we need to stop thinking Afghanistan as a country with a single authority. The best approach is going to be the one Biden had about Iraq which was a central government with strong provincial ones.

Sorry but I think no money for rebuilding (as if 70 percent of it didn't end up in the pockets of corrupt Afghans) should go there until they pass laws giving ALL women equal rights to education, work, walking out of the house and no punishment because some jagoffs raped them.

And if they don't like it.....well let's just say I would have no problem establishing an East and West Afghan(or north and south...whatever) where on section is actual democracy and they can go blow themselves in the other half. Allow ALL women who want out of the Sharia/Sunni/Shia law jags to come there.

IF I ran things but oh well, we'll just keep giving to people who are still stuck in the 7th Century and where women are routinely murdered for "honor" and girls have no future at all.

The name of the game is always playing one group against another and pursuing common goals. The devil is in the long-term details - such as our one time support of Saddam. Regardless, it would seem any influence from within the region that might contribute to countering the influence of the Taliban might be useful. Iran wishes to extend its influence and footholds in the region and we seem to have been on a seven yr. program to enhance their potentials.

If there can be a reasonable common accord to effect our supposed mission in Afghanistan, I believe it wise to contemplate such and try to get out, whereby vast sums being spent to further engage ourselves in quicksand might instead be prodigiously spent toward developing alternative energy sources.
