In this March 19, 2008 photo provided by the U.S. Air Force, Lt. Gen. Robert D. Bishop Jr., then 3rd Air Force commander, left, presents Staff Sgt. Phillip Myers, 48th Civil Engineer Squadron, with a Bronze Star medal during an Airmen’s Call at RAF Lakenheath, England. Myers, 30, of Hopewell Va, died April 4, 2009 in Afghanistan from wounds suffered from an improvised explosive device. After receiving permission from family members, Air Force officials planned to open Dover Air Force Base, Delaware for the media to observe the return of the body of Myers Sunday night. DOVER, Del. — For the first time since an 18-year ban on news coverage of returning war dead was lifted, the media witnessed the arrival Sunday night of a soldier killed overseas.

After receiving permission from family members, the military opened Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to the press. An eight-member team wearing white gloves and camouflage battle fatigues carried the body of 30-year-old Air Force Staff Sgt. Phillip Myers of Hopewell, Va., off a military jet in a solemn ceremony on a cool, clear night.

Myers was killed April 4 near Helmand province, Afghanistan, when he was hit with an improvised explosive device, the Department of Defense said.

The ceremony under the yellowish haze of airport floodlights took about 20 minutes with Myers' wife and other family members in attendance.

Myers was a member of the 48th Civil Engineer Squadron with the Royal Air Force in Lakenheath, England, one of the bases the U.S. Air Force uses in the country. He was awarded a Bronze Star for bravery last year in recognition of his efforts in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, the Department of Defense said.

The new Pentagon policy gives families a choice of whether to admit the press to ceremonies at Dover, home to the nation's largest military mortuary and the entry point to the U.S. for service personnel killed overseas.

Critics of the previous policy had said the government was trying to hide the human cost of war.

President Barack Obama had asked for a review of the ban, and Defense Secretary Robert Gates has said that the blanket restriction made him uncomfortable. The administration will let families decide whether to allow photographs.

For example, if several caskets arrive on the same flight, news coverage will be allowed only for those whose families have given permission.

The ban was put in place by President George H.W. Bush in 1991, at the time of the Persian Gulf War. From the start, it was cast as a way to shield grieving families.

There have been several exceptions since then, most notably in 1996 when President Bill Clinton attended the arrival of the remains of Commerce Secretary Ron Brown and 32 others killed in a plane crash in Croatia. In 2000, the Pentagon distributed photographs of the arrival of remains of those killed in the bombing of the USS Cole and in 2001, the Air Force distributed a photograph of the remains of a victim of the Sept. 11 attack on the Pentagon.

One objection to lifting the ban had been that if the media were present, some families might feel obligated to come to Dover for the brief, solemn ritual in which honor guards carry the caskets off a plane. Few families now choose to attend, in part because doing so means leaving home and the support system of friends at a difficult time. The sudden trip can also be expensive and logistically difficult to arrange.

You see that flag draped coffin? There's a kid in there I'm extremely proud of, and a family my heart reaches out to.

There isn't one person, on this thread, who gives a twit about the American Military, or about the Men and Women who serve. Yet you get on here with you're sanctimonious BS pretending that you do. How many of you were waiting at the Airports, when our soldiers came home from Vietnam, calling them baby killers and murderers, how many waited at the Airports when they came home from Desert Storm, calling them baby killers and murderers, how many are waiting, now at the Airports to call them baby killers and murderers? Please spare me your "heartfelt Sympathies", please!

Semper Fi!

Well my brother in law is in the Air Force and my uncle died in Vietnam so I can easily disagree with you but I don't need, nor do I want, to convince you of that.

What a crock. The Pentagram doesn't pay for it, since they don't pay for anything honorable, but only pay for death and destruction, as they work for the evil ones.

And if we put the generals in the front lines, we would end the war today, and all wars today. Cowards, all.

secretary gates and president obama have done us all a great service here.

the american serviceman and woman finally have two real LEADERS at the top.

as a soldier on leave from the front lines of the fight, i can tell you this:

if i were to come home to my family with a flag draped around my body, i want the entire world to see the sacrifice an American serviceman and his family made for the betterment of mankind. i want each and every citizen to know that a man has given his life in a fight in order to make another human being's life better.

after 18 years of being denied the opportunity to properly thank the american serviceman/woman, president obama took all of 2 months to understand the truth. that's a TRUE commander in chief.

