I Like ItI Don’t Like It

During "Saturday Night Live's" Weekend Update, Madonna and Angelina Jolie sparred in a baby-off.

Madonna was just denied a second child from Malawi while Jolie has adopted kids from Cambodia, Vietnam and Ethiopia.

Madonna, played by Kristen Wiig, told Seth Meyers, "I love babies, but I especially love getting babies from crazy places."

Moments later Jolie, played by Amy Elliot, interrupts and challenges Madonna over who has babies from more exotic locales.

Madonna, Malawi and adoption madness
Her adoption controversy highlights the problems when politics trumps the welfare of the child.

I'd rather be tied down with my eyelids pried open and forced to watch repeated episodes of "Friends:"

For all of the money they spend trying to adopt their exotic African novelties, they probably could have fed the children's village for a couple of years. The father of Madonna's 1st exotic novelty didn't want to give up his son, he just couldn't afford to take care of him.

If these pop divas really cared they'd pay for them to stay at home and be raised amongst their own people.

Estimated costs for raising a child here in America for 18 years for a person w/ an income over 65K is $250,000. http://moneycentral.msn.com/articles/family/kids/tlkidscost.asp

The yearly income per capita for Malawi is $170. http://www.finfacts.ie/biz10/globalworldincomepercapita.htm

Meaning she could provide the income for one person for 1470 years or 1470 people for 1 year. Another way to look at it - she could provide income for 81 people for 18 years - for the average cost of raising an American child for 18 years.

Now take into account that Madonna (est. net worth of $850mil) isn't average and her children will live the most richly obscene life imaginable. Madonna could easily fund a whole village full of Malawi children for their entire childhood and never miss the pinch to her fortune. On top of that she could provide jobs for their parents by building a school, etc.

If she really cared...

"raised amongst their own people. "

What do you mean by that?

Did you know that Madonna supports an orphanage in Malawi?

I'm not hear to defend Madonna or Jolie, but people like you get very quiet when Mia Farrow is adopting a young asian girl, but the minute the skin color gets a little dark, all of a sudden the "Raised amongst THEIR own people" comments start to come out.

There is wickedness in you heart, and you need to do something about it.

You know exactly what I mean and the same goes for Mia Farrow.

I don't care if their obsession is "yellow", "red" "brown" or "black" - there are more than 500,000 children in foster care right here in the U.S. http://www.childwelfare.gov/pubs/factsheets/foster.cfm and 70,000 in the U.K.. http://www.fostering.net/resources/statistics06.php

These women fly over these children in their private jets and go to countries where they can bribe their way into purchasing babies and not have to worry about the parents having the money to seek a return of their children.

Plus the get a little tanned ornament to carry around.

edgemo did you know that the pyramids in Egypt were built by aliens from space.
And Angelina Jolie's boobs and lips are real.

Thank you for that. And it is NOT about color to answer a poster below - it is about the sheer BRASS of ignoring poor people in your own home, and going to the ends of the earth to look good.

It always amazes me when people who have never adopted think they can say something about who can adopt from where, when and how. Go away.

I appreciate where you're going with this, but both Jolie and Madonna gave major bucks to the native countries of their adopted children.

I'm aware, but Madonna's adoption included a child who's father wanted him. but couldn't afford him.

No amount of money can excuse taking someone's baby from them, if they want to keep that baby, but can't afford it.

I wonder if it was charity or bribe.

As hideous as SNL was last night, this really did make me laugh. The "my big, weird lips are sealed", the Benjamin Button joke, the baby island, the Russian babies... And then Seth's conflicted emotions. Eh, I laughed.

Then again, I also found the "Game Time" sketch a few weeks ago hilarious, so maybe I'm skewed. Happily, though.

SNL continues to be very erratic since the elections and the departure of Amy Poehler (actually, since the departure of head writer Tina Fey a few years back). Saturday's episode wasn't too bad, and Seth Rogen was a little better this time than the last time he hosted. The Madonna/Angelina sketch was clever.

If you know anything about social work, you would appreciate that to truly "help" a situation, you would be much more effective donating money to an organization or (for the cost of what these women would use to raise their adopted children) start an organization. If the motive if to "help" then it is sadly naive given the resources they have at their disposal.

Quite agree besta, There's an aspect doesn't seem to come up anywhere; being plucked out from one's culture is not necessarily the best thing in the world. In spite of the fact that our country is becoming more ethnically diverse every year, given the opportunity most would rather stay in their own country and culture. There are those that defend movie stars for adopting in foreign countries but their arguments focus much more on the celebrities than on the children. On another note, there are many children in our own country that go to bed hungry; there's much to do here. No doubt Angelina Jolie and Madonna fans are going to go ballistic on both of our comments. They'll rant about "what have we done". I've done my share and I suspect you have as well.

Not you too...I was beginning to think I was the only one getting the "what have you done" crap. Every time I see that in here I think back to the little boys in the 80's fussing back and forth..."I know you are, but what am I"...on and on and on.
