Gay Families Invited To White House Easter Event

WASHINGTON — The White House is allocating tickets for the upcoming Easter Egg Roll to gay and lesbian parents as part of the Obama administration's outreach to diverse communities.

Families say the gesture shows that the new Democratic administration values them as equal to other families. And for many, being included in the annual tradition _ dating to 1878 _ renews hope that they will have more support in their quest for equal rights in matters such as marriage and adoption than under the previous administration.

On Tuesday, gays and lesbians gained another victory when Vermont joined Connecticut, Massachusetts and Iowa in giving gay couples the right to marry. In the District of Columbia, the council voted to recognize gay marriages performed in other states.

White House officials said that tickets for Monday's Easter Egg Roll event were distributed to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender organizations, but did not specify how many or to which ones. Representatives from Family Equality Council, Human Rights Campaign, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and other groups confirmed they were invited and encouraged to have their members participate.

"The Obama administration actually reached out to us as an organization, and said we want gay families there, and they are an important part of the American family fabric," said Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of the Boston-based Family Equality Council, which is helping spearhead the effort to organize families to attend.

Chrisler said Tuesday she expects more than 100 gay and lesbian-headed families to take part in the egg roll.

Overall, officials are gearing up for a bigger turnout than ever before, with families arriving from 45 states and the District of Columbia, said Semonti Mustaphi, deputy press secretary to Mrs. Obama. The majority of egg roll tickets were offered to the public online.

Alan Bernstein, a single gay father, is flying to Washington from West Hollywood, Calif., with his 5-year-old son Issac to participate. His 3-year-old twin daughters will stay with their grandparents. It will be Bernstein and his son's first time at the egg roll.

"I don't think to a 5-year-old it's that extraordinary, but to me it is," said the 43-year-old planning commissioner, calling the invitation an honor.

It's not the first time gay and lesbian-headed families will participate.

In 2006 during the Bush administration, more than 100 gay parents attended the egg roll in part to make the statement that they should be welcome. Some conservatives accused gays and lesbians of trying to "crash" the event and turn it into forum for ideological politicking.

This year already feels different, said Colleen Gillespie of Brooklyn, who helped spark the 2006 effort.

"We feel so welcomed and embraced, and that in a very real way, I think we can just go as a family and enjoy it," said the 42-year-old assistant professor at New York University's school of medicine, who is attending with her wife and their daughters, Ella and Zelda. "We don't have to fight for our right to exist and be treated fairly."

Leah McElrath Renna, managing partner at a D.C. communications firm, agreed. She attended the event in 2006 and 2007 with her partner, Cathy McElrath Renna, and their now 3-year-old daughter, Rosemary.

"Under Bush, it felt a bit like we were crashing our own party. But this year it feels like we're equally honored guests," Leah McElrath Renna, 44, said. "It's more celebratory."

Rosemary is particularly excited to see the Easter bunny again and already has planned her outfit: A yellow polka-dotted dress and a new straw hat with a pink band.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the joy on my daughter's face when she sees the Easter bunny," she said. "And seeing the White House in the background and knowing that America and the future that she lives in will be a more perfect place than it is now."

I'm pretty teed off that they offered the tickets online. Not every parent is computer savvy and i'm pretty sure the ticket scalpers snacted up most all the tickets from the ticket distributors. If these families that are not in the south or north east states, they can take the plane and come to washington for Easter and stand in line at the white office ticket office like the rest of us. I think this was the worst idea and I hope the next President in the White House change it back to tradition. I will attempt to go at that time.

Umm, that's why MOST (read carefully) NOT ALL tickets were offered online. Previously, folks in other states could not get tixs for the event.

News: Rhode Island had an anti-gay marriage rally (nom-RI) this morn at the capital with t.v. cameras and everything. How many people were there? THREE. The leader of nNOM, the governor, and his wacko wife. LOL! Oh, and a priest spoke. So, four. The cameraman was gay, fyi, so he doesn't count (ha! no political pun!)

It's offensive that tickets for a childrens event are "allocated" based on the sexual identity of a parent.
Perhaps next year tickets will be "allocated" by race, creed, income, and body mass index of a parent too.

And allocating the ticket to LGBT families was for diversity and integration. Segregating the tickets this way allow for a broader spectrum of families to be present. And that also means that the President welcomes and accepts LGBT families.

I see no negative spin on this article.

If you research the origins of Easter, you will find it appropriate that homosexuals and lesbians
be an intricate part of this celebration.

Overturning the defense of marriage act would be an even better outreach to the gay community

A paper in Indiana is conducting a gay marriage poll; It's in the lower lefthand corner of the page. You know what to do: http://www.perutribune.com/

Right now, yes on gay marriage is winning BIG. Let's make sure it stays that way.

It never fails to amaze me people complain about Obama not recongizing them or their issues and he specifically invites Gays and lesbians and now he is singling them out from other groups. How the heck is he suppse to have them there if he doesnt single them out. Is he suppose to telepathically bring them there. Dont you have to be invited to go. Some people need to make up their minds what they want.

Glad to see their allocating tickets to homosexual couples. I guess my issue is that they have to allocate at all. How many tickets were allocated for african americans, native americans, hispanics, children with special needs, rich white kids, etc... c'mon, let's see the numbers. Do they proportion attendence by state and population? CA and NY get more and ND, WY get less

Now I'm actually interested in knowing what it takes to get to one of these events. Anyone have links to this info?

Knowing Obama I suspect they were tickets allocated to AA, whites, Native Americans, single parent since not all families are couples be it Gay families or straight families and Latinos etc. He is about fairness to all group and the way to be fair is to make sure groups are represented.

african americans, native americans, hispanics, children with special needs, rich white kids all have one thing in common- they could all be gay.

Now we know for sure that the adolescent-minded wingnuts are out of the White House, and that civilized, worldly, educated adults have taken their place. This feels a little more like the *real* America.

it's also about time the presldent support g@y marriage too.
05:35 PM on 04/08/2009
he supports same sex civil unions - he prefers to leave whether or not it is marriage up to the church. That's what marriage is actually. The only difference is whether or not it takes place in a church. If you get married at city hall - it's a civil union
05:51 PM on 04/08/2009
I wish that were the only difference.

In fact, there are over 1000 federal CIVIL rights that come with civil "marriageA" that do not come with civil unions.

This issue is clearly about rights, civil and LEGAL rights, recognized in all states. Why not make ALL unions CIVIL unions, with all civil and legal rights currently being granted via civil "marriage" ? This would give ALL rights to ALL couples, and leave the word marriage to religious institutions.

It is an orientation---not a preference.

A sexual preference is: I like it: "in the morning", "in the evening", "twice-a-week", "every day", "in the kitchen", "on the floor", "in the car"...etc. A preference is "I prefer it this way, but will take it any way I can get it".

An orientation is, "This is the way I was made (straight, gay, bi) and it cannot be changed".