No one, that I know of, likes to see a flag draped coffin.

In the '40s a star was placed in the front window of most homes to let everyone know that a family member was serving. Some homes had more than a single star there.

If you have a loved one in the military, be proud of it. That does not mean that war is not Hell, because it is, and in some cases is Nuts.

If flag draped coffins are an embarrassment to anyone, it is most probably those that will do anything to evade military service.

I am thankful that I can finally give my respect and gratitude to those who have gave the ultimate price.
To keep (in the past) our soldiers from receiving this and myself from giving it is a sad thing. To not show our country these very fine people who have given up their LIVES, is so wrong. We can now take a moment to honor them. Before, we knew not, those who had fallen. God bless them and their families.

I will NEVER be able to fathom the DEPTH of the ignorance of some people on this thread.. who might have a nephew or some relative currently serving overseas who seem to think that they can claim some sort of "possessary" claim to what the REST of America can "see" or NOT "see".

This is OUR Country.... NOT just YOURS.

These are OUR servicepeople.... NOT just YOURS.

The ONLY reasons these images were withheld from the CITIZENS of OUR Country is because the powers-that-be felt that if we were exposed to the TRUTH... we might not have allowed them to put OUR kids in harm's way for the BOGUS reasons they claimed.

Spin it ANY way you would like to.... but WE THE PEOPLE have not only the RIGHT to see what is being done in OUR name... but the DUTY as responsible citizens to act.

If you don't like that... then I suggest that you get USED to disappointment.... because OUR Country is in OUR hands once again.

Though we all are collectively mourning the loss of any American life while in harm's way to protect our safety, allowing the media -- and thereby the public -- to see the actual cost of a soldier's sacrifice is imperative. Americans are not as a populace particularly capable of multitasking in their consciousness. As the President said, the idea that Iraq and Afghanistan would not be of importance to people once he took office is unbelievable. But the necessity of one's ability to provide for his or her family, and pay their mortgage and put food on the table, brings out the ole John Locke "state of nature" argument in full force. It is my sincere hope that the images of the dead are not used as propaganda for any purpose other than reigniting the sense of responsibility that we -- the American citizenry -- have, to demand from our leaders policy that stands the tests of reasonableness and justice.

Thank you, Sgt. Myers. Your valiant life inspires us all to be emboldened for truth and peace.

I don't think that Americans are any less agile in their abilities to multitask in the consciousness than any other country. We all get propoganda, no matter the country.

I can't believe this war is still going on. For two years we have had a democratically controlled congress and all they do is talk about ending the war but, refuse to actually stop it.

Now we have a President who says he is against the war but wants to keep continuing it

This is madness

at the risk of sounding naive, i am all for just getting out of there, and afghanistan as well. use all of the billions we will be spending on these two debacles in the future, and spend it on establishing a kick-*ss homeland securtiy with state of the art ways to furrow out cells in this country. i personally, and this may sound harsh, but i don't care it the entire middle east just evaporates in whatever manner they choose. same goes for our "good buddies", the pakistanis. :'(

There two - you know. Which one are speaking of? At the risk of being wrong, I bet you mean Iraq - the one our current CIC was against from the start. It doesn't take a genius to realize that he probably wants out as quickly and as safely as possible. Agreed?

Then chill out. It will happen.

Oh nonsense - if the Dems cared at all about what they claim to, they could have stopped it anytime in the past two years. How much money does M u r t h a get from his backdoor deals with lobbyists in the military industry?

They are ALL typical politicians, regardless of party. The right is learning that the hard way right now. The left will too - soon enough.

That is entirely the wrong reason, using our fallen to advance a political cause. The only reason they should be showed is to show them the respect they are due for the sacrifice they made.

Well that is real sweet but if we go patting ourselves on the back for respecting the dead it sort of makes it ok that they died. Preventing the deaths of thousands is not a "political" cause but a humanitarian one. America has not had to deal with the true cost of this war because the bloody reality of it has been kept far from us. Truly respecting the dead and honoring our troops means doing everything we can to prevent more of this senseless tragedy.
