GRAHAM, Wash. — A man who fatally shot his five children and killed himself had just discovered his wife was leaving him for another man, authorities said Sunday.

The bodies of James Harrison's children, ages 7 to 16, were found with multiple gunshot wounds Saturday in the family's mobile home, most of them in their beds. Harrison's body had been found earlier in the day with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, behind the wheel of his idling car.

The night before, the father and his eldest daughter went in search of his wife, Angela Harrison. The daughter used a GPS feature in her mother's cell phone to find her with another man at a convenience store in nearby Auburn, said Ed Troyer, spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff.

The woman told her husband she was not coming home, and was leaving him for the man with her at the store. The father and the daughter left, distraught, Troyer said.

Sometime after the children went to sleep, he shot each of them multiple times. Four died in their beds. The fifth was found in the bathroom, surrounded by signs of violent struggle.

"He wanted the kids dead," Troyer said. "It wasn't like he shot a few rounds. He shot several rounds."

Investigators believe he then returned to the area near the convenience store looking for his wife. His body was found near the store, Troyer said.

"We think he was going to go back to kill the wife," Troyer said. "He probably didn't find her and realized the gravity of what he'd done and shot himself."

Several weapons were found in the home.

Authorities have not released the names of the family. Relatives identified the couple as Angela and James Harrison and the children as Maxine, Samantha, Heather, Jamie and James.

Ryan Peden, Maxine's classmate, had said she told him Friday night that her parents had gotten into a fight and her mother had left. The father followed the mother and tried to get her to return, Peden said.

"Maxine texted me at 11 p.m. Friday. She said: "I'm tired of crying. I'm going to bed,'" he said. His text to her the next day went unanswered.

Candy Johnson, an aunt of the mother, described Harrison as a strict, controlling husband and father who didn't allow his wife to make decisions without asking him first.

"My niece has been so controlled from the time she was young," Johnson said, adding that Harrison had impregnated Angela when she was 13.

State child welfare officials put Harrison on a parenting plan in 2007 after a "minor assault" on one of the children, Troyer said, adding that the father agreed to the plan and the case was closed.

Ron Vorak, who lives across the street from the family's trailer at the Deer Run mobile home park, said he called 911 at about 3:20 p.m. Saturday after one of the family's relatives couldn't get anyone to answer the door.

"He knocked on the door, and knocked on a couple of windows," Vorak said of the relative. "He walked around the side of the house, looked into the window. He could see somebody laying on the bed."

The home, about 15 southeast of Tacoma, became a makeshift memorial Sunday as neighbors left cards and bouquets of flowers. School officials said they were arranging to have grief counselors available when teachers and students returned Monday.

"We're going to try to get through this the best we can given the circumstances," said Jeff Davis, Orting School District superintendent. "In a small community like this, we know these kids. Teachers know the kids. All the kids know the kids."

Davis said the eldest, Maxine, was a 10th grader at Orting High School. Jamie was in the eighth grade and her sister Samantha in the sixth grade at Orting Middle School. The two youngest, Heather and James, were second-graders at Orting Primary School.

The father worked as a diesel mechanic, and the mother works at Wal-Mart, said another of Angela Harrison's aunts, Penny Flansburg. Troyer, however, said the father worked as a security guard at a casino.

One neighbor, Sheree Lund, who lives in the mobile home park, signed a community notebook left in front of the family's house. She wrote: "God Bless the five little ones. God bring peace to Mom."

More gun violence. When will this stop?? Canada is laughing it's you know what off at us savage Americans as we speak.

No. Canada is definitely NOT laughing at the slaughter of 5 innocent children. We have a fantastic sense of humour but there's nothing in this story that is remotely funny.

Canada is not laughing. We have had our share of shootings in schools as well. It has to do with the lack of mental health care and awareness. The only thing different is that someone in the U.S. can get a gun a lot easier regardless of his mental state. Mental health care is a problem because the system is not working the way it should. The general public doesn't know enough about it. People don't know the signs and symptoms or what to do if they know someone is having difficulty or is in despair. We have to inform ourselves, keep watch on ourselves our families, and in our communities and insist that the system does what is supposed to do.

