GRAHAM, Wash. — A man who fatally shot his five children and killed himself had just discovered his wife was leaving him for another man, authorities said Sunday.

The bodies of James Harrison's children, ages 7 to 16, were found with multiple gunshot wounds Saturday in the family's mobile home, most of them in their beds. Harrison's body had been found earlier in the day with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, behind the wheel of his idling car.

The night before, the father and his eldest daughter went in search of his wife, Angela Harrison. The daughter used a GPS feature in her mother's cell phone to find her with another man at a convenience store in nearby Auburn, said Ed Troyer, spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff.

The woman told her husband she was not coming home, and was leaving him for the man with her at the store. The father and the daughter left, distraught, Troyer said.

Sometime after the children went to sleep, he shot each of them multiple times. Four died in their beds. The fifth was found in the bathroom, surrounded by signs of violent struggle.

"He wanted the kids dead," Troyer said. "It wasn't like he shot a few rounds. He shot several rounds."

Investigators believe he then returned to the area near the convenience store looking for his wife. His body was found near the store, Troyer said.

"We think he was going to go back to kill the wife," Troyer said. "He probably didn't find her and realized the gravity of what he'd done and shot himself."

Story continues below

Several weapons were found in the home.

Authorities have not released the names of the family. Relatives identified the couple as Angela and James Harrison and the children as Maxine, Samantha, Heather, Jamie and James.

Ryan Peden, Maxine's classmate, had said she told him Friday night that her parents had gotten into a fight and her mother had left. The father followed the mother and tried to get her to return, Peden said.

"Maxine texted me at 11 p.m. Friday. She said: "I'm tired of crying. I'm going to bed,'" he said. His text to her the next day went unanswered.

Candy Johnson, an aunt of the mother, described Harrison as a strict, controlling husband and father who didn't allow his wife to make decisions without asking him first.

"My niece has been so controlled from the time she was young," Johnson said, adding that Harrison had impregnated Angela when she was 13.

State child welfare officials put Harrison on a parenting plan in 2007 after a "minor assault" on one of the children, Troyer said, adding that the father agreed to the plan and the case was closed.

Ron Vorak, who lives across the street from the family's trailer at the Deer Run mobile home park, said he called 911 at about 3:20 p.m. Saturday after one of the family's relatives couldn't get anyone to answer the door.

"He knocked on the door, and knocked on a couple of windows," Vorak said of the relative. "He walked around the side of the house, looked into the window. He could see somebody laying on the bed."

The home, about 15 southeast of Tacoma, became a makeshift memorial Sunday as neighbors left cards and bouquets of flowers. School officials said they were arranging to have grief counselors available when teachers and students returned Monday.

"We're going to try to get through this the best we can given the circumstances," said Jeff Davis, Orting School District superintendent. "In a small community like this, we know these kids. Teachers know the kids. All the kids know the kids."

Davis said the eldest, Maxine, was a 10th grader at Orting High School. Jamie was in the eighth grade and her sister Samantha in the sixth grade at Orting Middle School. The two youngest, Heather and James, were second-graders at Orting Primary School.

The father worked as a diesel mechanic, and the mother works at Wal-Mart, said another of Angela Harrison's aunts, Penny Flansburg. Troyer, however, said the father worked as a security guard at a casino.

One neighbor, Sheree Lund, who lives in the mobile home park, signed a community notebook left in front of the family's house. She wrote: "God Bless the five little ones. God bring peace to Mom."

Evil is incomprehensible, said the great Voltaire after the Lisbon earthquake in 1470? I find those words giving expression to my own emotions in this world of constant suicide bombings, attacks on innocent nations such as happened in the Iraq war, and the senseless mass murders that have become the custom of the disgruntled, mentally ill and failed members of the US society.

May we all find our way through this morass of confusion, cynicism, evil, apathy and downright degradation of society, where we are measured by only our bank accounts.

Can I say something here...first off please educate yourself about weapons ...it may be why we have some problems.....anyone... over 21 in most states..who is not a felon and has no history of mental illness that can be drawn upon can purchase a firearm in the US.

There is no licensing nor registration or clearinghouse that keeps track of how many or where or who owns any firearm or ammo.

Anyone who meets above requirements can purchase at any gun show or gun shop a so called assault weapon...in semi-auto form.

A person can be federally lic. to purchase and own automatic weapons.

An assault weapon is defined as a semi or automatic weapon holding a large amount of ammunition.

The toughest gun laws are in the city of NY...if what happened to Placcido Burress happened anywhere else in the US he would probably be facing a misdemeanor.

A semi-auto assault rifle can be made into a automatic fairly easily, but it is against federal law.

To carry a concealed weapon in all states you do need a license...Anyone who meets the above requirements can in most states with a firearms course can obtain a lic.

"Can I say something here...first off please educate yourself about weapons "

Coming from you, that is flippin hilarious.

"anyone... over 21 in most states..who is not a felon and has no history of mental illness that can be drawn upon can purchase a firearm in the US"

Federal law:

Puchase from a dealer -

Handguns = must be 21 or older

Long guns (rifles and shotguns) = must be 18 or older

Private purchase/possession -

Handguns = must be 18 or older

Long guns = no age limit

"An assault weapon is defined as a semi or automatic weapon holding a large amount of ammunition."

