LAS VEGAS — Ethan Hawke might want to avoid crossing paths with Toby Keith in the near future.

The country star lit into the actor for an article Hawke wrote in the new issue of Rolling Stone about Kris Kristofferson. In it, Hawke refers to a blowup Kristofferson had with an unnamed country star back in 2003 that sounds a lot like Toby Keith.

But a furious Keith, speaking backstage at the Academy of Country Music Awards, said it wasn't true, and added that Hawke did not name him in the story because he did not want to face him later.

"I don't know Ethan Hawke. Ethan Hawke wanted to do some kind of superficial Rolling Stone article. And he did everything he could to make his story the greatest story ever in Rolling Stone," Keith said. "And it was a fictitious (expletive) lie. O.K?

"He didn't even call me by my name. ... He called Norah Jones, Ray Charles, everybody else by name. Willie (Nelson), Kris (Kristofferson). Why didn't he call my name? Why didn't he say Toby Keith walked through and said this (expletive)? Right? You know why. You know why. You know as good as anybody why. He didn't want to (expletive) deal with the aftermath."

In the story, Hawke claimed he witnessed the confrontation backstage at Nelson's tribute concert for his 70th birthday at the Beacon Theatre in New York. The article does not name Keith but says it was a country singer who "had a monster hit about bombing America's enemies back into the stone age." In 2002, Keith had the song "Courtesy of the Red, White & Blue (The Angry American)" that threatened retribution for the 9/11 attacks.

Hawke said the argument began with the "Star" telling Kristofferson: "None of that lefty (expletive) out there tonight, Kris."

Hawke said Kristofferson then angrily confronted and asked him if he had ever served in the military.

"Have you ever killed another man? Huh? Have you ever taken another man's life and then cashed the check your country gave you for doing it? No, you have not, so shut the (expletive) up," Hawke recounted Kristofferson as saying. "You don't know what the hell you are talking about."

A spokeswoman for Hawke did not immediately return a message seeking comment. A Rolling Stone spokeswoman said that the magazine fully stands by the story and Hawke's reporting.

Keith directed his anger Sunday not only at Hawke but at a reporter from the Tennessean who wrote about the Hawke article and asked Keith about it backstage.

Kristofferson, in a statement, said he did not recall the incident and tried to be diplomatic to all sides.

"I would like to state for the record that I am friends with Ethan Hawke, Toby Keith and Tennessean reporter Peter Cooper. Although I do not remember the events at Willie's birthday party as reported in Rolling Stone, what does it matter?" he asked. "That was six years ago. I spoke to Ethan before I put out my statement and thanked him for the beautiful story he wrote for Rolling Stone and I also told him I did not recall the incident at Willie's birthday party. This is the last statement I will put out about this nonsense."

So, basically, what all of you Toby haters are saying is that he should just lock-step with the Democratic/progressive side on every issue??? How does that make you any different than the Repubs?
For the record, there are lots of good Dems/Pro's that are hawkish on terrorism and I, for one, was an angry American after 9/11.
Where Toby screws up is not by defending his stance on Iraq or terrorism (which is his prerogotive), but by trying to stifle or threaten other peoples opinions.

He would need some intelligence to defend his stance on anything...obviously, he is incapable of doing anything except telling others who disagree with him to shut up and sing. He should take his own advise.

We were all angry after 9/11 but what infuriates is how Bush mislead us and used 9/11 to trample those with opposing views and took our nations focus off those who actually attacked us on that horrible day! Look where we are now, stuck in Iraq and watching the terrorist and the taliban stronger then before and a world that no longer trust America...

"Where Toby screws up is not by defending his stance on Iraq or terrorism" I know it's been said a million times on these boards, but this is the problem with these stupid, redneck, country bumpkin, angry americans (they just don't get it) - IRAQ HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH TERRORISM before we invaded.

Where TK screws up is in thinking that any intelligent American gives a damn what he or the Dixie Chicks, or any other "entertainer" think about politics or foreign affairs.

