I Like ItI Don’t Like It

During "Saturday Night Live's" Weekend Update, Madonna and Angelina Jolie sparred in a baby-off.

Madonna was just denied a second child from Malawi while Jolie has adopted kids from Cambodia, Vietnam and Ethiopia.

Madonna, played by Kristen Wiig, told Seth Meyers, "I love babies, but I especially love getting babies from crazy places."

Moments later Jolie, played by Amy Elliot, interrupts and challenges Madonna over who has babies from more exotic locales.

SNL is not suffering, this has been a great year for the show, they just won a Peabody Award.
I thought this was really funny. They nailed these characters.

Since the Palin sketches I've been watching SNL regularly. I thought this sketch was great.
Won't Madonna be in her late sixties when the child graduates?
I haven't seen much real time Angelina. Is she as into herself as the skit suggests?

Brad and Angie want to make a home for orphans, is that to hard to understand.

Besides, why is adopting so unpopular when the children are coming from Africa. I don't recall all this hoopla when children are being adopted from other parts of the world.

the "russian baby" line and the reference to benjamin button both were hilarious. and while i think SNL has been suffering for a while, and still is, cut them a break, they make fun of all kinds of people. an aside; did anyone think that "jolie" looked more like octomom? :)

Phoebe, I'm just in from the supermarket where a magazine had Octomom on the cover. At first glance, I thought it was Angie.

As for the skit, it was spot on. The Madonna actress had her accent (Michigan + British mixture?) down to a tee, so to speak.

However, before anyone throws daggers my way, I am very sorry that Mercy is not leaving with Madonna on that jet plane.

I don't think it has anything to do with the race of the children. People mock them because they can't stop stalking babies. That's what the joke is about. They keep collecting all these children. Not that they can't afford it, but what are they trying to accomplish? Sounds like there's a hole in their lives that they're trying to fill with children. I'm glad they're helping the children, I just wonder why they keep adopting so many, especially Jolie. Sorry, but the woman creeps me out.

i don't know madonna or jolie so it is hard to judge. my beef is why can't these people adopt american babies; NYC alone has 10,000 kids in foster care waiting for adoption. she would have no "governmental" problem and it would certianly be just as noble. :)

until they ended up on Springer being shaken down by the 'birth parents'....

it is so easy for those who do NOTHING to ease the suffering of ANYONE to criticize those
who do...

They are both attempting to make life better for a child who without their help may never get enough to eat, or enough medical care or enough education... is that such an evil thing?

The poor country of Malawi has 2 MILLION orphans. And, an orphanage is not the same thing as foster care. Why not look at which child has the greater need rather than which child has the fortune to be born in a big city in the U.S.?

Or one of them could adopt from a reservation or Appalachian country. These children come from the poorest conditions in our own country. Not knocking anyone who wants to adopt, it very noble to do that, but they do seem to have a fetish for plucking kids from unusual locales rather than doing what most folks would do, which is go to the local adoption agency.

It has everything to do with the race of the children. When people adopt Asian and Russian children nothing is said.

If anybody adopted a football team of Asian and Russian kids, people would surely have something to say about it. Race has nothing to do with it.

It's the fact that this woman can't seem to get enough of filling her house with children (black, white, yellow, red, it doesn't matter), and in doing so, she seems to be trying to fill a hole in her own life.

Look, there's racism all over the place in this country, (witness the never-ending negative reactions to the Obamas by a certain individuals) but in this instance, I think you're really reaching.

Why is it your business how many kids they adopt? Are you paying their living expenses? Are they asking for public assistance to support these kids? These people work and get paid a lot of money to do as they please and they chose to adopt children to give them a better life and this is an issue?

If they really wantto help kids in developing countries, they can address the western corporate interests that keep those countries in debt. Or work toward de-glamorizing the violence that brutalizes these children and their families.

I'm sorry, but because we don't "know" them, we can't have feelings or thoughts about what they are doing? They are highly public figures, who actually live by and in the limelight. I have a certain respect for Angelina, but this move by Madonna just strikes me more as "look at me, look at me, I can adopt third world children too!" And coming on the heels of the scary, spooky, disgusting Octomom incident (who clearly is parroting Angelina in a demented way) it just smacks of cheap publicity.

Publicity is the the lifeblood of these people. While they may have some genuine concerns and cares, everything they do is done in (and for) the public glare. I have no pity for them, but I do reserve some for the poor children who end up as little more than their tools.

We had dinner Friday night with a couple we are friends with and their adopted son. This couple is the whitest couple I know. They are in their mid 60s and have several biological children. They are wealthy Christians (and Republicans - we don't talk politics). Their son is a young man who recently had his 28th surgery to correct severe double cleft palates.

The child came to them from Columbia when he was only a year and a half. A group of missionaries had found him deep inside the jungle where his tribe considered him a curse on the village. He spent his whole life in a wooden box and couldn't even crawl. He was starving. After bringing him to the States, the missionaries asked my friends to care for the child for 4 days following his first surgery. That was 17 years ago.

