UPDATE 4/13: Diana Palin, half-sister of Todd Palin, pleaded not guilty to burglary charges at the criminal superior courthouse in Palmer, Alaska Monday, People reports:

Diana, 35, is facing four felony counts of burglary and theft and four misdemeanor counts of criminal trespassing and theft stemming from two alleged break-ins at the same property on March 31 and April 2.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Police say Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin's sister-in-law is accused of breaking into the same home twice to steal money.

Deputy Wasilla Police Chief Greg Wood says 35-year-old Diana Palin was arrested Thursday after she was confronted by the homeowner in the governor's hometown of Wasilla. She faces two counts of felony burglary and misdemeanor counts of criminal trespass and theft.

Wood says tire tracks and shoe prints tied Palin to another break-in Tuesday in which $400 was taken. Police have not tied Palin to another burglary at the home last week.

Governor spokeswoman Meghan Stapleton says Palin is the half sister of the governor's husband and the family has no comment.

Diana Palin's husband says his wife has a court-appointed attorney.

Family values is a bumper sticker concept that drove the conservatives into a culture war that blamed society for individual irresponsibility, then asked the government to intervene on behalf of morality.

Maybe now, America will decide that morality begins at home. Parenting is a fundamental responsibility that can not be delegated to the public schools. Community strengthens family life and responds to family needs better than government. Churches, Synagogues, Mosques and Temples are rich in diversity yet similar is purpose.

If America spends the next decade trying to redefine American values in terms reproductive issues and marriage, our children will think that we had our heads in the sand while the global economy shut us out.

Let's hope that the media lifts us up from this dreary coverage of unimportant details of the Palin family and prepares us for the tough job ahead as each one of us struggles to understand what kind of world we are leaving for future generations.

Kudos to you for raising the BIG issues that really confront us. I think a lot of us spend time on topics like this because they remind us how close Palin came to the vice presidential mansion. It is truly scary to imagine her trying to wrestle with economics, global finance and threats from irrational leaders in North Korea and Iran when she can't govern a state of 700K residents.

You are right to remind us of the importance of our need to focus on global issues. Our future world is being defined by our present ability to grapple with the global recession, fundamentalism of all stripes, fragile countries where terrorists hold sway, our declining environment ....Let's keep our collective efforts focused on the issues that will define the 21st century.

Don't know if you've heard, but Palin wants to open a defense fund (via donations) because she has run up a bill of close to $500K defending herself against numerous ethics allegations. Of course to Palin, all the accusations are "frivolous" from "haters", but she fails to examine how her own behavior has led to her current mess legally.
