allen's legacy isn't going to be Sleeper and Love and Death. He will rightly be remembered for the mature social satires Annie Hall and Manhattan. The late-career movies you mention teeter awfully close to dreck...I don't even know how to respond to your nonsensical comment about 3 year olds...And finally, speaking of Scorsese, like Allen, his best days were in the 70's; Spielberg might be a great moviemaker, but he's largely to blame for the blockbuster mentality of movies today; and Lynch's last great movie was Blue Velvet in 1986. Only the Coen Bros. still make remarkable movies. You might ask yourself why you have such a difficult time accepting the inevitably of decline.

Woody Allen is amazing. He has been making films for over 50 years and, with maybe the exception of the 90's, they have been great movies.

Woody's work is tired, redundant and lame. The old man and young woman motiff and his pseudo-intellectualism just tranlates into predictable dung.

Woody should just remain hidden in his creepy world as he hasn't been relevant for a long, long time.

I'm sure the only ones who enjoy his work also share his dull and sad fantasies.

The same stories and lines again and again. Like Plath, he is perfect for the undergraduate. A healthy mind outgrows him.

"No, we've always been very close."

"Your so cerebral."

"Your so neurotic."

"What did you want to do?"

When he married Soon Yi, I boycotted his films and have never seen another nor will I ever see another as long as I live. There are some things that are just beyond the pale and that was one of them.

Besides, after "Sleeper" in 1973 with the Volkswagon that started at the turn of the key after 200 years and the orgasmatron, I thought everything he did thereafter was self-indulgent schlock. Just my opinion.

Your loss. I love his work more than about anything. Match Point and Vicky Cristina Barcelona were inspired. Cassandra's Dream is the only one I haven't enjoyed. Celebrity was so so. I like the later chatty ones rather than the early gag-oriented ones. I like the little ones like Melinda and Melinda which isn't supposed to be a great film--just a meditation.

As for Soon Yi--I have a hard time getting worked up about it. It was stupid and wrong for it to happen the way it did, but she was an adult and he was not even married to Mia. Their lives.

Agatha, you're right. It's their lives. But somethings should not be done. Allen's dam* lucky it was Mia he did this sh*t to, because if it was another kind of woman, I promise you, Allen wouldn't have gotten away with it.

Film directors being self indulgent? Wow you're a genius!!!

Last Woody flic I saw was so horrificly offensive (about a blind film director) that I can't bring myself to see another though they may be critically acclaimed, the whole taking naked pictures of and marriying his "daughter" was what really put me off him.

Also schlock, can't remember name of it either- and I am sure it was long before the public career suicide - did you have a point to your question? Did you intend to put me in my place if I admit to seeing a recent Gibson film. I am not sure how your "question" is a suitable retort to my statement.

Years ago I was a huge Woody Allen fan. I even went to see Shadows and Fog. The guy was a cinematic genius. I think it's messed up that he married Mia's daughter. But I'm probably more pissed at Soon Yi for dissing her mom. You don't diss your mom. I can't say that I've seen much of his new movies, but I still love the old stuff.