Mental health problems in the U.S. still carries some stigma. It is still believed that if you have mental health problems, you have a moral and ethical obligation to shut up and suck up to the system, and quit griping.

I don't think anybody up here is laughing. We had 4 RCMP officers murdered in Alberta last year by a violent psychopath waiting in ambush. On Thursday I was down in the city and coincidentally right next to where I parked the yellow tape was out for a domestic homicide. They happen here as well just not as often. What keeps our per capita rate lower is guns are a bit harder to get - and not held with the same reverence. I think the real difference is a value system that isn't quite as greedy or into "me" orientated individualism at the expense of others - and there is less sanctioned promotion of hatred. Our talk radio is no more worthwhile than yours but it's less vitriolic. Toronto, nightime population of 2.5 million had about 85 homicides last year. About half were shootings of and by gang members. The per capita Toronto homicide rate per 100,000 is 3.4 compared with Philadelphia's rate of 27.8 per 100,000 - and Philly is about the same size. Some depressed areas like Camden NJ with a 2007 per capita rate of 41:100,000 are much higher.

You just don't understand, when life is frustrating and I'm a failure, my AK-47, Russian Assault weapon makes me important.

Are you the reason I need six thousand rounds of ammunition, well are you!

I am of the opinion that there is a sickness running through our society, one that puts a price on human life. And that price is often less than nothing. These acts are the consequence of a merciless capitalistic thinking at its very worst. Not capitalism itself, but the bullsh*t "all or nothing" capitalism that has flowered here over the last 30 years. Coupled with the Bush-like "do what I say or I'll kill you" morality that has insinuated itself into many people's personal code. This sh*t doesn't happen so much in other countries.
I fear for my family.

To clarify: Bush morality = Killing as a valid method of conflict resolution.

Blaming guns is as shortsighted as the "war on terror". There was another man who beheaded his child with a knife. I am far from a gun nut (indeed, having moved to Europe last year, I was forced to sell the one I did own). Ours (US) is a culture that has come to worship and glorify not only guns, but violence, money, selfishness, and greed. This is a broad societal problem that requires a sea-change in terms of child rearing, values, respect for others and the elderly and vulnerable, a rejection of violent cultural elements wherever they may be. That includes our governmental policy of preemptive wars and the largest defense budget in the known universe. This is a problem that has been decades in the making. It will not be solved by enacting a new law.

Agree...but we did start out violently, didn't we? And christianity, the dominant religious expression, loves the idea of being "conquerers" as you can see in their glorification of victory, and their adoration of the blood and gore of the crucifixion.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:45 AM on 04/05/2009

Christianity isn't the only one. Actually, religion is often used by people in power to persuade others to do what they want. Religion isn't the problem, it's the following blindly of leaders of religion without regard for what is right or wrong.
The most ridiculus is the reason for war. For example,God gave us this land. In the name of God we do this. God wants us to do this. When it comes to war and violence, leave God out of it. War is man made.

no to both questions and your simplistic solution. the man killed his children and himself. this was not something that had much to do with society at large. uncle jimbo's analysis below is much closer to getting to the reality than yours, though in this case, the fellow was obviously hellbent on carrying out the tragedy.

Happiness is a Warm Gun! Bang,Bang,Shoot,Shoot! America's Mental Health is the Key! But someone yesterday on the Pittsburg thread said all guns should be Taxed and Insurred (Pay insurrence like for an automobile)! That could work, then maybe only the rich would kill each other! I don't know I'm at a loss!

Everyone has their agenda and some don't understand the mental health issue but you are right mental health is the key. There will be many more cases like these as people break under stress. We have to be our brother's keeper. It is avoidable.

Again, I say, it is often difficult for people to get mental health. Even the mental health agencies are so overbooked, especially these days that the person most in need may have to wait for weeks to get his or her initial appointment, and that might not be soon enough.