If Keith feels so strongly about bombing the crap out of other people, why does he not join the military himself?

Toby Keith just spews much of what rural white America thinks. That's why he's so popular with the country fans.

Hey, Toby, remember when 6'3", 230 pound Carlos Delgado of the New York Mets refused to come out of the dugout for the national anthem to protest the Iraq War? I didn't hear your mouth then. First it's the Dixie Chicks and 70 year old Kris. Now he wants a piece of 5'7", 160 pound, Ethan.

He was eligible military age from 1989-2003 and never served a day in his life while the following military conflicts broke out: Tehran hostage crisis, Grenada, Beirut, Panama, first Iraq war, Somalia, Yugoslavia, 9/11, Iraq War. He could have enlisted in his last year of eligibility for the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Seriously, is there anything worse than a chicken hawk? Yes. Toby Keith, who stayed home singing about bombing people and picking fights with tiny liberals but who never once had the guts to put on a uniform for one day. Craziest thing of all is that he's a Democrat and voted for Obama (head scratching ensues). Me thinks Toby is a Madonna...master of creating controversy that doesn't exist to boost profits.

You've done your homework 278bp45. However, anyone who can get that famous with a voice like his has to get credit for something, with a little help from his auto-tune friends. He also penned the national anthem of narcism, "How Do You Like Me Now," and really keeps the billies drooling.

Democrab it is narcissism, just helping get the attributes to the disorder spelled correctly since all of his audience suffers from the same issue with more violence and ignorance sprinkled on top.

He was military eligible in 1979, not 1989. It makes your post more accurate - but I am with you on it's substance. Toby Keith - big, and stupid, yet afraid.

Proud to be an American?
Is that about it Toby?
Got your red and white bandanna, blue jeans, Jack Daniels t-shirt and that same Japanese guitar I see in your hands in every photo. Oh, my bad, it's not the same one. Its the sunburst one, not the black one you use when you're shilling for Ford trucks. Still, it's a Takamine, made by Kaman Corp.
You know Takamine Toby. Oops, accidental punny metaphor there.
Those are the guys who tried to buy a pre-war Martin D-28 at auction back in the sixties, take it apart and analize it so they could knock it off cheaply. Swore they could put it back together good as new.
But they were stopped by a real rootsy American troubador, Stephen Stills. He outbid Kaman and saved the lovely Martin from certain destruction.
By the way Toby, Martin guitars are made in Nazareth, PA. Same place they've been making them for over 150 years.
What about Gibson guitars Toby? Another fine instrument made in Montana. Isn't Montana a macho enough place for a guitar to be built? Not since that Brokeback Mountain flick, huh.
You'd rather use an instrument made in Sakashita Japan.
Oh and what's that thing wrapped around the neck of your beautiful Martin knock-off Tak? A capo? Really Toby, a capo?
What's that they say about guitar players and capos?
Whaddya call a guitar player without a capo?
A MUSICIAN!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:35 AM on 04/07/2009

Toby can play in any key as long as it is C or an Am pentatonic. Everything else needs a capo.
He can play all of about 3 open chords. Any kid can play better than him after they have worked through the first three pages of a Guitar for Dummies book.

How in the world did this chicken-sh*t get a contract?

Wow, I'm not a musician and I know nothing about guitars. Your post was really interesting, thank you for sharing your knowledge. Really sheds some light on Toby Keith!

You're welcome. I'm really being a little nitpicky on old Toby. But he deserves it to some degree.
His choice of guitars pales in comparison to the way he's profitted off his jingoistic music and bully bully war talk.
If he railed in his songs against the people who were responsible for 9/11 and then donated all the profits from those songs to war widows and orphans I'd have some respect for him.
People like Dylan and Kristofferson aren't perfect, but they protested against war period, not against a whole race of people while urging others to bleed and die for their sense of justice to be fulfilled.
Kristofferson was a Rhodes scholar and is a veteran. He's got the right to say any thing he wants about this stupid pointless war our young people are fighting.
