With Mrs Obama - setting new standards in fashion perhaps haute couture will begin considering the bodies, complexions and pocketbooks of the average woman.

Prior to Mrs. Obama, the majority of designers did not consider certain women showcasing their fashions on the runway - why care now?

So far, it seems like not too many people are interested in what Michelle has to say, only the clothes she wears.

I agree with richdoll. Michelle is a babe.

There are a few nice outfits here, but what's the deal with the maid's uniform she wore to Prague. The dreaded Look Number 10. Yikes!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:38 PM on 04/13/2009

and that was my favorite..so now what? what's maid about it except for the colors? so I guess all black and white clothes look like maid outfits to you, so that includes tuxedos. Where are you traveling that maids dressed like that?..these and any articles focus on the 1st Ladies Fashion is nothing but noise to try to diminsh her...because people don't get it/she is more then just a wife or arm piece..She is a Yale&Harvard educated very accomplished WOMAN..not a fashionista or trophy wife..if any of those outfits showed up on S&TC they would be innovative and creative

Oscar de la Renta should stick with the Nancy Reagans and Laura Bushes of the world. The designer to grandmothers is not the voice of fashion for vibrant young women.

I liked everything except that horrible assymetrical blue cardigan with the sequins and the argyle pattern. Yuck. Burn that thing.

I loved almost all of Michelle's European clothes and I especially loved it that she made some great choices for the places she was going. When she had tea with Sarah Brown, she wore the straight skirt and cardigan with the spangles. The skirt and cardigan were so classically English, and the the spangles put Michelle's mark on it. I loved that outfit the best because it was so everyday and so chic at the same time. Also, I know that a lot of people didn't like the full skirt with the multi blue cardigan sweater, BUT she wore that outfit to talk to the mostly minority girl's school----and the girls were in a swoon over that dress. I saw an interview with one thirteen year old who was gasping about how much she wanted an outfit exactly like Michelle's. Dressing for where you are is an art. And Michelle knows how to do that very, very well. And yes, that frothy, full skirted black number at Baden Baden was great and the fitted black sheath with the tiny little cardigan also in black showed what a luscious bunch of curves she's made of. There is so much to admire about Michelle Obama.

I am not sure why the ranting from De La Renta . Seriously,is he suggesting that any one,let alone Michelle Obama copies Laura Bushs' style? Because as far as i am concern, she had none.

Laura Bush always looked to me like a badly stuffed pillow in a long-ago style. Her fondness for blood-red lipstick and very unflattering, sack-like dresses in dowdy colours did her no favours. Heaven forfend Michelle Obama should dress like her! My grandmother had better fashion sense!

Jackie O seemed like an airhead, it's something when you have beauty and brains that is what

Michelle has. She doesn't try to imitate Jackie O! Jackie was pretty but have you ever heard her

speak? she sounded like Marilyn Monroe or in modern day Anna Nicole. Why would any African

American woman want to be dumbed down like that we have enough problem as it is. Michelle is

following in Hillary's footsteps, a first Lady who will make a difference in the world. Michelle dress like

any woman with nice arms would dress. Michelle wear her hair like like Oprah use to so why do

people compairing her to Jackie O ?

Jackie O was of a different time.

You're right about remembering that Jackie was from a different time. Things were so different then. I remember about 1960, I was going to a little country school in Michigan with only about fifty kids in the school and the big whispered scandal was-------that one of the moms had a job away from home!!! But, it is true that Jackie talked in a little whispery voice i.e. watch the taped tour she made when refurbishing the White House. And sometimes she seemed a little too dear. But that was her time and we all have to live in our own time. But it is also true that Michelle Obama lives in her time. She's great at all those older things and she also is a modern woman. And since we have to live in our times too, then isn't it nice to have such a great role model? Fifty years from now, I wonder who and what the role model will be for our granddaughters. I think that we would be amazed if we knew, but I trust our kids to make a better world. I think Michelle's way is better than Jackie's because we have men because we love and want them and not just because we can't make a living without them. I like to think that by the time our granddaughters are setting trends that the world will be more peaceful. I pray for that.

I love Michelle and I loved Jackie. The sleeveless sheaths that Michelle favors were first made famous by Jackie O as first lady. The hairstyle Michelle currently wears is also a style Jackie O wore in the 60s. Jackie O also liked kitten heels, flats and 3/4 length sleeve jackets. If you have the occasion to go through photos of the era, you'll see the similarities before you time and time again. BTW, Jackie was no dummy. She graduated from Vassar, was a photojournalist before she met JFK and an editor at a big publishing company for a number of years after her divorce from Onassis. I wouldn't confuse soft voices with stupidity. Soft voices open doors, strident ones don't. And Jackie was known for her voice before Marilyn--and definitely before Anna Nicole.

