Phillip Myers, 48th Civil Engineer Squadron, with a Bronze Star medal during an Airmen’s Call at RAF Lakenheath, England. Myers, 30, of Hopewell Va, died April 4, 2009 in Afghanistan from wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device. DOVER, Del. — For the first time since an 18-year ban on news coverage of returning war dead was lifted, the media witnessed the arrival Sunday night of a soldier killed overseas.

After receiving permission from family members, the military opened Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to the press. An eight-member team wearing white gloves and camouflage battle fatigues carried the body of 30-year-old Air Force Staff Sgt. Phillip Myers of Hopewell, Va., off a military jet in a solemn ceremony on a cool, clear night.

Myers was killed April 4 near Helmand province, Afghanistan, when he was hit with an improvised explosive device, the Department of Defense said.

The ceremony under the yellowish haze of airport floodlights took about 20 minutes with Myers' wife and other family members in attendance.

Myers was a member of the 48th Civil Engineer Squadron with the Royal Air Force in Lakenheath, England, one of the bases the U.S. Air Force uses in the country. He was awarded a Bronze Star for bravery last year in recognition of his efforts in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the Department of Defense said.

The new Pentagon policy gives families a choice of whether to admit the press to ceremonies at Dover, home to the nation's largest military mortuary and the entry point to the U.S. for service personnel killed overseas.

Critics of the previous policy had said the government was trying to hide the human cost of war.

President Barack Obama had asked for a review of the ban, and Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said that the blanket restriction made him uncomfortable. The administration will let families decide whether to allow photographs.

For example, if several caskets arrive on the same flight, news coverage will be allowed only for those whose families have given permission.

The ban was put in place by President George H.W. Bush in 1991, at the time of the Persian Gulf War. From the start, it was cast as a way to shield grieving families.

There have been several exceptions since then, most notably in 1996 when President Bill Clinton attended the arrival of the remains of Commerce Secretary Ron Brown and 32 others killed in a plane crash in Croatia. In 2000, the Pentagon distributed photographs of the arrival of remains of those killed in the bombing of the USS Cole and in 2001, the Air Force distributed a photograph of the remains of a victim of the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon.

One objection to lifting the ban had been that if the media were present, some families might feel obligated to come to Dover for the brief, solemn ritual in which honor guards carry the caskets off a plane. Few families now choose to attend, in part because doing so means leaving home and the support system of friends at a difficult time. The sudden trip can also be expensive and logistically difficult to arrange.

Throughout history the mighty military powers of the world have exploited the poor, less educated class of individuals to fight their wars. The old ways of taking young men and women(the women for other reasons) by force or threat of violence or a barter with a parent or guardian or master. Being shanghaied was a popular method of crewing a ship or recruits for the French Foreign Legion. Since the 20th century we here in the USA have used a more sophisticated, cunning technique to enlist the young of today to join the military. We dangle the proverbial carrot ie. (education, money, travel, career, retirement at a young age, ) This all sounds great but for one thing these niceties shouldn't be a prize or reward for serving your country. When you look at the makeup of the Congress of the United States, mostly millionair's, very few have children serving in the military ,Why? their kids don't need money for education, travel, career, retirement. If Congress or the President declares war there should be a federal law that makes it manditory that their children of military age who meet the minimum standards ,must join and serve side by side with their fellow countrymen and women. No more wars of convenience but of necessity!!!

It sounds like a sound solution to me but they would have make that law & do you think they would? I don't think they should have the power to give themselves benefits or raises either. How do you change these things when people that need to do that, are directly affected and not in a good way? Most think they are royalty and do not have to answer to the same laws & codes as the rest of us.

Is it being noted that these fine young American patriots died in Mr. Obama's War, or are all of those shown only from Iraq?

First off, your number is flawed since Catholic hospitals classify many miscarriages as abortions. I know because I had a mis and a D&C and the bill said "Abortion". So don't trust the numbers. They're rigged.

Second, if all those millions had been carried to term, statistically a large portion of them would have been criminals since the biggest predictor of future criminality is being born unwanted. So, maybe the guy who would have grown up and kiIIed you was one of those fetuses and that is the only reason you are alive to write your troIIish post.

Personally, I don't agree with abortion because it is sick. But I believe the decision is between a woman and God - she will have to answer for the sin of killing her baby.

All these deaths and for what? Democracy? American's are dying in countries like Iraq and Afghanstan where woman are beaten for going out of their homes without a man beside them or for the slightest perceived straying from a perverted sense of Islam, Gay men are murdered and those left alive live in constant fear and the bombings continue on an almost daily basis. Nothing is going to change in either country and it's not our job to change it. We should arm those in Iraq and Afghanistan who want to fight perverted Islamicists and get out completely. In the end thoigh, no matter what we do, these countries are not and will not be out friends.

To all the Veteran's and their families this is a letter to them... Where does the soldier go when the vessel they counted on time after time has finally worn down? The body that could run the sprint or endure the marathon , climb or rappel any obstacle, out think and out last the opposition. Battle but not hate and give unconditional love to the RED,WHITE AND BLUE. Tours of duty that cause the best of marriages to fail and make strangers of their children. When the sensory is dulled and the reflex is no more, and the name is replaced by your last four. When your life is put in a statisticle category used as a pawn wheeled out every election cycleand after the votes are counted (covertly) your put back on the sunless shelf until the light of another election season blooms. The next time you hear a political or media pundit criticize a veteran for exercising their right to voice an opinion on war or any other subject, Thank God for that Shell of a Patriot that stands befor you and remember throughout our American History they housed the seed of our Freedom of Democracy!!!

Why are we making this a Democratic or Republican issue? War is wrong no matter who lives in the White House. When a bomb goes off or weapon is fired the blast material or bullet that causes the bodily harm doesn't have Democrate or Republican stamped on it. We have to get beyond the ideology and back to moral decency. In 1975, I escorted a fallen soldier back home to Florida, the Family and friends never asked which political party was to blame. I think when people don't have real answers or good questions and lack pertinent information, they resort to name calling and finger pointing.

I'm pretty sure that it was a rather prolonged and costly WAR that ended slavery. And Naziism. And Japanese Imperialism. And that stopped the slaughter of European Jews. Grow up!

This honor for these brave Americans is long overdue. For too many years bush wanted them hidden because he did not want to see Americans braver than him or cheney and did not want the country to understand the price we were paying for his war.

Do you say it with straight face? Do you really believe the nonsense coming our of your mouth? 7 years of total incompetent of Bush in Afghanistan, because he had to focus on his private war in Iraq, and you dare to blame this on a president who's on the job for less than three months? You're pathetic.

It is called accountability. For decades, Americans have run up ridiculous amounts on their credit cards. When asked why, many say they really didn't feel like they were spending real money, since they never saw it. Every flag draped coffin should remind us of the precious and irreplaceable life that was laid down in service of our country. We need to weigh the cost when we make decisions to spend such treasure. and we must think very carefully on the worth of such decisions. These fallen heroes are the true cost of war.

Bush and cheny, did not want the citizens of the united states to see the aftermath of their carnage. These two criminals are such cowards they were themselves ashamed of their failed policies, their lies, and the fact that their deception of the facts would indeed catch up with them.

About time. Our military forces deserve our respect and we should honor the fallen, not hide them away because politicians are afraid to face the consequences of their decisions.

And those who lied to bring us to war while hiding away in "undisclosed locations"?

They need to understand that no one will forget - ever - that those who have fallen with such honor did so in service to America, and not in service to the stain that has been splashed upon America's history.
