Just curious how many people here boycott the use of gasoline because of the laws oppressing women in Saudi Arabia?

These are the problems you encounter when you accept the notion that you can rebuild a nation, and rebuild it in your own image while conveniently ignoring the cultural and social forces at work.

Just one more example of why religion needs to be eradicated from the planet. These people actually have to REVIEW a law with religious leaders before they can say whether it violates the Constitutional rights guaranteed to Afghan women.

I'm sorry, I am as liberal as they come, but when it comes to religion, I refuse to be "politically correct". I do not respect it, it is a waste of valuable resources, and has always restricted the rights of women (and children as the children are brainwashed at an early age to believe this stuff).

This is one of the problems with Hamid Karzai; what is there to review about this "law" either he's for it or he's not!

The same type of un-willingness takes place in other Countries also by the Leaders of those Countries.

Well, let's face is this is not about rape... Here is what I thought was the most interesting sentence.

"They would also be forbidden from leaving their homes except for "legitimate purposes," the agency said."

That is horrible and a few other sentences about education were horrible also... These are the people who KILL WOMEN for being raped... This is CONTROL and DENIGRATION of women, it is about a women being OBJECTIFIED (you know like in Playboy, turning women into sex objects)...It totallly contradicts HUMAN RIGHTS.

Although I find the laws and religious views extreme in Afghanistan (As well as the entire MidEast), this is a further example of our interfering where we have no right, or any business--This is further forcing our views on those of another country. We would not, and have never, tolerated that from any other country. That is one of the reasons we are hated. This arrogant smugness of we know what is right is becoming our downfall all over the entire globe, and those in the WH just don't get it. This particular issue is much ado about nothing when there are real issues of corporate rape and genocide committed by our own corporations in countries we have propped up, funded, blackmailed and bribed.

Corporate Rape in America, ENRON sucking $60 billion from California, shutting down plants and raising rates 20 times, not 20% by 20 times or 2000 percent and then laughing ALLL the way to the BANK.... and genocide, throwing 2.4 million households into foreclosure last year alone, that is horrible ...and tell me how that relates to FAMILY VALUES or American Values....

It is going to break my heart if Al Franken gets the boot from the Supremes....but it will not surprise me one iota....

In general, you're right. A sovereign nation's laws are its own, no matter how repugnant we find them, we have no place in just involving ourselves in their own sovereign matters.

However, this is completely different because Karzai still needs a lot of money and troops from America and Europe to retain power.

European nations who are stonewalling Afghanistan right now aren't saying "Oh Afghanistan, you better do what we say or we'll destroy you because we don't like your laws."

They're just saying "We'll be damned if we're going to send troops and money to prop up a government which enacts these sorts of laws."

Did this outrageous news of 100 lashes and jail time on a gang-raped female victim in Shariah Law Saudi Arabia made headlines in the US?

Betcha if Afghanistan is swimming in OIL (like SA)....this Afghan rape law would be a no news item in America.

The hypocrisy of our US mainstream media...

While I am opposed to the so called "Rape legalization" (A term I find a little misleading as to what the law actualy states) I can at least understand it considering where it came from.

These people live in a culture and religion that dictates peoples lives. I am betting the law was not made out of hate for women, but more to define a limit of what a married man should be allowed to expect. While this obviously is wrong on a few levels, it explains the action

While that is of course repugnant to us who live under the US constitution, it was likely not meant to be as bad as it seems to us.

The more I see religion in polotics, the less I think it belongs there. I say this as a Christian.

we should just take away all the muslim women from that world and take them to america. slowly the culture will die, or change to bring them back. However we can teach them to be independent and live happy lives.

if you can't play nice take it away.

Virtually every middle-eastern leader has a Western education, and for a period of time was totally immersed in Western culture. There is nothing about this or Sharia that Karzai does not understand as being contrary to international standards of human rights. Why does he think his government exists if not to protect and defend the rights of the people? Are there no Ataturks in the middle-east?

As far as I am concerned, the barbarians are in charge there no matter who you appease. Just stop sending them money.

As a female American Taxpayer, my $ are being spent in Afganistan and they need to protect the women and young girls of that country. Otherwise no US $ should be spent to prop them up.

We are in Afghanistan because it is the country of Al Quaeda's resurrection. Those who attacked the US trained etc... in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Russia could not defeat the Afghans, it is not in our capability, weakened physically and financially by the war in Iraq. The US needs to address the issue of terrorism around the world and in the public forum. It is not only the marital rape laws in Afghan that need to be revisited, its the public flogging of women in SWAT that speaks of the shame that is really Islam. Since when is rape (which is an act of violence against women in or out of marriage) and public flogging demonstrating that Islam protects and respects women?? SHAME, SHAME ON ISLAM!!

I watched that video of the girl getting beaten. All I could think watching that was the ..shall we say...EXTREME state of excitement the flogger was in. He was having way too good a time, and the poor girl's cries just inflamed him even more.

If Muslims want the world to think well of them..and I can't say most of us do at this time...they'd better start cleaning up these atrocities. And I don't buy the excuse "Well, it isn't our religion, these are tribal customs".

Baloney.