The health insurance companies (and all their varieties) will not cover mental health visits, or will not cover it equally with physical health problems, if they cover it at all. To the health insurance agencies, mental health problems are just goldbricking to get out of work or some other obligation, or as an excuse. If nothing else, it is seen as a moral failure. The person in need of mental health services is told to buck up, shut up, suck up because it is more than likely they are faking it in the minds of a lot of the public and nearly all of the health insurance agencies. That is why you usually have to pay out of pocket for your "depression."
To the insurance companies, "depression" is seen as poor sport pouting, and if you have bi-polar or anything else where the brain biochemistry is probably genetic, you are completely out of luck because it is your darn fault you were born with the problem, according to the health insurance companies, and often the prejudices of the public. If you were too lazy as a fetus to reject the bad genes, you are still to blame.

This is part of the down payment on the national refusal to confront our problems squarely and courageously. Taking the easy way in the short run leads to disaster in the long run. We are beginning to exact the results of corrupt and timid leadership for too long.

How did we get here? Not because of guns!

We got here because of shrill shills like Glen Beck preaching violent revolution, with Chuck Norris at his side.

We got here because of the venom that has been spewed for over a decade by Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, Rush Limpbaugh, and the vast Reichwing media conspiracy powered and funded by your friendly bankers and corporations (paid for by their tax sheltered off shore accounts).

We got here because television has become a swamp, with viewers mired in the muck of propaganda like '24', that was literally designed to support the pro-torture, anti-Constitution views of the right wing; shows that teach abominable values : self-serving, self-centered, back-stabbing screeching, all with the same pattern at the end, the 'winners' or the 'judges' make the 'losers' stand there and while they are humiliated and excoriated over being such total, worthless worm losers.

The TV in our household is pretty much used to watch a movie now and then, or an episode of House. It is certainly not used for news (there is none on TV anymore), or to watch any of the crap that passes for 'entertainment'. Some friends brought up MTV the other day, and said they had heard MTV might start playing music videos instead of the crap shows they now play all day long. I did not know, I have had MTV deprogrammed for at least 10 years.

No. We got here because we as a nation have turned to government to solve problems of our own making. And who is government? People, just like this murderer. People and or persons can not bring other people peace or serenity. People have a way of disappointing other people. Maybe we were too quick to trash the Commandments while hoping people would just know them automatically. To lie, steel, cheat, even murder seems to come more automatically to people who can't give themselves to a loving God.

The Depression is starting to unravel the social fabric.

After incidents like this, I'm always surprised how people try to look for reasons why the murderer did what he did. That is worse than irrelevant. It is misdirection, to divert attention away from the real issue of the proliferation of guns. There is no pattern of behavior that could predict who might actually go over the edge, versus someone who's just pissed-off about something, which is just a normal part of life. It's the easy availability of guns which has allowed mass-murder to become so common in America.

The Second Amendment was written for people who carried single-shot muzzle-loaders in a frontier society, where they were being chased around by redcoats and Indians. It was never meant for the carriage of modern high-powered weaponry in a largely urban setting, in a heavily-policed country with a stable government.

Take away the guns, and you will end the mass-murder. Until then, there is always a risk that if you go to school or church, or the grocery store, you may not come back.

Yeah..let's continue to pass those laws that allow anyone, anywhere to carry guns into churches, casinos, taverns..just like the good old west days...and then let's resurrect Heston to ride that chariot in the unabashed declaration that we all need sub machine guns to hunt for Bambi.

I'm for everyone having a gun....just make it a business. $1,000 a year in license fees for anything bigger than a 22 and that includes the Boy Scouts who teach 10 year olds to shoot 12 gauge shotguns. Money talks in America. For years people stated they wanted to boycott the price of gas. Only when it got to $4.00 a gallon did use dramatically drop proving the consumer owns the markets. Outrageous license fees will stop the proliferation of guns just like outrageous taxes will stop the proliferation of smokers.

Depression, anger, and anxiety affect men and women differently. Most often, women turn it inwards, men act outward in a violent way. However, Andrea Yates' killed her children because she thought they were ruined because of her failure as a mother. When the thought processes are messed up these things happen.