Incorrect. According to ethe previous federal definition, assault weapons are 19 specific semi-auto firearms or any semi-auto firearm with specific features.

"A semi-auto assault rifle can be made into a automatic fairly easily,"

Not as easily as most people claim. If they can, the BATFE bans them.

"To carry a concealed weapon in all states you do need a license"

Not true either. In Alaska and Vermont, no permit is required. In Michigan and Illinois, there is no concealed carry allowed.

The United States has a big issue with mental illness. Sure guns are abused-don't deny that. But people who are effectively treated might be less likely to do things like this if we actually took care of them. That's not to say all can be helped or would seek help...

You bring up an interesting point regarding mental illness in the US. All one needs to do is go back 30 years to understand why it's such a huge problem: Ronald Reagan's regime ensured that the mentally ill would be forever marginalized in the US when his administration effectively closed mental hospitals and jettisoned the mentally ill onto the streets. This was disaster to those who truly needed (need) help and it sent a message that mental illness would be forever relegated to the back of the line of national health issues.

Once again, another successful screw-up by the neo-fascists of the political right in this country.

Few are aware of Reagan's folly in this critical area. His policies also ushered in another of our great shames- rampant homelessness.

This man took and passed a parenting class!!
I think it is time to reevaluate the parenting class.

I'm thinking that "Oh, and by the way, parents... don't shoot the kids" is a parenting tip the teacher of the class thought went without saying.

Rather than replay the guns vs no guns debate with no positive outcome to stem the tide against gun violence, itsn't it wiser to educate the public on volatile situations that can trigger violent behavior -- assaultive, suicidal or homicidal. Here are some to be alert to for your safety and that of others: End of a marriage or relationship, loss of a business/job, loss of financial wellbeing, loss of stature, charge w/ a major crime, major failure in one's own eyes or the eyes of others, mental illness (e.g., depression, psychosis or trauma), victim of violent crime, assaultive history, victim of bullying, rejection by an esteemed peer or peer group, death of a spouse/child/parent, violence toward animals. Contact your local mental health assn or psychological association for help. Most communities have a crisis help line also.

Great comment ...the guns are already here and nothing can be done about it...we can call for all the bans and such but it would be like banning maryjane.

Good rule for leaving an abusive husband: find a safe place for you and your children and get out BEFORE you tell him you are leaving.

You know, that's what I thought too. A neighbor had previously called CPS because he head the father yelling at the kids through closed doors. I would think multiple gunshots would have been heard by somebody.

I don't get why he shot the kids. Didn't he care about them at all or just his own ego?

sounds like he was a control freak. I imagine he went berzerk when someone cut him off in traffic, too. Improper coping mechanisms are rampant in our society. Postal and Ballistic are common place adjectives. How sad is that?

This is very sad...and, of course, it doesn't just happen in America. But one thing that really mystifies a lot of people outside the USA is the love affair with and the easy access to guns.
It seems you are in more danger from your own folk (guns and bankers) than any perceived enemies!

This increasing trend - of fathers killing their families, and then themselves - point to one stark phenomena . For whatever reason ( I'm not a sociologist), many men seem to believe that their families are their property, to do with as they will. As if they are unable to love them as separate beings. Quite a troublesome view.

I guess my impression of Western society as individualistic is deeply flawed. After all, here we are, witnessing one man after another, wholesale killing their families when they can't get their way, whether with their wives or with society.

"We did all we could to help these kids," Raymond Bader said. "We tried to protect these kids. We did what we could."

Candy Johnson, an aunt of the mother, described Harrison as a strict, controlling husband and father who didn't allow his wife to make decisions without asking him first.

"My niece has been so controlled from the time she was young," Johnson said, adding that Harrison had impregnated the mother when she was 13.

I have seen this so many times.
Barefoot, pregnant under a control freak's constant watch.

Neighbors get involved.
"Authorities" stand back - not wanting to 'interfere'.
Restraining orders issued.
To no avail.

Women and kids dead - male kllls himself conveniently afterward, so as not to be held accountable.

Repeat, ad naseum.

It's going to be a long, hot summer.

Having dealt with the victims of such people, as a medic, I am very aware of the traits. When I find out about a controlling, hot head who owns guns, I make sure that the authorities are aware. Not that they can take action, but so that if anything happens at that address the know what to expect. And maybe head off a disaster. Always on the look out for wife abusers.

Forget about the whole debate about gun. Look at the social issue, if someone gets pregnant at 13, you almost doomed to the fact as you mature and realized you wanted to take a different path with your life. Seriously people need to stop having kid and get stuck in a situation that gets increasing complicated to be out of.

The killer was 34 years old and had a 17 year old child, and four other children. He was abusive to his kids and his wife. He never learned otherwise. And he had guns.

why is an underdeveloped kid with 5 other kids in the house and tendencies to anger permitted to have a gun?

mental health, family planning, anger management, education... if gun lobbyists would fight half as hard for any of these other issues perhaps we wouldn't have so many instances in which we question why such people have a right have guns...
