Turkish security services have arrested a Syrian man who was planning to assassinate US President Barack Obama during his current trip to Turkey, the Saudi daily Al Watan reported Monday.

It was a HOAX:

ANKARA, Turkey - Turkish police detained a man after receiving a hoax tip that he was plotting to kill President Barack Obama but quickly released him without charge, a government official said Tuesday.

The official, who is close to police operations in Turkey, said police detained the suspect — a Turkish national — on Friday after receiving an anonymous e-mail which even gave the suspect's address in Istanbul. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of rules that bar civil servants from speaking to the media without prior authorization.

"There was nothing serious. Police released the man and said he was mentally disturbed," the official said. "The tip turned out to be a hoax. The IP address from which the e-mail was sent was traced to the United States."

As a Syrian living in Damascus, I find this story bogus...Syrians have a lot of hope with Obama at the helm. We actually think this guy can do something and respect the way he's going about it. I'm not saying that some aren't skeptical, but the tone he has used since coming to office has been one of reconciliation. I'm not saying that some of us aren't kookoo ...I just don't like the heading of the story...A large percentage of Syrians have a very positive view of Americans, America, and the American culture...I just hope people don't spin this story in the way it's usually spun. I think there's more to this story than A Syrian, in Turkey, with and Al-Jazeera pass card. Some people would just love to hit 3 birds with one stone.

I'm not doubting the veracity of the report, but why is it that this story doesn't seem to have been picked up at all by US or other International media? Is this a security precaution, or what? I'm just a bit confused.

CNN ran it, but I find it very odd, because they said that the press go through metal detectors. This guy was caught sometime before the press conference, so how did they know who to apprehend? Sketchy facts. Something doesn't jive.

I just saw a story regarding the plot while watching CNN. Anderson Cooper--the anchor of Anderson Cooper 360 said the Secret Service is taking this plot seriously. They're working with Turkish officials.

The reason the "assassination plot" was not running in most domestic media outlets was because the whole plot consisted of a Syrian with a knife. His chances, in my opinion, were less than an Asian-American's chance in He11.