The boys adoptive parents chose to keep him when they learned he would be sent back to an orphanage in Columbia. Today he is being educated by private tutors (he has learning disabilities) and is being trained in music. His parents actively seek out black men to help mentor the boy.

How many of you REALLY understand what orphanages are like in third world countries? How many of you would deny my friend's son or those in Malawi a chance at a better life?

Why black men if he's from Colombia? Do they speak Spanish? Or do they think because he's African decent (this is what I'm assuming since you didn't mention it) getting in touch with his roots means someone of the same color even thought the culture is completely different?

As for the rest of you story. It his very nice of them.

I totally agree with your posting. The issue isn't adoption, the issue is Angelina and Madonna make the front page every time they adopt. Spielberg, Cruise, and Meg Ryan have all adopted and they did it quietly and presumably because they wanted to. These two women are just publicity seekers. It is not an accident Pitt, Jolie, and Aniston are still on covers of magazines.

It the reporters who follow them - Madonna and Jolie can't be blamed for that.

I think it was in the late 80s when one of those ABC news shows did a segment on a Romanian orphanage and the abuse children suffered there (a baby hadn't been changed for 2 days and the bottled milk had already become cheese). Several American couples who were touched and outraged by what they saw went to Romania to adopt many of those children. They opened their hearts to children in need. I don't recall SNL doing a humorous skit about that event, but these couples weren't celebrities. It's open season on celebrities who want to build a family. That horrible Meg Ryan adopting little girls from China must make people cringe. Just because Angelina Jolie travels the world to talk to refugees, helps victims of earthquakes, and is dumb enough to go to wartorn African countries doesn' t mean she has the right to adopt children from international orphanages. That Madonna - her children appear miserable and uncared for. UGH! When it's a non-celebrity American who opens her/his heart to a child and takes on the responsibility of caring for and nurturing the child, people are supportive, but Jolie and Madonna get themselves an SNL skit.

i would still make fun of them at least. i'm not amused by the adoptions. i'm amused by how much smug satisfaction they take in themselves. that's basically it. madonna especially. its nice that they happen to get some charitable stuff while they're out collecting children. i'm not even saying they shouldn't. but its still highly entertaining to make fun of them. if i've got to see them on the tv all the time, i'm not going to not make fun of them. you can't ask a show who's job it is to make fun of people, not to make fun of that.

And, do you deny that they have done something admirable in giving ORPHANS a home and a chance at the finest education money can by, at good health care and all of the things poor orphans in third world countries lack?

The tiny country of Malawi has 2 MILLION orphans. Do you really believe those orphans are better off in orphanages than with parents you label "smug"?

Their smugness of bypassing established adoption laws is part and parcel with their wealth and celebrity privilege, but also their white skin privilege. Adopting a white child from Eastern Europe wouldn't have the same gravitas and spectacle of reaching out beyond themselves (it's the "But I have a black _____" statement in a different form). Also they're actually unknowingly propagating the "Africa is a cripple" myth. It bolsters their own sense of benevolence and esteem, but they aren't aware of how this can be counter-productive to actually helping these areas, not to mention be patronizing to a fault. The only ones really "empowered" are the people who get to retreat back to their Hollywood/UK mansions. This was laid out perfectly by a Harvard and Oxford educated Zambian economist, Dambisa Moyo in a Newsweek article: http://www.newsweek.com/id/190375. The "Dead Aid" treatise she wrote is about enabling of weak African governments that never grow to sufficiently help their own citizens. Help and attention to a situation is great, but it should be the right kind. And trying to be a symbolic Super Mom or Super Aid Worker/Missionary to the continent won't help. Meanwhile, many AA's can't see that far ahead (Hutchinson) because they're just thrilled a white person accepts someone like them. It's really all quite sad to have intercine social attitudes play themselves out on a continental level like this. But it's there.

If they used the white adoptees for publicity and were still as hypocritical, yeah, of course they'd be mocked.

Would People magazine ooze sychophantic worship over angelina if she adopted a white kid?

Paul Newman ws a perfect example of a true philanthropist... and he was doing substantive charity work while Madonna was fellating coke bottles and Angelina was making out with her brother -- but he was for real -- not an ego case -- so you didn't see him strutting over it.

Can't help a village by adopting one child. Build a school, provide medical aid, basic foods, etc. This is all about self-patting on your back. Angelina needed a serious media makeover after her crazy blood carry hubby bottle, girl lover romps in a society that judges harshly. She needs to get the media on her side to erase her public no-no's. Madonna is simply following the fashion.

Seriously, couldn't either Jolie and/or Madonna generate just as much, if not more, publicity by adopting entire villages ( each containing a number of babies ), instead of individual people? Then, if either celeb were to actually physically help the village, this would be genuinely newsworthy.