Jackie O spoke like she did while the First Lady because that was what was called for for ladies of high society in those times, and certainly it hid her intelligence, but those were different times then. It was expected that women, especially wives of political figures, were there to look pretty, act lady like, and talk about china and curtains, and Jackie O mastered that very well. However, Jackie O was also very intelligent.

I like the fact that she promotes American designers, like Michael Kors. It's elegant and affordable. It's great!

...and other young, newer American designers who would NEVER EVER get a look from the world's stage. We may have our favorite outfits, but this First Lady wears all of her clothes well. She's beautiful, bright and classy. Outside of me, I can't think of a more embraceable role model for my daughters in our present-day culture.

She looks beautiful in every Alaia dress/ pieces she wear. Therefore, she should wear them more often.

Michelle looks good in her clothes because she is comfortable with herself. she can wear a paper bag and it will good. i'm a woman and she's a babe, a good role model. times are tough around the country what would it look like if she wore thousand dollar clothes , the repigs would have reason to attack her about her being extravagant, the designers are mad due to she will not promote them but there are other reasons all the top designers do not promote black runway/print models

I love the fact she is highlighting her curves. The cardigans are not meant to 'hide' anything.. but rather they accentuate. Our young women need to see someone look elegant that has curves. It is harder to dress well when you are not a stick.

I think so too. There is nothing inappropriate about it, but she does often wears clothes that show the lines of her body. And why not, she works hard to stay fit and good looking. That black fitted sheath with the little black cardigan that she wore getting off the plane the last day in Europe; from certain angles that dress displayed a gorgeous, curvy woman-----oooh la la!!

She is no Jackie O, really, no one ever will be. Jackie O "never had a fashion mistake".
Michele O has way more misses than hits
7 and 9 were the only two dresses that were perfect.
Sleeveless, sweater(s), skirts, patterns are all misses and she keeps repeating these same mistakes. The black and white dress when seeing the Queen was the worse, just grateful she didn't take the jacket off!
They have her makeup right (obviously she doesn't do it and that is why it always looks perfect). The pink family of makeup with a hint of violet, purple is perfect for her.
She needs to sink her teeth into real designers that know what they are doing and doing it well for 100 years.
Solids, solids, solids, solids is the only way for her. When she wears prints or flowery dresses, it is a bomb. She cannot pull it off at all.

I collect magazines and just pulled out 4 articles that were critical of "Jackie O's" wardrobe.
They, like you are "full of it" and should try to get a life.

Who wants to be Jackie O, Michelle is black... The white women who keep saying that Michelle is

imitating Jackie O is tripping. Michelle wears her hair like Oprah use to, look it up. Oprah is

Michelle's hero not Jackie O

Jackie O spoke like Marilyn Monroe, Michelle speaks like Hillary, big difference.

Michelle's body is athletic.......... any woman who's any race who has arms like Michelle goes

sleeveless that is something that all women want to acheive.

Don't forget, the First Lady has a butt, she doesn't look like your average first lady. They all had butts like Sponge Bob Square Flat Butt.

I loved her in the black and red. I am a conservative and I am very serious about politics yet I think it was very impressive and made me proud to see her look so beautiful. I do not dress elegantly at all but whe ears very chick yet elegant clothes. A great role modes.
Even though I usually vote Republican I remeber Jackie Kennedy. Our family had almost every book of the Kennedys and when we went to church (Catholic) every family member of mine including aunts and cousins copied her. It was grand!
Let's not say ugly things about this beautiful woman. I do not like her husband's politics as I lived during the Carter administration and lost my job at Boeing. Before long unemployment was 21%. I did not get a job for years and my husband lost 3 jobs at different dealerships. For about 5 months he had to pump gas.(years ago you could live on gas station wages as our house payment was only $100 a month and hamburger was 3# for a dollar-power bills were about $25 a month. I think Obama is on the wrong track and I think unemployment will rise . It scares me to think of what we went through years ago but most could really tighten up and still pay rent and eat-Now I am sooooooooooooo scared for people as rent in my little town is never less than $700 a month.

And I was a self employed artist and the Carter years were my best earning years..........my clients were MIDDLE CLASS people. What husband & wife, both BARTENDERS, could afford $1,600. for a mural today? Hamburger was cheaper and TASTED better because the factory farms/slaughter house routine hadn't been perfected yet. Fish was cheap and PLENTIFUL & HEALTHY TO eat!
May I point out that your job at Boeing, ( one of the military industrial complex) your husband's at dealerships ( car? Detroit already on the wrong path), unfortunate gas shortage then,..........were PART OF THE PROBLEM and perhaps if you had been more AWARE back then......along with a LOT Of other people.........reagan wouldn't have been able to pull the wool over our eyes with his "small government" rhetoric while spending millions of taxpayers money on defense and starwars.., enabling the corporations and the TAX REFORM: basically ruined really small business. reagan, bush, bush & Clinton's small business was NOT a single female artist, or any Mom & Pop venture! Almost EVERYONE works as a cog in a BIG BUSINESS NOW! And yes all our money goes to THEM!
