Washington Post:

President Obama touched down in this Turkish capital Sunday night for a two-day visit at the tail end of a maiden overseas trip that has stretched from London to the western fringes of Asia.

Air Force One landed in darkness at Ankara's airport just after 9 p.m. local time amid widespread Turkish hopes for improved relations with the United States, a powerful show of police force and plans for demonstrations against U.S. policies.

Obama's trip in Europe has been a great success with the European people. The coverage here in Paris is wall to wall.

The next time an American president suggests something like this the European response should be, "after you make Mexico a state"

I don't suppose Obama met or hung around with any progressive types while he was over there? The guy needs to meet a few progressives.

President Obama's foreign trip definitely does not wind down on Monday, as he is as busy as a beaver. LOL

Look for President Obama's excellent adventure to yield nice pictures, favorable coverage and little else. Our allies and adversaries have measured this man, and found him weak. Something to think about at our next "man caused disaster." http://theclosetconservative.com

Who could be so naive as to imagine that the West is concerned enough about Turkey, and all this humanitarian blather distributed to obtain consenus from the population, to impose a TWO day visit to Turkey by a President already submerged by the economic crisis. My eye!
With the paths to Afganistan closing one after another Turkey is the vital route the US needs to continue the occupation of that country. As always it is all about oil and the pipelines that are like Mr .Rochester's mad wife locked in the tower, hidden away but affecting every move. The tax payers pay for the protection of the oil companies, we continue sending our legions out to man military outposts over the entire world and we are off to another round of propaganda about the plight of the poor women we must free from bondage and getting closer to the Muslim world.
It is very likely that in the present situation President Obama would promise the moon to Turkey if he intends to follow his military advisors. For them, another country to occupy is like a toy store to a child.
It has nothing to do with Turkey, the Turks, Europe or the Europeans, It is all about keeping the supply lines to Afganistan open.
TWO days, just think about it?

Partisan Gap in Obama Job Approval Widest in Modern Era

For all of his hopes about bipartisanship, Barack Obama has the most polarized early job approval ratings of any president in the past four decades. The 61-point partisan gap in opinions about Obama's job performance is the result of a combination of high Democratic ratings for the president -- 88% job approval among Democrats -- and relatively low approval ratings among Republicans (27%).

Looks to me like Obama has a better job approval rating from Repubs than Bush did from Repubs and Dems combined.

My only wish is that the Europeans let Obama guide their policies as well.

One the brighter side Michelle is returning home. I feel like a relative is coming back.

If Europe lets Turkey join the community it gives Turkish citizens the right to work any where in Europe. This would be equal to America giving all Mexicans the right to work any where in the America. I am not sure but my guess is this is the real stumbling block to their exceptance.

If Obama wants to show that America is open to Mexicans I am sure that Europe will open its arms to the Turkish. Otherwise his comments are inappropriate meddling and hypocritical.

It's not the same thing. because we don't let Canadians in either. The EU admits Greece but rejects Turkey.

Suggest those who have opinions on Turkey's application to join the EU look at the following which at least gives some factual information and a map! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_European_Union_member_states_by_accession

Geographically Turkey's claim to be in Europe is a matter of debate - it straddles two continents. Its accession would give Europe a border with Iraq and Iran - is the US going to be suggesting next that Iraq joins the EU? Greece is clearly a European country.

The EU has expanded very fast - but cannot agree a constitution. It is understandable why "old Europe" as Rumsfeld so tactfully described France and Germany, should wish to pause before any further enlargement.

The EU does not exist simply to fulfill US strategic objectives (the encirclement of Russia).

Both Mexico and Turkey have a GDP per capita of about $8,000. Mexico has a little over 100 million people and Turkey has 72 million. Greece on the other hand has a GDP per capita of about $30,000 and a populaion of 11 million. Surely these factors should be taken into consideration rather than adopting some simple minded statement like you have made.

You really have to live in Europe to understand what you are saying. Turkey's economy is not solvent enough to prevent an exodus of Turks to follow greener financial pastures and, in turn, return the money home while tearing apart the country to which they moved. Turkey is also very different culturally--and I am not convinced a bridge can be made between the Jewish-Christian-Muslim-secular divide that is so evident already in current Europe. There are so many problems allowing Turkey into the EU that it would be impossible to describe on this blog. I am just an expat observing this odd situation, as we have a huge Turkish population here in Cologne. I also grew up in a very "Mexican" town as well as living in SoCal and can honestly say, it is 100% different than you simplistically hypothesize.

Back when it was first leaked that Obama would make a trip to a muslim country early in his administration I predicted that it should be Turkey. I was in Istanbul the day after the election and the general population there was both knowledgable of the election and excited about the outcome. Turkey is what America would wish all muslim countries were like. The government is definitly secular, they have been allies for years, tolerate religious minorities, and have a vital and diverse economy.

That will be PRESIDENT Barry to you! You, know, just because you don't say it doesn't me it isn't true. Hang on to your seat for the wonderful 8 years to come. If you think he is liberal now, just wait until his second term, when he doesn't have to worry about being re-elected. :)

You can be a Roguewolf all you want but disrespecting a sitting President tells us how uninformed and uneducated your really are. You resort to those little snarks because you cannot present a reasonable debate on your own behalf. Dont feel bad, neither can the Republican Party. They are out of ideas too and resort to snarks. Enjoy the next 8 years.

All I know is, I can't wait until he is safely back on US soil. I applaud what he is doing in Turkey and I understand why Michelle had to come home. I just don't want him to expose himself to any unnecessary risk in an attempt to change a mindset that has been around for thousands of years.

Don't you think that he's actually in greater danger trying to change the mindset in this country?
